10 “Up And Comers” You Don’t Want To Miss at Punk Rock Bowling 2017 – Vegas

It’s that time of year again. Time for the premiere fest in the west. Time for eighty-proof venom and sweat-soaked denim. Power chords for the rowdy hordes. Memorial day is almost upon us, and so is Punk Rock Bowling.

This year, like any other, a weekend of debauchery, booze, and punk rock opens its sweet-smelling and slightly sticky arms to the loyalists of all that is loud and fast. It’s a weekend long party that doesn’t stop, taking over the whole of downtown Las Vegas. Huge headliners lead the party forward with support from lesser known bands, right on the cusp of explosion and renown. All of this on the main stage, the small stage; indoor club shows and outdoor festival alike.

We know all the big names, and we know how they earned their bigness. Cocksparrer transformed punk from art school subversion to working class expression. Bad Religion gave the world Suffer, and changed the game forever. And without Iggy Pop, who’s to say our beloved genre would even exist in the first place?

But this isn’t about them. This is for the little guys, the upstarts who rock under the radar, who keep the veins of punk flush with fresh blood. Click here for the acts you might not have heard of, but will definitely want to catch at PRB 2017.

DS Staff Picks: AnarchoPunk’s Top 10 Albums of 2016

Your favorite molotov cocktail waiter, AnarchoPunk here with my Album of the Year List for 2016! For those unfamiliar with my work, I write the monthly Hidden Gems of Bandcamp piece and manage the Exclusive Premieres and sometimes, you may even hear me on DS Radio doing band interviews. On last year’s AoTY list, I cheated a little bit and included EPs. I’ve held myself to a higher standard (yuck!) in 2016 and limited my selections to LPs only. With that being said, I did include a brief list of my favorite EPs because there were so many rad short albums too. Astute readers will notice a few big names like NOFX, Blink 182 and Descendents missing from my annual list. Good observational skills! With a ton of superb younger acts filling up the ranks, it wasn’t difficult finding bands to replace some of the bigger names who released slightly disappointing albums this year and it took me awhile to whittle it down to just ten records.

So, without further fanfare, check out my Top Ten Albums of 2016 below!

Album Review: wolves & wolves & wolves & wolves – “The Cross and the Switchblade”

wolves&wolves&wolves&wolves is one of the most well rounded punk acts to hit the scene in the past five years. Their rustic, honest approach to both their songwriting as well as music composition is probably their hallmark and most certainly sets them apart from the majority of their peers, often displaying a level of sophistication and skill, typically reserved for more veteran acts. That same trait is also a contributing factor to their expeditious raise through the ranks of relatively new bands, where they have (rightly) been near the top for the past couple years. Now, the Wolves from Winston-Salem are back with their second LP, The Cross and the Switchblade which is set to release on September 16th through Wiretap Records. The only thing I ever feared was that because the caliber of music was so high, that they may have reached a ceiling. That notion was put to rest after one listen, as this LP has only proven to solidify their pole position among up and coming acts. If anything, it has only further embedded them into that spot. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one impressed as there is talk from a few insiders already about considering this one for their Album of the Year lists. Check out my full review below!

One of the many joys of this gig is getting to meet awesome people from all over the world who have a passion for this Scene as much as me. Not that I’m bursting at the seams with punk pride or anything, it’s just that I grew up in a small town where people weren’t like me. So, I always embrace the chance to meet like minded individuals. One such individual sent me an unsolicited Facebook friend request a year or two ago (see, some people actually find me charming). I passively watched my daily feed fill up with his posts about incredible shows he was putting on at his venue or promoting some band that no one had ever heard of with the fervor of a six year old on Christmas morning. I didn’t even realize for months that this guy was in Logan, Utah until we started interacting a little more. “How is there such an active scene in B.F.E, Utah?” I thought to myself. What is this kid? The Johnny Appleseed of punk, spreading seeds of the scene throughout the Cache Valley, nurturing them with all his might in hopes that they will one day bear fruit? Well, the short answer, surprisingly is yes! This Johnny AppleScene (no?) has been proving for years, that the DIY ethos that makes our community so great can get shit done against heavy odds and under unlikely circumstances. Now, it’s time for our community to show that the same self sufficient, “circle the wagons” attitude can keep this small but thriving scene in Northern Utah alive. If you are a punk at heart, you will really want to give this one a read. Check out more on this story and find out how you can help below!
