For the first time, Team Dying Scene had two photographers on the ground and in the pits in Chicago for the annual 3-Day Riot Fest. It was a blast to have another great photographer documenting RF. We both have our own perspectives. This is mine for day 1, Friday, September 16, 2022.

 

On the day 1 train rides to Riot Fest, I queried those headed to Douglass Park about whom they were most looking forward to seeing play. It would have taken several pairs of hands to count how many attendees on the nearly full CTA train cars of the red and pink lines responded with Sincere Engineer. Chicago area’s Deanna Belos, performing under the stage name of Sincere Engineer, has been on a rocket ship to national stardom these past several years. It’s not hard to see why. Sincere Engineer combines infectiously great tunes with a self-effacing wit and an utterly charming stage presence. This was not her Riot Fest debut, but it was her first on one of the event’s main stages. She blasted out a set list including “Trust Me,” “Bottle Lightning Twice,” “Dragged Across The Finish Line” and of course, “Corn Dog Sonnet No.7.” That last song was the inspiration for the “Corn Dog Mosh Pit,” in which participants held up corn dogs as they slammed into each other. Back to those fans on the morning “L” rides headed to Riot Fest? Eager as they headed to Douglass Park and left Riot Fest satisfied. If Belos ever asked  “what am I supposed to do now?” I think a good response would be “pretty much whatever you want.”

Carolsdaughter, aka Thea Taylor, from Temecula, CA, is just a couple of months shy of her 18th birthday. However, has already witnessed her song “Violent” featured in over a quarter-million TikToks. Taylor, as Carolsdaughter, has also amassed 882.7K followers on her own TikTok channel. That’s in addition to the 183K followers on her Youtube channel. But the musician/comedian demonstrated that she is no flash-in-the-pan influencer too many often assume of young people with such large social media fan bases. Her performance at Riot Fest proved this. With an appearance recalling Gwen Stefani in her No Doubt days, Carolsdaughter utilized the entire stage, running from one corner to the next, with a few pogo jumps sprinkled in whilst belting out haunting lyrics. This included the aforementioned “Violent”: “don’t make me get violent,
I want my ring back, baby, that’s a diamond,
You don’t listen anyways, I’ll be quiet
I don’t really feel like fighting” was quite captivating.

As accomplished as she is at such a young age, it will be fun keeping an eye out for her future projects. We will be listening.


Boston Manor was founded in March 2013, in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. “Datura,” the band’s latest album is scheduled to be released on October 14, 2022, to critical acclaim. The record has thus far generated three singles, “Foxglove,” “Passenger,” and “Inertia.” As with the past Boston Manor releases, its sound is a fusion of punk, emo, dance, and electronica. The band’s Riot Fest set was intense as demonstrated through “Foxglove,” one of the above-mentioned recently released singles.

There was also a nice touch by guitar player Mikey Cunniff. Cunniff appeared on stage with a sports car yellow guitar emblazoned with Topo Chico branding and wearing a Placebo t-shirt. Placebo, one of the top billed Riot Fest 2022 artists, was forced to pull out of the festival, according to a statement the band put out, “…due to unprecedented visa and logistical issues beyond our control.” 


Taking Back Sunday, from my native land of Long Island, was back at Riot Fest after performing at the event in 2021. The band played a solid set much to the appreciation of many fans in the crowd. Those fans eagerly sang along as TBS ran through “Set Phasers to Stun,” “Timberwolves at New Jersey,” “You’re So Last Summer,” and “Flicker, Fader’.”

Taking Back Sunday, a Riot Fest semi-regular, was yet again a reliable part of the event and I’m sure this will be far from its last performance there.


The legendary Descendents kicked off their set with “Everything Sux.” Considering that the festival’s long-time slogan is “Riot Fest Sucks,” this was a great choice. Through nearly 30 songs, the Californians held their fans in sway as crowd surfing fans continually made it to the barricades before being pulled to safety by security personnel. In addition to the opening tune, Descendents also jammed through “I’m Not A Punk,” “I’m the One,” “Coffee Mug,” “When I Get Old,” “Merican,” “My Dad Sucks,” and “I Don’t’ Want to Grow Up.”

Descendents may sing about everything sucking but the band itself has never earned such a description.


San Diego’s Rocket From The Crypt has long been a fan favorite. With all members dressed in matching black attire with white trimmings, the group brought to mind a Mariachi band. Rocket From The Crypt had a common Riot Fest musical assignment: Playing one of its best albums in full, from start to finish.  In this case, it was the band’s penultimate album, 2001’s Group Sounds which features the very popular  “Savoir Faire,” and also includes “Straight American Slave,” “S.O.S,” “Carne Voodoo.” RFTC also performed “Sturdy Wrists”, “Glazed” and “Don’t Darlene “ from its second album Circa: Now!

Rocket From The Crypt members Speedo, Petey X, ND, Apollo 9, JC 2000, and Ruby Mars provided die-hard fans what they were looking for and it’s hard to imagine they didn’t pick up more than a few new fans in the process.


Yet another great band from California played, Goleta’s Lagwagon. The band’s walk-on music was Theme from “The Warriors” (composed by Barry De Vorzon) and its set sprinkled with humor as frontman Joey Cape led Lagwagon through a set which included “After You My Friend”, “Falling Apart,” “Wind in Your Sail,” “Island of Shame,” “Razor Burn.”

Many fans at the very front wore Lagwagon attire and appeared ecstatic that their time waiting, often crushed up against the metal barricades, paid off with an experience they’ll remember for years. 


Chicago’s own Alkaline Trio matched Lagwagon and perhaps even superseded them with choice of walk-on music. This time it was a tune that had stage and security personnel, the fans, and yes even us photographer singing in hearty unison. The tune which provoked this sunshiny moment in the darkness of just past the gloaming? One of the biggest hits by the legends (and Riot Fest alums) from just 85 miles west-northwest past Chicago. Of course the tune was “Surrender” by Cheap Trick. It was glorious.

