10 Punk Songs That Will Make Your Week (Curated by DS editor Jerry Baughn)

Ever wonder what the folks who run Dying Scene have been listening to lately?  We’re going to pretend you said “yes” to that question and feature a curated playlist from a different DS editor each week with the intent of exposing you to some new kickass punk bands.  This week we’re featuring Dying Scene editor Jerry Baughn.

Check out 10 songs from some bands I’ve been enjoying lately below.

1. Enabler – “F.A.T.H.”
Let’s start this thing out on a heavy note.  Hardcore, riffy, almost crusty punk rock from Milwaukee; Enabler will melt your face off.

2. Heartsounds – “Every Second Counts”
More riffs but in a more melodic format.  Heartsounds takes the drum speed of 90s skate punk, the guitar riffs of the bands’ metal roots, and the melodies of pop punk and combine this all into an incredible sound.  Check these guys and gal out.

3. Crusades – “The Shadow of Ideas”
Crusades is my latest obsession/addiction.  I’ll admit, when I saw “Satanic Punk Rock” written on an article about this band a few years back, I expected something cheesy, campy, and maybe interesting, but what I found completely blew me away.  The dark and melodic sound these guys have been playing for the past couple years was perfected on their last album.  Much like a Bad Religion album, the hooks will bring you in, and then you will find yourself on Google looking up some of the lyrics that might not make sense at first.

4. Galactic Cannibal – “Up Against The Wall”
Just my luck.  I get really into a band and then they immediately call it quits.  Thanks guys.  But seriously, this band is awesome.

5. The Wild – “Dreams Are Maps”
The Wild are a great folk punk band that takes the best parts of the genre and throws in some indie influence.  Their last album was recorded by Laura Jane Grace and features guest vocals from Andrew Jackson Jihad’s Sean Bonnette.  If that wasn’t enough to cement the album as a must have for folk punk fans, there’s also the fact that the album itself is really fucking good.

6. Lemuria – “Chihuly”
This isn’t what I typically listen to, but for some reason, I have taken a real liking to Lemuria’s latest album.  This is one of my favorites from that album.

7. Kill Lincoln – “Wake, Wait, Repeat”
It seems to have become increasingly harder for me to discover new ska or ska punk bands I like, but Kill Lincoln is the exception to that rule.  I have yet to catch these guys live, but I have a feeling when I eventually move up to DC, I will see these guys every chance I get.

8. Blackbird Raum – “Last Legs”
I don’t have much to say about Blackbird Raum other than they perfectly embody the anarcho-folk punk thing that seems to be happening in scenes around the country and world.  Do yourself a favor and give these guys a listen.

9. Tragedy – “Beginning Of The End”
When I first heard Tragedy, it was at a show my old high school buddy brought me to as a birthday gift.  Despite not knowing the band, that was one of the best shows I’ve ever been too and since then I have been eating up as much crust punk as I can get my hands on.

10. PUNCH – “Promises Kept”
PUNCH have been playing awesome powerviolence infused hardcore for almost a decade, but I didn’t find out about them until their newest album released last year.  Lead vocalist Meghan O’neil parted ways with the band shortly after the release of that album, but I’m hoping I can still catch them as well as Meghan’s new band Super Unison at some point.
