OK, so it took some digging to figure this all out but apparently Blag Dahlia, frontman of The Dwarves, had a “glam rock” side project 25 years ago called Penetration Moon that he also sang vocals for. The band only officially released one single back in 1991 but apparently had recorded an entire album’s worth of Blag originals and covers (GG Allin, Bo Carter and a bunch more I couldn’t place). For some unspecified reason these recordings were never officially released… until now.

This week on Dying Scene Radio, Bob Noxious interviews Joe Queer, guitarist and lead singer of the legendary American punk rock band The Queers on their co-headlining ticket with The Dwarves at BackBooth in Orlando, FL. And Bobby Pickles slurs through his end of this week’s podcast drunk on whiskey.
Dwarves’ frontman Blag Dahlia denies Noxious’ allegations of conspiracy to expel Bobby Pickles from The Bowery Electric on this two-part series concerning “some obscure dude from New York”.
SYNOPSIS OF BANTER
Bobby asks Bob about how he got his start in radio. Bob explains his humble beginnings on a local Pirate Radio Station and growing up the son of a 70’s A.M. Radio “Hot Jock” DJ.
Bobby declares, “pop-anything sucks”, including but not limited to pop-country and pop-hip-hop and pop-punk; he then continues on with a news story about Blink 182. Bob continues to be amazed that the aforementioned band remains seemingly relevant to the patrons of dyingscene.com and quickly dismisses them.
Bob asks Joe Queer why punk rock legends are so much more accessible than the untouchable rock heroes of yesteryear. Joe tells Bob about meeting Joey Ramone and eventually working with him on his solo record. Legendary! (There’s that word again). Later, Blag baba-booeys the interview, asking Joe about “the blow and all that stuff”.
Bob discusses his deep seething hatred of the “emo/kid/bubblegum/pop” bands who are continually signed to Epitaph, explaining further that the only relevant band still left on the label is Bad Religion (not true, see: Rancid, Pennywise, Millencolin, Propagandhi, The Descendents…and the list goes on and on).
Talk turns to all of the different silly names that record labels are naming themselves.
Bobby mentions looking forward to seeing Less Than Jake in New Haven, then gloats that there are no Florida dates for Bob to catch. Bob informs Bobby that LTJ’s frontman, Chris DeMakes, lives in the same Florida city as he, continuing that they play roughly eight local shows per year.
Bobby, once again, invites Bob to New York for a yearly shindig, then accuses him of being “too pushy” when Bob suggests an interview request with NJ hardcore band, Bigwig. Passive-aggressive puns are passed around playfully as Bob chastises Bobby for a slow news week at DyingScene.com when his supposed “jouralist” co-host covers a story about “some dude’s record collection” – Bobby waxing on about Minor Threat’s Filler EP.

I’m not the greatest interviewer in the world; not by a long shot. My Dying Scene Radio co-host, Bob Noxious, is far superior. Constantly talking over people and trampling guests with my idiotic blather, I am still learning how to deliver the question and then shut the heck up. I’m definitely aware of my own idiocy. Still, there’s some good that comes with being a good talker. For instance, I managed to talk my way into a press pass and an interview with Dwarves’ frontman Blag Dahlia, last Friday, (the 13th, coincidentally), prior to the first stop on the band’s east coast tour at The Bowery Electric in New York City.
I asked Blag about his band’s excessive use of nicknames, the extent of their DIY operation (“Why not hire a lowly assistant to respond back and forth to assholes like me?), and whatever happened to his now defunct punk rock podcast, Radio Like You Want. Without breaking character, Blag quips about his band being somehow linked to Islamic Fundamentalism, while boasting about being tall and having a large penis. So, whatever your opinion of my bumbling style – I do somehow manage to elicit interesting banter. Well, you tell me.