Once on stage Alkaline Trio blazed through a set which included “Time to Waste,”  “Calling all Skeletons,” “Sadie,” “Fatally Yours,” “Bleeder,” and “Radio.” 

Matt Skiba, Dan Andriano and Derek Grant also had a couple of dedications to gift. 

“How about a love song? How about a love song for Chicago? Tonight. Another one” proposed guitarist/vocalist Skiba as he introduced “Every Thugs Needs a Lady,” on which bassist/vocalist Andriano took the lead vocals. The conclusion of the song led to this delightful (partial) exchange between Skiba and Andriano as drummer Derek Grant sat back took it in:

Skiba “That, that was a 9 and a half.” 

Andriano “Thanks buddy… see I’m getting better.”

Skiba: “I would have given you a ten I just don’t want you getting cocky on me right?”

Andriano: “I can’t be reading my clippings” …”…I get a little confidence boost though with that, thank you Matt”

Skiba: “…No problem bro.”

This was immediately followed by Skiba declaring “This song’s for the Descendents, it’s called “Mercy Me.”

Alkaline Trio capped an enjoyable day 1 for Dying Scene correspondents.

MEST has had a busy year so far touring across Europe before stopping back home to Chicago…and they are not done yet!


115 Bourbon Street is a New Orleans-themed venue packed with multiple stages and on Friday, June 28th hosted MEST and a slew of other bands, including Rematch, NightCap and Highwire.


MEST released the new album ‘Youth‘ via SBÄM Records on June 21st. It features guest appearances by Jaret Reddick of Bowling For Soup and Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills.

Of the new LP, founding member and front man Tony Lovato says, “The drives to the studio were about an hour and 20 minutes long. A lot of my inspiration for this record was found on those drives. I would just listen to all the records that I grew up listening to. Which brought back a ton of memories. It would just put me in another state of mind. The majority of “Youth” was written up in the hills of Los Angeles where I recorded a bunch of our early records. I would get random flashbacks seeing spots I hadn’t seen in years. But as much as I love all the memories and stories of the past, I’m not one to think that the best days are over. I’m creating new core memories and living my life now, so that in 20 years I’ll look back fondly. The same as I do now. These songs are a cheers to the past with a here’s to the future.”


MEST released their seventh album, ‘Masquerade,’ in January 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic. They toured extensively in 2019 with Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, and Millencolin. Looking ahead, MEST plans to release three new LPs, starting with ‘Youth,’ and has secured deals with Avex Records in Japan and SBAM Records in Europe.

When asked to sum up 28 years of MEST, Tony replied, “I don’t know, I mean honestly it feels like we’re just getting started…”


Maintaining their blue-collar work ethic, MEST continues to earn fans through their grassroots approach and looks forward to performing their energetic live shows worldwide. The future looks promising as they prepare to release new music and hit the road again.

MEST will continue to keep the ball rolling with shows in Mexico this month, followed by some West Coast stops in September.

Matt Goud, better known as Northcote, has a new full-length out now, done in true DIY fashion. Inspired by Indian devotional music and a renewed spirituality through nature, this record gives the listener a more stripped-down, raw sound than what may have been encountered in previous Northcote releases. As described by Goud in our interview, “there’s less of like guys playing a band, it’s more of almost like I performed the song live and then everyone jammed on top of it.”

You can almost feel the sporadic nature of the record, and can appreciate that even more than something so methodical and planned out. It plays right into the folk narrative of authenticity and simplicity. Although this record comes off less methodical than ones previous, the music in no way suffers. I found myself enjoying these tracks in a different way than I had previously when listening to full-band songs such as “Bitter End” or “How Can You Turn Around”.

Interviews like this are the reason I enjoy writing for Dying Scene so much. Matt Goud’s distinct blend of Americana and folk, paired with truthfully sincere lyrics that are almost therapeutic in nature have had probably the largest influence on both my songwriting and obsession with Americana music (I credit Northcote with leading me down a path to the likes of Tim Barry, Seth Anderson, Dan Andriano, and many others). Pairing this interview with the one I just did with Roger Harvey gives you a pretty solid look at how my music taste has started evolving as of late.
What made this interview even cooler were a couple of the coincidences that emerged right as we started talking. I noticed we were both wearing the same Bouncing Souls hoodie that I got down at Fest in October. I then mentioned having seen Northcote play with Dave Hause in Nashville at the historic Bluebird Cafe, Northcote’s only time playing here. He then held up a Bluebird Cafe mug from his trip here. Just a couple little coincidences that got our conversation rolling and assured me that this was going to be a good one.

Dying Scene (Nathan Kernell NastyNate): Hey man, thanks so much for sitting down with me. Before we get started man, I just want to say it’s really an honor getting to talk with you. You’ve been probably the most influential songwriter for me over the years and your music has helped me through a lot, specifically Hope is Made of Steel. I saw you back in, I wanna say 2018, it was that tour you did with Dave Hause where you came down to Nashville. You weren’t playing the date, it was at Bluebird Café, but you still got up and played a couple songs and that’s what first introduced me to your music. I’ve kind of followed along ever since.

Matt Goud (Northcote): Right on well that’s cool to hear. Weird coincidences right with the mug, I had no idea where you were based out of.

Actually I took my brother to that show, that was his first concert ever and we were sitting right side stage, had a great view. It was awesome. That’s still today one of my favorite shows ever. That was such a cool show.

That was a good trip, that was 2018 or 2019. I came down there, just maybe did a week or two. Sometimes he invites me to do that, where else did we play on that? One I remember going to is Richmond and maybe Boston was on that one too. That was fun, those are special times going to hang with Dave.

Oh yeah, that was the first time I got to see him, now I’ve seen him three or four times since. I actually just saw him a couple months ago across town at a different venue. So let’s go ahead and get started man, I really wanted to talk about the new record, out March 17. What was the meaning behind calling it Wholeheart?

