Video Tribute: Dicky Barrett turns 50!

There’s a moment in the outstanding documentary The Other “F” Word in which Bad Religion’s Brett Gurewitz says something to the effect of “punk rock wasn’t meant to grow up and get old, but it did, so deal with it.”  Case in point: Dicky Barrett, inimitable frontman from legendary, genre-defining skacore act The Mighty Mighty Bosstones turned 50 last weekend!

In honor of the event, Dicky’s band (alongside the Gaslight Anthem and longtime Boston rock veterans Barrence Whitfield and the Savages) played a massive 50th birthday party show at Boston’s City Hall Plaza on Saturday. Prior to the Bosstones’ set, a well-made tribute video was aired to the capacity crowd. It features well-wishes from local scene veterans, a few surprise national icons from across the entertainment world and, most importantly, Dicky’s friends and family. Watch the video below.

On a personal note, Dicky and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones are almost single-handedly the reason that yours truly stumbled into this thing called punk. I owe him well more than the solitary high-five that I’ve given him over the last couple decades. Happy 50th, Dicky!
