Today the Recording Industry Association of America have announced that online streams of songs will now count towards earning a gold or platinum record. Under their new system, 100 streams of a track will now be the equivalent to one digital download.
The last time the RIAA altered the method for earning the prestigious awards, was back in 2006 when they started counting the sales of master ring tones. Two years before that was when they first began counting the sale of digital downloads.
Some of the on demand streaming services the RIAA will recognize are Spotify, Slacker, and Rhapsody. Video sites such as YouTube, MTV, and VEVO will also be counted.