The idea of the album art kind of came to me in a dream almost. I had a dream where I was sitting at kind of a campfire with a friend and there was a big scene around the dream where there were kids there, police officers and the president of the United States, my dad was there, and my grandparents who have passed away were there. And there was like a feel and we’re looking at the campfire, me and my friend, and the campfire was kind of like an atom or like a ball, like the earth almost. And just that oneness, the feeling I had of looking at that campfire made me think of whole heart. This also comes from the devotion I feel over the years from singing, it’s kind of what I’m trying to do in my music, the devotion to singing and practicing, meeting people, to give it your all.

You mentioned the artwork, do you do all your artwork for your singles and your full lengths?

Over the years my friend John Gerard has done the majority of the artwork: Hope is Made of Steel, the self-titled, Gather No Dust, Let Me Roar. This one though, a friend from town named Alex Murray was available. John just put out a book and said he was kind of busy at the time I was looking for a piece. Alex Murray did the artwork, we were on a recreation soccer team together.

Were these recorded near you in British Columbia?

The material was written in ‘21, recorded May 2022 and will be released March 2023. So a long process. It was made here in Vancouver Island with Colin Stewart at a place called the Hive, and they’re pretty famous for kind of fuzzy indie rock, they’re kind of the most well-known studio out here for that. Colin’s partner did Japandroids in the same studio, so there’s that West Coast kind of indie rock thing. That’s what he’s all about, he had never recorded a scream, like I have a guest vocalist from my favorite hardcore band on track 2, it’s called “Man Inside the Glass” and he had never recorded a hardcore scream. He had been making records for 20 years, that’s kind of funny, that was a fun day.

So on your website you talked about exploring Indian devotional and chant music with this new record. Can you kind of elaborate on that a little bit because I know nothing about Indian devotional music.

Me neither *laughs*. Well I set out to write these songs and I was writing in a similar way that I had always done, go with the verses and the chorus and try to come up with something catchy. Meanwhile, during the pandemic I had a bunch of changes in my life. I had found some spirituality that I had been missing for a few years and that was helping me feel a bit more relaxed and I just had a sense of calmness and easiness. Some of what I found was, I went to a cloud meditation class and the teacher gave one verse from the Bhagavad Gita, which is an Indian spiritual text, and she was teaching this verse and I was sitting there, this is my first time I’ve ever tried anything like that, and it was just word by word learning this chant. And I kind of got the hang of it and I would say it to myself and I noticed that when I’m going to play my guitar, I was doing more chanting than songwriting. And so it just kind of started to take over my jam time and so then it just blended together.

So you mentioned exploring Indian devotional chants, but you also mentioned this record bringing you back to your days of playing with Means.

Well this record is gonna be DIY for me, what I mean by that is just putting it out with help of friends and family, like no record label or booking agent or anything, and because of that, I’m not as concerned with the business of the album. I need to make some money to pay off the album, but other than that I don’t have my eye on a single or radio campaign you know. This is the first interview I’ve done about it actually. So I knew that going into the record because I was exploring some spiritual things and there’s some screaming on the record. It reminds me of a Means record called Sending You Strength. We had that whole record planned out before we went to the studio, I had the track listing planned out, the artwork, I had the transitions, there was a spoken word song I had, all the riffs, but I couldn’t really visualize it. With WholeHeart I really could visualize what I wanted to feel, what I wanted the vibe of the record to be. Before, I was more collaborative like with the drums, guitar solos, making it more Americana or something, which is great, I’m glad I got to try on that. But there’s no songs that are gonna be big in Nashville on this record.

I mean I’m not too fond of a lot of songs that are big in Nashville anyways *laughs*.

The dream I had to be a songwriter is kind of over, I’m really trying to be a singer you know. The chanting music has really brought a new facet to my singing which I could not see coming, it reminds me of hardcore screaming kind of too. The way it feels and my body, it’s like I’m tired after I do it.

That actually kind of relates to my next question, what do you think is the biggest difference with this new record? I mean your last record came out during COVID, there are several artists I’ve talked to where it’s kind of the same thing, where their new releases are post COVID and they talk about it being such a drastic difference because COVID was such a dark time and now it’s kind of back to normal. So would you say that that’s kind of the biggest difference between Let Me Roar and Wholeheart?

I think with Let Me Roar, we had a tour with the whole band like we had full drums, there was a full bass, we wanted to go and play in theaters and with the band. But we didn’t tour, so we made a concert movie with the band. This record, there isn’t really a band on the record you know all of the Northcote people helped me make it, everyone. It’s not DIY because everyone helped me out with it, but like Mike never played a snare drum or high hat, he played like a concert bass drum, a standup bass drum you know. A lot of the bass guitar was done on a Wurlitzer. So there’s less of like guys playing a band, it’s more of almost like I performed the song live and then everyone jammed on top of it. It’s kind of like if we were hanging out at your basement there and I was like ‘hey guys here’s the new song “Can’t Stay the Same”‘ and Mike grabbed the bass drum, and Steven grabbed the guitar, and Eric sat at the piano, it’s more like that.

You can almost appreciate music like that more sometimes because sometimes you hear that everything’s so planned and everything’s so methodical. You can sometimes appreciate being sporadic and just jamming over top of something. That’s awesome. So with your first two singles for this record, is there a type of theme? It seems the outdoors is kind of a main focus with the first two.

Oh cool, I’m just putting this together in my head because I’m not sure what I would say in an interview yet. But I will say that I live in Vancouver Island, and we had this thing during the pandemic here, it was a big protest about the logging industry. And there was like the police, and the protesters, and the logging industry, and the government. There was this big protest essentially about it. I went to one of the rallies and listened to an Indigenous speaker and he was saying something to encourage the crowd to kind of find their side of themselves which connects to nature. It wasn’t about the money or the cops or any of the politics, he encouraged the crowd to think about who you are, like where do you come, where were you born, and how would you fit in with nature and water and trees. I thought that was so profound because, as a white guy, I don’t always think of myself as like coming from nature. Indigenous people become one with the land almost, it’s really important to them. But me, I’m a farm kid from Saskatchewan, I don’t have that connection, I don’t feel like I know where I come from in that deep way. So I think a lot of the poetry on the record will have nature as an influence.

