The 13-track album was recorded primarily in the UK with producer Ross Orton. The ambition of Dark Black Makeup is evidenced by the heightened songwriting and broadened sonic palette, but the energy behind the music remains the same—visceral, urgent, and raw. It is the sound of three people doing what they love…loudly.

Dark Black Makeup can be pre-ordered here. Radkey last released their Cat & Mouse EP last year.

Album Review: The Splits – “II”

The Splits are a Finnish punk rock band. They keep things simple. They like The Spits. They also reportedly enjoy The Slits. As implied by the title of their new album, II is their second full length album. It’s also their second untitled album. Like I said, they keep things simple.

Much like their (alleged) namesakes, The Splits have a lo-fi, garagey quality to their music. Like all great garage rock, there’s a contrast between the soothing melodies and rough and raw vocals, working together instead of against each other. Sometimes II gets a little surfy, and sometimes it has a bit of new wave flavor, but it never strays so far that it reaches the point of no return. II is the kind of album that sounds equally good in a basement as it would while cruising to the beach.

Further evidence that The Splits keep things simple: II is short, breezing through 9 tracks in just about 25 minutes. That’s not to say that this is a band or album for simpletons, or that it’s any worse for it, but it does help to illustrate that The Splits are not a flashy band, nor are they much for gimmicks. They’re not looking to convince anyone to listen to them based on anything except for their music. Which is fine, because the music is pretty good.

3.5 / 5 – Listen to II below.

Full EP Stream: Brat Kings (Canadian garage punk) – “Good Drugs”

Here’s some new music for your Hump Day evening (this is going to be a recurring theme for the next couple hours…stay tuned). The band is called Brat Kings, and they somehow state that they hail from Monteal and Toronto. I’m not a Canadian geographer by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel like that probably makes for a long commute to and from band practice.

Anyway, Brat Kings are billed as a three-piece “garage surf punk rock” outfit. They’re streaming their new EP, “Good Drugs” for your listening enjoyment, and you can check it out below. You can also purchase your very own digital copy here.

“Good Drugs” was released yesterday (April 21st) via Hosehead Records.

Death stream upcoming album

Detroit, MI punk act Death (not to be confused with the pioneering death metal act of the same name) have released a stream of their new studio album, N.E.W., ahead of its April 21 release date. on April 21, 2015 via Tryangle / Drag City Records. The album is noted for being the the band’s first recorded output of new material in nearly 40 years, as the band’s other albums (…For the Whole World to SeeSpiritual | Mental | Physical, and III) were all archival collections of unreleased recordings.

You can stream the album right here.

Death originally broke up in 1977, but reformed in 2009 when Drag City uncovered and released their first album …For the Whole World to See. Since then, interest in the band has grown exponentially, particularly after the release of the 2012 documentary A Band Called Death.
