Having grown up with the first wave of punk rock and then attending the great shows in Southern California featuring bands such as Black Flag, The Circle Jerks, X, The Germs, Social Distortion, TSOL, Youth Brigade, The Dickies, Fear, The Dead Kennedys, The Angry Somoans, The Adolescents, Agent Orange, JFA and The Vandals to name a few, four friends caught the bug to start a band themselves.
In 1983 Dean Briggs, Glenn McKenzie, Mike Burton and Bob Becker, all high school friends, started a band heavily influenced by the surf / skate culture and the sounds of bands like Agent Orange, The Gears, Simpletones, The Crowd and JFA.
After replacing Becker with KC Maddox on vocals in 1984 and settling in with Rich Paul on guitar in 1987, the lineup was set for the next 21 years. Known for their humorous lyrics and fun raucous shows that included a lot of crowd involvement, beer and barely clad punk rock girls, the Whitekaps played with most of the bands they grew up loving as well as the 90’s wave of punk bands such as Greenday, Offspring, Blink 182, Pennywise, Sublime, No Doubt, Face To Face, Ill Repute, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Lagwagon, Jugheads Revenge, Strung Out and Guttermouth.
After numerous singles, three full length albums, hundreds of shows and three US tours, Whitekaps are still going strong. With the addition of Jim Kupsh of Drain Bramaged on drums, Josh Neel of Amerikan Made on guitar and Daniel Tessier of Slab on guitar a new record, Anarchy Beach, is set for release in the fall of 2013.