That kind of really intrigues me because that’s kind of the type of journey I’ve had the past 2-3 years. I was living in and going to school in a small town in East Tennessee, a lot of nature around, and I kind of started finding that spirituality in nature. So I wanted to kind of talk about your upbringing a little bit. With you growing up in a small town, what music were you introduced that kind of led to you being in Means and ultimately brought you to where you are now with your unique blend of kind of Americana folk music?

I’m the oldest sibling, but I did have older friends who introduced me to punk rock and hardcore, that was probably grade 8, grade 7. You know the first time I heard Nirvana and NOFX, I remember I was in grade 6 and I rode in a car with some older kids, we were going to a hockey school, that’s the first time I heard NOFX and Nirvana and the fast drumming of NOFX that blew my mind. So it kind of went from there I mean I always liked kinda pissed off political punk quite a bit, but I like Christian hardcore stuff too. Christian rock, I like that. I mean I grew up in that culture and I would say when Means got going, we were all pretty devout, we were all from devout families of faith, but we all wanted to play music with everybody and being from Canada there wasn’t a big Christian hardcore scene. So we just grew up playing with everybody, my favorite tours were with Shai Hulud and Misery Signals. Then when Means broke up, going into country music or Americana music, it was kind of a hard transition because a lot of my influences were indie rock, but my simple, more folky songs seemed to get a better response. So I think as I went along my songs got a bit more simple.

I was interested to hear your answer because it’s kind of a weird transition, going from Christian hardcore to what you’re doing now.

Yeah what else can I tell you about that … well I mean coming out of the hardcore scene, I knew that Means did well, like I was happy and I loved that band so much. But when the band was over, I wanted to see what it was like in different genres, like we never played in the bar, we never played with indie rock bands, we were way too heavy. So it was a challenge at first and it was a novelty too to play in coffee shops and bars. Then once I got a few tours, then I started having fun, like meeting people and drinking and getting into the bar scene, then I started getting to travel around the world and it kind of got rolling. And now I’m back at the start.

Currently, I think I read in your bio you work as a mental health worker?

Yeah!

The reason I ask that is because, for me your music is very therapeutic. Hope is Made of Steel, that record helped me through a really rough time right after I discovered your music, after seeing you live. With your music, is that kind of a goal, is it kind of therapeutic to help people or is it more of a reflection of personal experience, is it maybe a mix of both?

I think it’s therapeutic to help. I mean I don’t know what it’s like on the other side of my music, like sometimes when my songs come on in the car, like if my wife is playing it or something, I feel embarrassed and I switch the track. But making the songs, the process of writing them or whatever, I think it’s helping me, this is what I like to do to and it’s a part of my identity. This is how I spend my time. I’m not trying to be any therapy thing, I was trying to get a hit song so I could buy a condo *laughs*. So somewhere in between that yeah.

Are you still currently a hockey broadcaster now?

This is the first year I’ve got to do that and it’s hilarious, it’s for the University of Victoria.

Gotcha, so do you have an NHL team you root for, are you a Canucks guy?

I cheer for Edmonton, because I grew up in Saskatchewan so I grew up pretty close to Minot, North Dakota. So that’s the zone right that I’m from, or Bismarck, that’s like 3 hours, 4 hours away. So you could cheer for Winnipeg, Calgary, or Edmonton, those were the close teams.

I’m happy hearing that because I’m a Blues guy, I’m from Saint Louis, so Winnipeg is no good and then Vancouver knocked us out a couple years ago, one of my buddies is a big Vancouver guy so he was rubbing in my face and everything.

So we’re kind of winding down here, something I always like to ask with songwriting in general, for you do lyrics come first or does music come first? Something I kind of always struggle with in my own songwriting is finding what’s gonna come first.

I think the answer for me is kind of like music with one line. Oftentimes when I journal, what I journal won’t make it into the song, but it’ll give me a start. Like “Can’t Stay the Same,” that was kind of just like a thing I would just write down, I just had it in my head. And so it took me a while to find the right music, but once I found that, the chorus opened up and the song opened up. So I would say music usually with one word or a line.

That’s a new one, I haven’t heard that one yet. So you said you weren’t able to tour at all for Let Me Roar, I mean it was during the height of COVID. Do you have a bunch of dates scheduled to do some support for the record, or do you have something in the works for that?

I do, yeah. I’m self-booking shows in Western Canada, so I’m just gonna run out from Vancouver Island back home to Saskatchewan, turn around and then come back. So it’s just 14 days, then from there I don’t know what’s gonna happen. I would love to go overseas again maybe, but I’m just trying to get one tour under my belt because of booking it myself. Once I get that going then maybe I will see how it goes.

Well I can’t wait to see what happens. That about covers everything I think. Lastly, I guess I’ll ask where does the name Northcote come from?

It kind of means the North shelter. At the time I was living in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, which is an Arctic town. It kind of was inspired by a poem about just a shelter, like a birdhouse, inspired by that. I have a lot of birdhouse and I just like the Northcote thing. Of course, now I like it because of an actual coat, like now when I think about the name, sometimes write it C-O-A-T because I’ve been made fun of enough times. Some of my friends called me Cote. And then I met the singer Craig from The Hold Steady and he told me I should lower a giant coat from the ceiling when I go on stage *laughs*. Like lower a giant coat and just put it on before I do my Americana classics. So it was inspired by where I was living at the time and I liked shelter part.

Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is the weekly* column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time and this week’s Record Radar is fucking yuuuuuuge. Let’s get into it!

AFI’s Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes has been out of print since 2015, but it seems there’s a new unofficial pressing, potentially on yellow colored vinyl, making the rounds. I’ve seen this pop up at Death13ss Records a few times in the past week and it sells out really quick every time. If you’re chasing this record as hard as I’ve been, your best bet is to Favorite the product page on their Shopify store to be alerted if/when more copies are in stock.

How about some officially sanctioned releases? Kourtney Kardashian’s husband’s old band The Aquabats’ first three records are getting some snazzy colored vinyl reissues. Coming to a record store near you on May 24th, it’s The Return of The Aquabats! (on wax for the first time), The Fury of The Aquabats! (previously out of print for 6 years) & The Aquabats Vs. The Floating Eye of Death! (also on vinyl for the first time ever). You can pre-order all three records here.

