Glenn Danzig talks about covers album and possibility of new music

Posted by ChrisDude on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 6:40 AM (PST)

Full Metal Jackie recently conducted an interview with Glenn Danzig (The Misfits, Samhain and Danzig), who talks about a “Legacy” TV special, the long-awaited covers album and the possibility of new music. Asked about his influences and the covers album, which was announced almost exactly a year ago, Glenn replied:

“Elvis, of course, I heard when I was a kid and Sabbath when I was a young teenager, but the ZZ Top song is a song I heard later on because it’s a song that no one would ever think I would cover, because it’s not one of their earlier songs. It’s a song I always liked and thought that they didn’t do a good job with. I mean, it’s terrible to say that but… it’s a really good song and so I wanted to cover it and give it the respect it deserved. Maybe they didn’t think about it the way I did, maybe when they were doing it they had a certain thing in mind. My idea of covers is that you should never cover a song and do it exactly like the artist because everyone’s always going to compare it to the way the original artists did it and they’re just going to go, “Oh, I like the original better.” I wanted to make it my own and take it in a different direction, maybe a different direction they didn’t really think of at the time or would never think of, because I have a much different background than they do. There’s a ton of other cool covers on there. I did a lot of covers people wouldn’t think I would do, like “Biker” soundtrack theme song that I made crazy. There’s a Lee Hazlewood/Nancy Sinatra cover on there and I had Cherie Currie come down and sing the Nancy Sinatra part. She’s really cool and has a great voice and it was just awesome and I wanted to keep that cool, older, ’70s vibe because the Misfits came on the tail end of the ’70s and I wanted to keep that vibe. The managers and lots of other people suggested the new alternative girls and I was, like, “That’s not what I want and here’s who I’m thinking of” and they were like “What?” and it’s fantastic; she did such a great job.”

Glenn was also asked if the Danzig band has been working on new material, which will be their first since 2010′s Deth Red Sabaoth, he replied, “Actually, Tommy and I just cut a new track the other day. It was a song I had written for somebody else, and I just decided I would do it on my own, and that came out really heavy. I think at the end of this run, me, Tommy and Johnny are going to go in and cut some other songs.”

Sacred Cow Saturday: The Misfits – “Walk Among Us”

Posted by dougahlgren on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 12:14 PM (PST)

Punk rock has been around long enough  to hold within its musical boundaries a slew of albums considered both classic and essential. We here at Dying Scene love and appreciate these classic albums, but every once and a while we have the urge to challenge what the community has deemed sacred. Every Saturday, two Dying Scene writers will square off head-to-head and either attack or defend one of these so-called classics. Up for slaughter today is The Misfits‘ “Walk Among Us.” Does the 1982 classic hold up today? You be the judge. Doug Ahlgren will be defending and Jason Stone will be attacking.

Let the battle begin!

Ex-Misfits singer Michale Graves seeks funding for new solo album

Posted by ChrisDude on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 7:09 PM (PST)

Michale Graves, former lead singer of the post-Glenn Danzig Misfits, just begun using Kickstarter to fundraise his new solo album, Vagabond, which drops on March 21, 2013, his 38th birthday. He comments:

“I have been a performer for 17 years and have had the chance to travel the world and experience so many incredible people along the way. I live for performing and have been on tour so much that I haven’t had the ability to record a new album in over four years. Working in conjunction with Kickstarter, I now have the ability to access those who mean the most — my fans — and create something unique for them.”

Graves will enter Soundmine Recording Studio in November to begin tracking Vagabond, which will be produced by Hydraulic Entertainment, will feature 11 new and never-before-released songs that display Michale’s unique folk/pop sensibility. The album will not be available at any other point of distribution, making this release an exclusive, limited-edition album.

Graves last released Halifax Live at the Musicroom in 2009, while The Misfits (now featuring guitarist and founding member Jerry Only on vocals) released their last album The Devil’s Rain exactly a year ago. You can check out our review of that album, which was published a month after its release.

Glenn Danzig to release covers album

Posted by ChrisDude on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 7:03 PM (PST)

Glenn Danzig, the singer of Danzig and formerly of the Misfits and Samhain, has been in the studio recording a covers album, which he plans to release this summer/fall. When his band Danzig does a “Legacy” tour, beginning in the next few weeks, a song from the record called “Devil’s Angels” will be premiered. In regards to his decision to make a covers album, Glenn tells Loudwire:

“I’ve wanted to record this song since 1979, and this is exactly the same arrangement I had for it back then, so it pretty much sounds like that late ’70s style of mine. I’m really happy with the way it turned out; it actually came out much better than I had hoped it would. We’re going to be playing it live on these upcoming shows.”

The untitled-album will also include cover versions of songs by Black Sabbath, Elvis Presley and many other artists. Glenn states, “It’s [got] lots of different stuff [on it]. Of course there’s an Elvis Presley song on there, there’s a Black Sabbath cover… Then I took some old biker-movie theme songs and made them all old punk-sounding or whatever… Just f—ing around, really — just having a good time taking songs and giving them a different life or a different dimension. I just do what I feel like doing, as long as I don’t just cover it, because that’s boring to me. I wanna take it and change it and give it some other kind of thing. Otherwise just leave it alone.”

The Danzig band last released Deth Red Sabaoth in 2010.
