10 Punk Songs That Will Get You Stoked (curated by Dying Scene editor Lauren Mills)

Ever wonder what the folks who run Dying Scene have been listening to lately? We’re going to pretend you said “yes” to that question and feature a curated playlist from a different DS editor each week with the intent of exposing you to some new kickass punk bands. This week’s playlist is brought to you by Dying Scene editor Lauren Mills (that’s me!).

For this week’s theme I decided to pick songs that make me happy. Upbeat songs aren’t the only ones that put me in a good mood. Sometimes somber songs can be cathartic and make you feel less alone in life. Discover some great new tunes, and find out what makes me tick by streaming my personal picks below.

1.  American Steel – “Emergency House Party”

I figured this would be a good one to kick off the playlist with. If I were rich and popular like the young adults in movies who throw parties, this would probably be blasting on my stereo until the neighbors called the cops. For now, I’ll stick with hanging out with my dog and rolling around the living room with my headphones on.

2. Uncommonmenfrommars – “It’s a Small Price to Pay”

I’m a fan of any music project that singer Motor Ed has been in. Whether it be Uncommon Men From Mars, Sons Of Buddha or more recently, Not Scientists. He’s stolen my punk rock heart with his catchy tunes. With all that being said, I love this song in particular because it reminds me of my friends who slug it out in touring bands. They have sacrificed a sense of financial security, a normal social life, comfort etc so they can travel across the country and play bars and sleep on the floor night after night. I’m sure one of my musician friends could word this better, but you catch my drift. Their hard work and dedication inspire me.

3. 30FootFall – “Hooray”

These Texas punk rockers have been quiet since 2010’s “Jesus, Elvis, and Richard Petty” EP. I love their humor and wit. This song perfectly articulates why I love the punk scene. Despite its flaws, its home for me. I wouldn’t trade the loud music, late nights, sweaty hugs, smiles and handshakes for anything.

4.  Bigwig – “A War Inside”

I freaking love Bigwig. Their songs always get me pumped and ready to face the day.  Sometimes with all the boring punk songs about being drunk, break-ups and whatever the hell else, punk rock could use a swift kick in the ass. Bands like Bigwig is that. Now if they would only release a new album before Halley’s Comet makes an appearance, we’d be better off.

5. Suicide Machines – “Islands”

I miss this band. There is something about their tunes that instantly bring a smile to face. It may be because they remind me of my cousin who was responsible for me helping discover the wonder of punk rock in the first place. I should have chosen “New Girl” so I could day dream of smashing through the glass in the warehouse on THPS, but this will do.

6.  Samiam – “Clean Up The Mess”

I know it’s a bit strange that I picked a newer song from such a seasoned act that has an extensive catalog, but I love this tune from Samiam and their work in general. The first line of the song is cautiously optimistic but I can relate to it. Is it just me or are the back “oooh’s” in this song awesome? Just me? Okay, I’ll take it.

7. Zatopeks – “One Evening”

This is a band I’m betting most of you guys don’t know, but you should. “It’s About Bloody Time” is one of my favorite records in the world and it’s about bloody time you checked it out. Yeah, that was the best joke I could come up with. It’s shameful.

8. None More Black – “Under My Feet”

Dang, I love me some None More Black. These descriptions are starting to sound repetitive but it’s true. It’s almost embarrassing. Sometimes a single listen of this song will pull me out of my obnoxiously common mopey-ness.

9. The Gamits – “Rock Machine”

I guess you could say I like The Gamits a little bit. Ya know, enough to get their band name permanently etched into my skin. I win. You lose. Those dudes rule. Now if only that “rock n roll machine” would put out a new album and tour here so I can see their lovely faces. What do I have to do? (sobs)

10. Up For Nothing – “All We Need”

These fellas are some of my dearest friends and they make killer music together. They’re probably playing a basement near you right now.