St. Louis’ Wes Hoffman & Friends are releasing their new album How It Should Be this coming Friday, February 23rd. Jump Start Records has two sweet color variants as well as black wax on their webstore, while Canada’s Wrecking Crew Records has an exclusive coke bottle clear variant (their store seems to be down but I guess you can message them on Instagram to buy a copy if you want that variant). Check out the latest single below! Highly recommended listening for fans of newer MxPx.

Here’s something cool! Washington, DC label For Love of Records is putting out a yuge Dischord Records tribute compilation featuring local bands covering songs by Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Jawbox, etc. Head over to their Bandcamp where you can listen to the whole thing and pre-order the 2xLP titled DC Does Dischord on some really awesome looking color variants.

Bracket’s 1994 debut album Forestville St 924 is being reissued by SBAM Records in honor of its 30th birthday. There are two color variants – blue marbled & white marbled – supposedly limited to 50 copies each, which I feel like has to be a typo considering these have been up for pre-order for over a week and haven’t sold out. Either that or this is the least in-demand reissue of a record that’s been out of print for 30 years. Anyway, get your copy here!

After giving their new single “Still” one listen, German melodic punk band For Heads Down went from being a band I’d inexplicably never heard of, to a band with one of my most anticipated records of 2024. The band’s self titled album is due out on April 19th, with Thousand Islands Records handling the US release and Disconnect Disconnect Records spreading it throughout Europe. Check out that single below and buy this record!!!

British ska-punks Call Me Malcolm have a new album called Echoes and Ghosts coming out on March 1st via Bad Time Records. Check out the latest single below and get the record here on a color variant that is equally as beautiful as its name is long: Electric Blue w/ Bone & Red Splatter. The band has another variant with a slightly less impressive character count (Electric Blue / Red color-in-color) available on their webstore as well. Members of the Bad Time Record Club will be receiving their own exclusive variant via snail mail next month, too.

Face to Face gave the very polarizing Ignorance is Bliss its first-ever vinyl release a few years ago (now that I think of it 2019 was actually 5 years ago, is that a few?). That was a 2xLP release and I remember it selling out fast as fuck. Anyway, now they’re reissuing the record for its 25th Anniversary and it’s a 4×10″ release this time. There are 3 color variants – Graphite, Cyan Blue & Doublemint – with 1,000 copies total. The price? 60 fuckin’ smackers. I’ll pass, but maybe you want it: send your money here.

Green Day’s Kerplunk is back in print for the first time in a long time. For some reason this record hasn’t gotten a repress since 2014 and I don’t mean to alarm any of you but that was a fuckin’ decade ago. Sheesh. Anyway, Kerplunk’s back on the menu! 1-2-3-4 Go! Records seems to be the place where this is most readily available online, but I’ve seen a few rekkid stores posting that copies have started to trickle in, so maybe your local store has it? Perchance.

If you like the Flatliners or mid-period Millencolin, you should check out Scotland’s Cold Years! They’ve got a new record called A Different Life coming out on April 26th. Check out the lead single “Roll With It” below and go here to pre-order the record on Half Black, Half Blood Red with White Splatter colored vinyl (say that 10 times fast!).

Fat Music for Fat People turns 30 in the year of our lord 2024, so naturally it’s time for a repress. This has been out of print (on colored vinyl at least) since 2012, so Fat’s US store sold out of the standalone LP pretty much immediately. They do have some Colored LP + Shirt bundles left, however (as well as black wax), and you can still get it on colored vinyl from their Australian webstore.

After whetting our whistles with a 20th anniversary compilation album last year, Belgian punks the Priceduifkes have announced a new album with new songs! Dancing Dirty comes out on March 15th on Striped Records, who you can purchase the record from here if you’re in Europe, or you like paying a lot to ship records to the US. If you don’t like paying a lot to ship records to the US, you’re in luck! Our friends at Mom’s Basement Records are selling this record, in the US! Also be sure to add that awesome new Odorants record to your cart before checking out.

Have you heard about the new Hot Water Music album? No? Well, let me tell you about the new Hot Water Music album. It’s called Vows and it’s due out May 10th on Equal Vision Records. There’s a bunch of color variants for this one, some of which have already sold out. You can find links to all the places you can purchase them with your preferred fiat currency here.

A bunch of dudes from Voodoo Glow Skulls (who, fun fact, I recently learned have blocked Dying Scene on all their social media accounts lmao), Death By Stereo and a few other bands have a new band called Mutiny. Their debut EP is being released by Ska Punk International as a 12” with a 30 page manga for the weebs. The first pressing is limited to 300 copies and that shit sold the fuck out. Maybe there’ll be a second pressing? I have no clue. Stay tuned!

Asbestos Records is releasing a split 7” from The Homeless Gospel Choir and Dissidente, both covering Dead Milkmen songs. There are three different splatter variants, each of which looks sick as hell and is limited to 250 copies. Get it here.

As if The Offspring didn’t already have enough Greatest Hits album, here’s another one! Puck Punks: Powerplay Hits was released as part of the Anaheim Ducks’ Come Out and Play Night with The Offspring!. It’s limited to 1,000 copies on orange vinyl and features “Want You Bad”, “All I Want”, and a few shitty songs from Let The Bad Times Roll. Surprisingly, “Come Out and Play” is omitted from the tracklist. People are trying to sell this piece of shit for $100+ on discogs, but you can get it from the Anaheim Ducks Team Store for the somewhat more justifiable price of $34.95.

The full release list for the 2024 our third favorite retail holiday Record Store Day was just announced. I gotta say, the lineup is actually pretty impressive this time around, and there’s quite a few releases on tap for the punk rock-centric collector. The full list can be found here, but these are the ones I think you guys will be interested in picking up:

Speaking of the Offspring, here’s another Offspring record! You can’t buy this one right now though, you gotta wait til Record Store Day (April 20th, 2024 for those who are unaware). It’s a 20th Anniversary reissue of Splinter, limited to 2,500 copies on… wait for it! Picture disc. For some reason. This record’s a bitch to come by though, so I’ll probably pay $35 for it or whatever the fuck they wanna hawk this shit for.

