Album Review: Victims Of Circumstance – “No More Heroes”

Floridian ska-punk veterans Victims Of Circumstance are back with a new release – their fourth full-length album entitled No More Heroes – and my god, is it a beast.

Picking things up right where their last record Acupunkture left off, No More Heroes delivers even more of the catchy, fast-paced, horn-driven punk many have grown to expect from Victims Of Circumstance. And as always, there are a few bouncy ska songs thrown in for good measure.

A few of the album’s numerous stand-out tracks include “Katie”, “Arbitor of Bad Taste”, “First World Problems”, “Strength”, “Lost Boys Syndrome” and “Ska Punk Girl”.

“Katie” sports an infectiously catchy chorus with whoas to boot and a funky bassline reminiscent of ones featured in some of my favorite VoC songs. “Arbitor of Bad Taste” has an awesome, Question The Answers era Mighty Mighty Bosstones-ish feel to it, as do “First World Problems” and “Strength”; all mixing danceable verses with pissed-off choruses.

“Lost Boys Syndrome” is slightly more tame than most of VoC’s extensive catalog but it’s catchy as fuck and really showcases frontman Mike Smyth’s voice. And the latter is a goofy song about, well, a stereotypical “ska punk girl”, reminiscent of NOFX‘s “Nubs”.

That should just about do it for this review! In closing, I’d like to say that I highly recommend Victims Of Circumstance to anyone searching for an awesome new ska-punk band to listen to. And if you’re in the St. Petersburg, Florida area, be sure to catch the band’s record release show at the State Theatre on June 14th! 5/5 Stars – You can stream the entire record below.
