I'll take that as a compliment! Music is subjective though, so what resonates with me might not resonate with you-- so hey, no worries here.
It wasn't my intention to snub anyone's playing, I just don't know shit about drumming. It's an instrument that's much harder for me to appreciate because of my relative lack of knowledge. But hey, glad you dug the album!
Wow, I really like this actually. Kudos.
I really dig this, actually. I was inspired by the (wonderful) review to take a look and now I'm starting to think this may be one of those great releases that will unfortunately be overlooked by many.
Album of the Year.
To be fair, Sacred Cow Saturday is now a bi-weekly affair, so we're actually on schedule. There, I have now gotten my rocks off by challenging an innocent joke. I hope I'm happy.
I find it incredibly hard to believe that people like this band.
Fair enough, janichols1. We can argue over the minutae of an album all day, but we can't argue against being in the right place at the right time. Dookie hit a lot of people at the time they needed it, and although I don't think it's that great of an album, I can respect the appealing nostalgia people connect with it. But I don't think I can agree with you on applauding Green Day for their continued success. I may be too punk for my own good, but I see their success as the result of a continued dilution of their punk influences, making them a more accessible product for consumption. Say what you will about NOFX and Rancid, and seriously, you can say a lot of shit about them these days-- but they continue to play punk rock and can expand and progress without losing their independent-minded spirit. Either way, thanks for the comment. We love to see comments like this. Sacred Cow Saturday is all about discussion in the first place, so we love it when a reader chimes in with an opinion. Thanks, Carson
I'm surprised we didn't get more true believers in here defending the Replacements like rabid dogs. I mean, obviously, I'm not a big fan of "Tim" but I'm kind of curious to hear everyone else's opinion.
And once again, Tim Armstong makes a solid attempt at ruining one of my favorite songs.
I'm going to be the bitter internet punk now and complain about half of these releases not being that good: Failed States was a dry, bland record with only a few moments of transcendence. Handwritten is irritatingly overwrought, it's like the soundtrack to a muscle car catalog. It's basically the sound of Gaslight Anthem becoming a parody of themselves. All or Nothing is okay, but nowhere near a great release. It's true, Zoli reinvigorated Pennywise's sound, but that doesn't change the fact that the lyrics are incredibly dumb. "You've got to live every moment till the day you die" is not a good lyric, no matter how you spin it. The General Strike was a bad record, no doubt about it. Liking Anti-Flag is fine, really it is, but blindly heaping praise on a mediocre record isn't. Just because the press release calls it a return to form, doesn't mean it is. Green Day is irrelevant to our scene, and indifferent to our tastes. They're making music for the lowest common denominator, and worst of all they're doing it really poorly. I did however love The Menzingers, Hot Water Music, Masked Intruder, Jeff Rosenstock, Mixtapes, Title Fight, Yankee Brutal, Morning Glory, OFF!, and Classics of Love.
I'm going to nominate this for Best Unintentionally Hilarious Cover Song of 2012.
Fuck. What the hell does Against Me! do to their drummers? It's like they can get an album out of them and then they're just like "Oh fuck, man, I'm out." I guess Warren Oakes was the only capable of withstanding the constant waterboarding or whatever the fuck they do.
*To Damn my haste!
I obviously disagree. But that's okay. Too each his own.
Thanks for the heads up, and sorry it took so long for us to fix it. -Carson
Sounds like a legitimate theory from a completely sound mind.
I think this is going to be a lot cooler than anything Frank Turner has done solo. Don't get me wrong, love his stuff, but this sounds like Turner is having fun with the freedom that comes with the genre change. Sounds interesting, I'm excited for it.
Thanks for the shout out! This is a great record and anyone who's a fan of modern punk will dig it.
This is a bummer. For my money, Bomb the Music Industry! is the best band working in the modern punk scene.
