Brian Fallon posts an update on his solo album

Posted by ChrisDude on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 7:49 AM (PST)

Brian Fallon, the lead singer and guitarist of The Gaslight Anthem, has posted an update in regards to his anticipated solo album, which is supposed to be out this year and the musical direction is said to be a departure from his work with The Gaslight Anthem and The Horrible Crowes. He writes:

“What I’m working on I’d classify as Americana. It’s not from New Jersey, it’s not The Gaslight Anthem, in fact, it’s not even mine, but it’s ours… I’m looking to the people who used folk and country music as a tradition and took what was past and moved forward. Wilco, Ryan Adams, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, the Highwaymen, Bob Dylan, etc… I’m not writing about straw hats and gin joints. I’m not writing about nostalgia or a time I wasn’t born it. I’m writing about the last two years of my life since we wrote Handwritten. This project is going to be based on things I learned early on musically, which were my mother’s folk songs. We also listened to a lot of early country. I’d like to write my years down.”

The Gaslight Anthem released their last album, Handwritten, on Mercury Records in July. The band recently announced that they have been working on another album, but did not reveal a release date.

Brian Fallon, of the The Gaslight Anthem and the The Horrible Crowes, treated fellow New Jersey natives to an exclusive Q&A and acoustic performance last month as part of Red Bull Music Academy.  Brian regaled the crowd with anecdotes about everything from working construction and the New York Yankees to writing music, the upcoming Gaslight album and what he thinks of different bands (Jawbreaker: not that great, Pearl Jam: awesome).

The whole thing is actually immensely entertaining.  Check it all out here.

Red Bull Music Academy is a 5-week event coming this fall to NYC, where 60 music makers from around the globe will gather to make music and swap wisdom.

The Gaslight Anthem will release their upcoming album “Handwritten” this June via Mercury Records.

Last weekend, we informed you that Brian Fallon’s The Horrible Crowes project would be releasing a limited edition 7-inch single for “Ladykiller,” and that the B-side for said release would be their cover of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream.”

According to the band’s label, SideOneDummy, that is apparently not the case. Instead, the B-side will be the band’s cover of the timeless INXS classic “Never Tear Us Apart.” Click here for the label’s official statement.

The “Ladykiller” 7-inch will be available February 21st. The track appears on the band’s release “Elsie,” which dropped last September. Fallon’s other project, The Gaslight Anthem, are busy recording their Mercury Records debut.

I think it’s fair to say that year was overwhelmingly punk’s year to say, “yeah, we can do rock, folk, and blues better than you.” Or at least that’s what I believe, and you can see why in the ten entrees here!

Music Video: The Horrible Crowes debut video for “Ladykiller”

Posted by jaystone on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 12:32 PM (PST)

The Horrible Crowes, whom everyone knows by know are comprised of The Gaslight Anthem frontman Brian Fallon and guitar tech/”best friend” Ian Perkins, have debuted the official music video for “Ladykiller.”

The track appears on the band’s debut SideOneDummy release “Elsie,” and is the second music video from the album (following “Behold The Hurricane,” which was released in September). Click here to watch the video (which we’re pretty sure was shot at The Troubadour in LA back in September).

“Elsie” was released September 6th. The Gaslight Anthem are set to record their debut Mercury Records release in the very near future.

The “punk-frontman-turned-acoustic-troubadour” movement has continued to gain speed over the last several years, as songwriters continue to explore the logical connection between traditional folk music and punk music. Brian Fallon (The Gaslight Anthem, The Horrible Crowes) and Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids, The New Amsterdams) have taken a slightly different track, playing stripped down versions of songs you know and love already (while Pryor has also started to make a name for himself as a solo musician).

They recently teamed up for an intimate, student-only show at the afterHOURS club at Northeastern University in Boston. Check out my full review and nowhere-near professional-quality pictures here.

Yours truly was lucky enough to attend a coffeehouse-style acoustic gig featuring Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids) and Brian Fallon (The Gaslight Anthem/The Horrible Crowes) in Boston last night.

A full show review and photo album will follow (as well as a few news-related tidbits), but if you click here, you can watch a couple of totally shaky, lo-fi videos from the performance. First up is “The Diamond Church Street Choir,” followed by “American Slang.” Both tracks appear on TGA’s 2010 SideOneDummy release “American Slang.”

The Gaslight Anthem are currently recording their Mercury Records debut.