It wouldn’t be Record Store Day without the Ramones estate repackaging previously released material for the 20th time to top up their bank accounts. But hey, I’m not complaining, I eat this shit up every time! RSD 2024 blesses us with The 1975 Sire Demos, which is exactly what it sounds like: a bunch of early Ramones demos. Limited*** to 13,500 copies (lol) on ultra-clear w/ black splatter vinyl. In the extremely unlikely case that Mickey Leigh or Linda Ramone happen to be reading this, I beg you, please reissue the following: Acid Eaters, Mondo Bizarro, Adios Amigos, Loco Live & We’re Outta Here!. Maybe you can do a 90’s box set? And then double dip with some standalone color variants for each. Hire me for your marketing department! I’ve no shortage of million dollar ideas.

Speaking of double dipping with standalone color variants, look no further than this RSD Exclusive reissue of Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros’ Rock Art and the X-Ray Style. Following last year’s Mescaleros full discography box set (still available for $140 on Amazon btw) is the standalone reissue of this record. I think they did the same with Streetcore, too. Anyway, I guess if you just want this record this is a good value proposition for you. It’s a 2xLP limited to 1,800 copies on pink wax.

The Dead Milkmen’s 1987 album Bucky Fellini has never gotten a repress, until now that is. The record has been remastered and is being reissued as a 2xLP on “Ducky Yellow” colored vinyl, packaged in a snazzy gatefold jacket. The official RSD site says this limited to 4,500 copies… but also says it’s limited to 5,000 copies. You decide what you want to believe.

Frank Turner’s got a new record called Undefeated coming out in May, but he’s also got a 7” featuring a song from that record – “Girl from the Record Shop” – coming out a few weeks early for Record Store Day. This 7” is limited to 2,000 copies and is also gonna include a B-Side called “All Night Crew”.

Here’s a real fuckin’ big time reissue. Unwritten Law’s debut album Blue Room is getting released on vinyl for the first time ever, 30 years after its original release. It’s limited to 939 copies on navy blue colored vinyl and is branded as a “RSD First” Release, which leaves the door open for other variants down the line (and I’m sure there will be many). I’m pretty excited for this one and it’s probably going to be enough motivation to line up early outside the local store.

I feel like I’ve heard the name The Didjits before (it sounds familiar anyway) but I’d never listened to these guys until now. This shit’s bad ass! They’ve got a Double LP called Strictly Dynamite: The Best of Didjits coming out on Record Store Day. It’s limited to 1,500 copies on 180g green vinyl and includes a bunch of rare bonus tracks and shit (all of which would have been new to me regardless since I’d never heard of the Didjits lol). Editor’s note: Actually I take that back, the Offspring covered “Killboy Powerhead”, so I guess I’ve kinda sorta heard at least one Didjits song before.

The last Record Store Day 2024 release I’ll be featuring in this week’s Record Radar is 40 Years of Kepi & The Groovie Ghoulies, which is doing double duty as a greatest hits collection for both the Groovie Ghoulies and their fearless frontman-turned-solo artist Kepi Ghoulie. It’s a Double LP set with an orange record and a purple one, limited to 900 copies. Hey Kepi, Let’s Go! to the record store and buy this bad ass record!

Wrapping things up, I thought I’d do something a little different on this week’s Record Radar: featuring a CD release! Yes, you read that right, compact disc. Those are pretty fucking cool, too. Especially when they’re released by an awesome band from your hometown that you didn’t know existed until your friend in New York told you about them. Clearwater, Florida’s Toe Knife kicks ass. Their new EP Endless Cycle kicks ass. It’d be pretty kick ass if you checked it out and bought the CD (or maybe just buy the digital download if you don’t share my affection for shiny little plastic discs).

Cassette releases continue to infiltrate the Record Radar, and we’ve got a very special one batting leadoff this week! The friendly people at Tapehead City are partnering with Hellcat Records for this 35th anniversary cassette reissue of Operation Ivy’s Energy. This is the first time this has ever been reissued on the tiny, plastic, rectangular format.

Tapehead City owner Charlie Kaplan had this to say about the reissue: “Me and my friends grew playing in bands that would always cover Rancid and Opivy. These songs have been a part of me for so long. Working on this project was so much fun and such an honor. I really hope the fans are happy with the tapes. I think they came out great.”

There are two variants, limited to 1,000 copies each: a “2-Tone” tape made using scans of the original shell, and a “UV Edition” with an awesome all-over art print on the tape. You can pre-order both here, along with a fun Op Ivy x Tapehead City mashup shirt.

Here’s another bad ass 35th anniversary reissue, and this one’s on vinyl! Indianapolis junk rock pioneers Sloppy Seconds‘ classic debut album Destroyed is back in print for the first time in a long time, thanks to Puke ‘N’ Vomit Records. You can get it on coral (orange) and/or black wax right here.

Up next, we’ve got a big batch of awesome new records coming very soon from our friends at Memorable But Not Honorable Records, the first of which is Rhode Island pop-punk band Pavid Vermin’s debut LP Brutality Is My Only Friend. It’s limited to 100 copies on blood red colored vinyl and will be available on their webstore this coming Friday, May 24th. Keep your eyes glued to Dying Scene the day before, I think we might be doing something cool!

MBNH is also putting out a killer 7” featuring four brand new tracks from pop-punk favorites The Putz. On and Up and Out is limited to 200 copies on clear blue colored vinyl and is being co-released by I Buy Records in Italy. It’ll also be available to purchase from Memorable But Not Honorable Friday, May 24th.

And last but certainly not least in Memorable But Not Honorable’s impressive release lineup is the 2nd pressing of their Saturday Morning Lineup compilation, limited to 100 copies on (Ninja Turtle?) green colored wax. This was originally released this time last year on white colored vinyl, which quickly sold out. It features covers of cartoon theme songs from The Putz, Zoanoids, Atomic Treehouse, Goin’ Places & many other great bands. You can buy it with your money from their webstore on – you guessed it – Friday, May 24th!

