DS Exclusive: The Cheap Cassettes Premieres Cover of The Vibrators “Whips & Furs” From Upcoming Album

New Year, new music! Seattle, Washington garage rockers The Cheap Cassettes have a new LP coming out via Boston independent label Rum Bar Records. The twelve track LP, All Anxious, All The Time is set to release on February 17th but the trio just couldn’t wait that long for our readers to get a listen to the song they’re including as a bonus track. What’s to be excited about you ask? Well, the boys put together an incredible cover of “Whips & Furs” from UK punk legends, The Vibrators!  Give it a spin and check out what frontman Chaz Matthews had to say about the decision to cover this iconic song below!

FFO: The Kinks, Buzzcocks, Ramones

When asked about the cover, vocalist Chaz Matthews said “I can’t remember what led us to wanting to cover a Vibrators song. It’s basically the same riff as the Only Ones’ “Another Girl, Another Planet”, and I may have wanted to cover that initially. Kevin would have vetoed that as it’s been covered a gazillion times. We ended up with one of my favorite Vibrators songs, “Whips and Furs”. What an amazing line- “she drives a black Cadillac, whips and furs in the back”. It’s total nonsense but so evocative. And what a great riff! The Only Ones thought so too. We decided to slow it down a bit, and make it more dramatic, and make it stomp harder, with crazy lead guitar wailing. Like a Budweiser commercial version of ’77 punk rock. That was a terrible idea, but somehow it worked. It’s a fun little track, we hope it makes your big toe stick right up in your boot!”