This week on Dying Scene Radio, Bobby Pickles interviews Dwarves’ frontman Blag Dahlia prior to the band’s seminal east coast show at The Bowery Electric in New York City. With “Press Pass” in hand, Pickles covers the concert in true punk rock fashion – culminating in a swarm of security guards ejecting him from the venue. Bobby is convinced that Blag gave the orders to have him forcibly removed from the concert in order to validate the band’s reputation. The FULL Video interview can be found HERE on the DSR YouTube channel: Bobby asks about the band’s nom de plumes, Blag’s books, zines and brilliant writing ability, and the day-to-day operations of a DIY punk icon, while Blag mentions his band being somehow linked to Islamic Fundamentalism, which is the perfect time to boast about being very tall and having a large penis.
BAND SPOTLIGHT: Mid Rats
The Bobs reach out to the Lancaster, Pennsylvania punk act, Mid Rats, for a St. Paddy’s Day interview special…and Bobby has been drinking. The band, which just recently released their 4 song EP, Vandalize You, are this week’s featured Dying Scene artist. Bobby takes a trip down memory lane when he reveals that he used to date a girl whose uncle owned a very prominent vintage clothing business in downtown Lancaster: Zap & Co. As the conversation progresses, drunk-Bobby calls the band out for not playing Philadelphia sooner, but then saves face and displaying his literary prowess by citing Mark Twain as a reference when the band is asked about the origin of their name.
THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES
Some of the topics reported herein, include, but are not limited to the following: Green Day to be inducted into Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame by Fall Out Boy; Punk producer Thom Wilson (The Offspring, Bad Religion, T.S.O.L., Dead Kennedys, Social Distortion, The Vandals, etc.) dies: Bob reveals his tasteless side when he ponders starting a “Punk Rock Death Pool”, to which Bobby selects “any of the surviving Ramones members” or the high-odds pick of Green Jellÿ, who possess 600+ bandmates; Bob ponders the list, but remains silent out of respect for the recently departed. Punk Aid announces details/call for submissions for fourth fundraiser album, “Autism Speaking”; New music videos: The Bunny Gang (ft. Nathen Maxwell of Flogging Molly) release music video for “Sirens Through The City”, The Offspring release music video for “Coming For You”, Kill Lincoln release music video for “Good Riddance to Good Advice”; Notable documentaries: Video: Part One of “The Making of Fat Mike’s Musical”, The Damned documentary trailer released, Underoath reveal new trailer for upcoming documentary “Tired Violence”. A new EP from The Dwarves on Fat Wreck Chords, this is very exciting!
Apparently ALL of the Dwarves both past and present appear on this EP including HeWhoCannotBeNamed and Salt Peter. It also features guest appearances from Dexter Holland (the Offspring) and Rex Everything (a.k.a. Nick Oliveri of Queens of the Stone Age/Mondo Generator/Kyuss).
Gentleman Blag is a 4 song adventure available on 7 Inch Vinyl for Five Bucks!
1. Side A Gentleman Blag/Trisexual*
2. Side B Kings of the World/Stuck in the Void*
*unreleased- does not appear on Dwarves Invented Rock & Roll LP
According to Blag himself the title track of “Gentleman Blag” it’s about “how big my c**k is”. If you’re familiar with The Dwarves at all you wouldn’t be shocked to hear him say that and to write a song about it too. Dwarves lyrics are known for satirical and low-brow humor and that’s the way we likes em’ but lets give Blag Jesus credit where it is due, he’s one clever mother-f**ker. And beneath the pounding and shredding there is undeniable talent.
Fat Wreck has been pumping out some great releases this past year and this latest proves that 2015 is off to a great start! Fat seems to be a perfect fit for Dwarves music and Blag thinks so too, “The song “Kings of the World” reminded me of that Fat Wreck Chords sound; straightforward punk, big harmonies and lyrics about social issues.”
Although the track is only thirty-three seconds long “Trisexual” is a killer one to leave on repeat for a while. “That’s the way it’s done, son” is how this song begins and I can’t disagree with that at all. The delivery of the lyrics are fast and funny at times but the message clearly promotes sexual freedoms.
“Stuck In The Void” takes this EP on a twist in the musical climate previously established on the first 3 tracks. In this song the notes of the guitar and bass are dark and crunchy, the drums in the breakdown resemble that of which soldiers would march to, as whispers echo before the gritty screams return. Blag screams the words as if he is actually stuck and he needs rescuing from the void that he has found himself in but help never comes; or does it?
This 4 song collection is one that every punk-rocker in America and beyond should embrace as it reminds us that punk is not dead. It’s in fact alive and well and sometimes it takes a group of punk mavericks like The Dwarves to remind us of that.
I give this EP 4 out of 5 stars

Well lookie here, folks. Riot Fest’s tenth anniversary celebration seems to be a gift that keeps on giving…to native Chicagoans, anyway.
The lineup has just been announced for a new Riot Fest show, set to take place in November at the Concord Music Hall. Headlining the gig will be the one-and-only Screeching Weasel, with support from the equally legendary Dwarves and The Queers, as well as someday-legendary Flatfoot 56. This is apparently Ben Weasel and Company’s last show of the year, so jump on it. Details here.