A few weeks ago Down By Law announced their new album Crazy Days, due out June 15th on Cleopatra Records, but at the time it was only available to pre-order on CD (otherwise known as compact disc but us in the trade). Now you can get it on beautiful red marble colored vinyl right here.

Guttermouth’s Eat Your Face turns 20 this year and to celebrate SBAM is releasing it on our treasured polyvinyl chloride music format for the very first time. There are two color variants, limited to 250 copies each allegedly. You can get them from any of SBAM’s regional webstores.

AFI’s 1999 classic Black Sails in the Sunset is getting a big time expanded reissue in honor of its 25th Anniversary. It’s due out July 19th and features bonus tracks in the previously unreleased “Weight of Words” and B-Side “Who Knew?”. This is being released on a handful of color variants but all but one of them sold out almost immediately. The one that’s still available to purchase is the Neon Orange retail variant, which you can get from Amazon and pretty much anywhere else (Amazon’s the cheapest though, of course).

Another anniversary! Perhaps not quite as significant as Black Sails but worth mentioning nonetheless. It’s the 10th anniversary of The Flatliners frontman Chris Cresswell’s One Week Record, and Fat Wreck Chords has repressed it for the first time since its original release. There are two color variants to choose from: Pink/white vinyl (150 copies) and green w/ yellow splatter (250 copies). Or, I guess there were two color variants to choose from, because the pink one’s already sold out. The green w/ yellow splatter is still available from Fat Wreck’s European webstore.

That Descendents Circle Jerks split 7” finds itself on the Record Radar for the third time; perhaps that’s a new record? Anyway, I guess it’s noteworthy that a new European exclusive clear color variant has popped up. You can get it here. And in case you missed it last week, the red color variant (limited to 500 copies) is still available on the Descendents’ US store.

Sammy Kay’s got a new record called July 1960 due out on July 19th. It’s being co-released by Sell the Heart Records (US) and Engineer Records (UK) on Coke Bottle Clear and black wax. Mr. Kay has some copies with a special silkscreened jacket on his Bandcamp as well. Also available: CDs, shirts, etc!

We started this week’s Record Radar with a cassette release, so why not wrap things up with another cassette release? Two street punk bands, Philadelphia’s English Teeth and Las Vegas’ Fool’s Errand, have a brand new split EP out now and you can get it on snazzy orange cassette right here. It’s only $1 but I know damn well they had to have paid more than that to make these so I’d implore you to pay a bit more than that. If cassettes aren’t your thing, digital download is an option as well!

All? NO! ALL! ALL’s latest album, 2000’s Problematic, is back in print! Four snazzy new color variants: yellow w/ red splatter (1,000 copies, buy here), blue w/ yellow splatter (300 copies, buy here), red in neon yellow (300 copies, buy here), and neon yellow (? copies, EU indie variant). If you don’t care about color variants, you can get this on black wax for $10(!!!) on Amazon right now. Yes, you’re reading that right, 10 bucks for an LP in 2023!

Here’s a weird one… AFI’s Crash Love hasn’t gotten an official repress since its original release in 2009 (I can already hear you crying “b-b-but AFI isn’t punk!!!!!” – save your breath, nobody fucking cares). Recently, a bunch of e-tailers launched pre-orders for a new pressing. Some bill it as an official release, others say it’s an Import, which is basically a nicer way to say “this shit’s counterfeit”. There were a lot of places to buy this last week, but not it seems Loud Pizza (US) and Le Noise (Canada) are the only stores with it still listed.

The Suicide Machines 2xLP rarities compilation On The Eve Of Destruction 1991-1995 is getting a new pressing from Asbestos Records. There are 500 copies spread across two color variants: blue/black split and red/black split. Get it here. There’s a few copies of the last pressing still available here as well.

Two cool new represses from Pirates Press Records this week. Up first is Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards’ 2004 LP Viking. 500 copies on black and blood red striped colored vinyl. Get it here.

Also from Pirates Press: A sweet new color variant for The SlackersWasted Days! 1,000 copies on beautiful neon green w/ black splatter colored wax. Get it here.

Alright, let’s take a lil break from all the represses and reissues, and talk about some new records! Have you heard about Snuff’s new album Come On If You Think You’re Rachmaininoff? No? Well, it’s an acoustic album, and it’s due out June 9th on SBÄM Records. Check out the new acoustic version of “One of those Days” below, and pre-order the LP on one of two very colorful splatter variants here (EU) / here (AUS).

Here’s a new release that seemingly came out of nowhere. Step aside “The Decline”, Italian melodic punks LineOut’s new album Andromeda is one continuous 52-minute long song, and it’s fucking bad ass. Check that shit out below and grab the record here. These guys are killer – highly recommended listening!

Mama mia! It’s another new release from an awesome Italian punk band! All Coasted’s new EP Never Ending Puppet Show releases June 9th (that’s next Friday!) on Striped Records. Check out the latest single & pre-order the record here.

And while you’re on Striped Records’ webstore pre-ordering that All Coasted record, grab this new pressing of The Manges & The Queers Acid Beaters split LP. Limited to 500 copies on red wax, just in time for its 20th anniversary. Get it here.

In case you haven’t already heard, Rancid has a new album out; it’s called Tomorrow Never Comes. Anywho, Epitaph’s ever-creative marketing department has found a way to offload some black wax onto you sick variant addicts. How? By screen printing a bunch of jackets with an alternate cover to house 2,000 black vinyl copies. And somehow these are worth 12 bucks more than a standard black copy! I don’t play this game, but maybe you do. Fork over your cash here, suckers.

We’ll get back to some more new releases in a bit, here’s some more new pressings of old shit. Dischord Records has repressed Fugazi’s Red Medicine on an undisclosed number of pieces of red vinyl. Get it here.

Dischord has also repressed Minor Threat’s Out of Step on an undisclosed number of white colored LPs. Very cool! Get it here.

