Nadezhda Tolokonnikova (Pussy Riot) undergoing tests at prison hospital

In somewhat good news, Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, is no longer missing after we reported about her unknown whereabouts earlier this month. Unfortunately, it appears that she is currently at Tuberculosis Hospital No 1 in Krasnoyarsk, in western Siberia, undergoing tests for “various conditions” – which some are reporting as being related to her recent hunger strike. Tolokonnikova’s husband, Peter Verzilov, told the BBC he had spoken to his wife for the first time since she initially went missing on Oct. 21:

Mr Verzilov said his wife had told him that conditions at the hospital were much better than at the penal colony in Mordovia, where she had been held previously, and that she had not been beaten during the 26 days she was missing.

Russian prison authorities issued a statement confirming that “convict Tolokonnikova has arrived to the institution of the Russian prison service in the Krasnoyarsk region”.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted as more details on Tolokonnikova’s current situation come to light.

By now you probably know that three Pussy Riot members were arrested in connection to their “punk prayer” protest against Vladimir Putin, which occurred in February 2012 at Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow.  One member has since been released but two – Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina – still remain in custody and are supposed to be released in March of 2014, having served a two-year sentence on charges of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.”
