Random Cover Song: The Draft – “Little Mascara” (The Replacements)

Cover songs are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. We here at Dying Scene love hearing punk bands do their own take on other band’s songs. Sometimes they pull off amazing interpretations of old classics, sometimes they’re not much more than humble tributes to a fellow artist, and other times they’re just downright laughable renditions of otherwise great songs. Good or bad. Intriguing or mundane. We’ll let you be the judge.

Tonight’s cover comes from the post-Hot Water Music project, The Draft, and their cover of The Replacements tune “Little Mascara”. The original version appeared on The Replacements 1984 album Tim, while The Draft recorded their cover for the 2006 compilation album We’ll Inherit the Earth: A Tribute to the Replacements.

You can listen to both versions of “Little Mascara” below.

DS Photo Gallery: The Draft, Tim Barry and friends – The Middle East, Cambridge, MA

If you read either of our recent interviews with Tim Barry or The Draft’s Jason Black, you are no doubt aware that both acts are part of some of the cooler touring lineups this summer (the former with Cory Branan and Des Ark, the latter with Luther and Cheap Girls). More astute readers will recall that there were two dates in which both tours overlapped in such a perfect manner that they actually combined lineups for a sort of six-act super show. Luckily for this writer, the first of those dates was last weekend at the legendary Middle East Nightclub in Cambridge, MA.

As you might imagine, the eclectic lineup served to present showgoers with a truly unique concert-going experience. To really do the show justice, a solid review would probably border on 3000 words, even for one who doesn’t ramble the way that I do. If you live anywhere within a hundred-mile radius of either of these tours independently, they really shouldn’t be missed. If you’re lucky enough to live in Detroit, site of the other overlap, there’s really no excuse…

Click here to check out our photo gallery of the full lineup (Luther, Des Ark, Cheap Girls, Cory Branan, Tim Barry and The Draft, in that order). And while we may not cover Des Ark or Cory Branan on a punk scene website, do yourself a favor and look them up.

DS Interview: Jason Black on The Draft reuniting, what’s up with Hot Water Music and more

If you read Dying Scene regularly, it’s safe to assume that you don’t live in a cave. As such, it’s probably redundant to tell you that The Draft are back. But hell with it…The Draft are back! Comprised of the three less-beardy quarters of the seminal band Hot Water Music, The Draft have plugged Addison Gilbert (The Ship Thieves) into the lineup and are hitting the road for their first tour dates in five years. We caught up with bassist Jason Black amidst a Northeast heat wave for a chat about what prompted the band’s return, what’s going on in the HWM camp, and how the industry has changed for ‘working musicians’ over the last twenty years. Click here to check it out.
