Random Cover Song: Thom Weeks (Gnarwolves) – “Holiday” (The Get Up Kids)

Cover songs are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. We here at Dying Scene love hearing punk bands do their own take on other band’s songs. Sometimes they pull off amazing interpretations of old classics, sometimes they’re not much more than humble tributes to a fellow artist, and other times they’re just downright laughable renditions of otherwise great songs. Good or bad. Intriguing or mundane. We’ll let you be the judge.

Today’s cover comes from Thom Weeks, of Gnarwolves, covering The Get Up Kids‘ “Holiday”. The original is taken from The Get Up Kids’ 1999 album Something to Write Home About, while Weeks’ solo acoustic cover comes from the PV Undercover Vol. 2 compilation.

You can listen to both versions of “Holiday” below.

Random Cover Song: The Get Up Kids – “Suffragette City”

Cover songs are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. We here at Dying Scene love hearing punk bands do their own take on other band’s songs. Sometimes they pull off amazing interpretations of old classics, sometimes they’re not much more than humble tributes to a fellow artist, and other times they’re just downright laughable renditions of otherwise great songs. Good or bad. Intriguing or mundane. We’ll let you be the judge.

Today’s cover comes from 90’s indie/emo mainstays  The Get Up Kids performing “Suffragette City”, originally written and performed by famed glam rocker David Bowie. Bowie released the song on his 1972 album, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, although it was later released as its own single in 1976 to promote the Changesonebowie compilation. The Get Up Kids released their version on the 2001 b-sides and rarities collection Eudora.

You can check out both versions of the song below.