DustyWax Records gave Pulley‘s Matters and Together Again for the First Time their first-ever vinyl releases in 2020 (that dreaded year seems like an eternity ago, doesn’t it?). Those sold out pretty fast, so they’ve issued a second pressing. There are three color variants for both LPs, each limited to 100 copies. The DustyWax webstore has its own exclusive variants, as well as Thousand Islands Records and Bearded Punk Records‘ respective online stores.

Australian punk veterans Bodjyar‘s 1998 album No Touch Red is getting a 25th Anniversary reissue, with 150 copies on translucent red vinyl and another 150 copies on “ultra clear” colored vinyl. Get ’em here.

Back in print for the first time in 17 years, Avail’s 4AM Friday is getting reissued as a Double LP with the second LP featuring a 15-song live set recorded at San Fransisco’s Bottom of the Hill in 1997. The orange w/ black splatter variant is limited to 488 copies and is available here. You can also get it on black vinyl here.

Pennywise’s From the Ashes turns 20 this year, and it’s getting reissued for the first time ever! There are 500 copies on “spring green w/ tangerine splatter” colored wax (Epitaph US store), as well as 300 copies on clear w/ black and orange splatter (Epitaph EU store), and you know our buddies at Newbury Comics had to get in on the action with their own $34 variant. Also available on black vinyl on Amazon for the more frugal minded (shoutout to my dawg Jeffy B).

Let’s wrap things up with some new releases, shall we? TV Cult is a relatively new band from Cologne, Germany that plays “80s Infused Brutal Post-Punk” (their words, not mine). Their debut album Colony is due out November 24th on Flight 13 Records. Check out the lead single “Party’s Over” below and pre-order the LP on “transparent petrol” colored vinyl here.

And last but not least, we have a new band with some familiar faces. Lektron is fronted by Alkaline Trio‘s Matt Skiba, who is joined by drummer Atom Willard (Rocket from the Crypt, Against Me!, Angels & Airwaves, etc.) and AFI’s Hunter Burgan. Their debut 2-song 12″ is out now on Asian Man Records, and it’s already sold out. Listen below and lookout for a full-length album at some point.

Continuing the Record Radar’s recent trend of diversifying into other formats, this week’s first featured release is a cassette! That’s right, a cassette. It’s Buddy Buddy Belgium, the new album from pop-punk supergroup Scrapped Plans, ft. members of House Boatthe Steinways, The MurderburgersWrong Life, Don Blake, aaaaand Mike Erg of course!

A few weeks ago I told you about Bloated Kat Records‘ putting this one out on random colored vinyl (you can still buy that here), but now you can also get it on cassette. This is limited to 50 tapes – half are white, half are black – and it’s Dying Scene Records’ first new release in 6 years! Pay money for it here and it’ll show up in your mailbox in a few weeks, maybe with some other goodies? I’d also like to mention I teamed up with Punk Rock Radar and Cat’s Claw Records on this release, and you can get it from them as well.

Back to our regularly scheduled discussion of flattened 12″ discs of polyvinyl chloride, Punk Rock Radar also has UK skate punk / ska band Stank Finger‘s new record Three Finger Discount up for pre-order. Limited to 100 copies on slime green colored vinyl, this is a highly recommended pickup for fans of Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, [spunge], etc. etc. etc. These guys are bad ass! Pick this record up. Our Bri’ish m8s will be able to get the record (or CD!) from the band soon.

Have you heard about Czech melodic punks Krang‘s new album Listens to Krang Once? It’s coming out May 3rd on SBAM Records and spoiler alert: it’s pretty fucking bad ass. The lead single “Cowabunga” is now streaming (check it out down below) and the record is available to pre-order on four different Ninja Turtles themed color variants. Grab yours here (US) or here (EU). Note: The EU store has a bundle with all four variants!

That’s not the only bad ass new record coming soon on SBAM, however. Chaser‘s highly anticipated new album Small Victories lands on June 28th and is being co-released by Thousand Islands and Pee Records. And last up from SBAM, we’ve got Portland folk punk band the Bridge City Sinners‘ new record In the Age of Doubt, which is due out on July 12th. This one’s being co-released by Flail Records and both labels have exclusive color variants available on their respective webstores. Fail Records also has copies on CD, cassette, and 8 track (and no, I’m not bullshitting about that last one).

Just in time for its 30th birthday, the Smoking Popes 1994 classic Born to Quit is back in print! In addition to this being the first pressing in over a decade, it’s also the very first time the original, non-remastered version of this album has been released on vinyl. Very cool! You can get it on pink & white “sunburn” colored vinyl here, and Rough Trade also has an exclusive navy blue color variant limited to 200 copies. Both come in a gatefold jacket emblazoned with the original artwork.

Down By Law‘s got a new record called Crazy Days coming out on June 15th and, what’s that? This is another CD release on the Record Radar? gasp! Yeah, that’s right, this bad boy’s only available on compact disc (and digital) at the moment, but rest assured, vinyl is coming soon for you fucking hipsters (I, too, am a fucking hipster). For now, embrace the affordability and convenience of the shiny lil discs.

Fat Wreck Chords recording artist MakeWar has a new record coming out on June 28th. Check out the lead single from A Paradoxical Theory of Change down below and pre-order the album on colored vinyl (take note of Fat’s new and improved $25 price point!), black vinyl (for the same price colored vinyl was up until a week ago), and/or CD (we like those!) right here.

Joe Gittleman continues to keep busy following the collapse of the (Mighty Mighty) Bosstones. You’ve probably already heard his new project The Kilograms, but did you know he’s got a new solo album on the way? That’s right, the Bass Fiddleman’s debut solo LP Hold Up is due out June 21st on Bad Time Records. Check out the excellent first single “Plastered in the Rafters” below and get the record on Coke Bottle Green colored vinyl (ltd to 250 copies) right here.

Speaking of debut solo albums, Jen from The Bombpops‘ debut solo album East Side of Eden is out now. The full album (did I mention it’s of the debut solo variety?) is now streaming (check it out below!), and you can get it on “Desert Blue” colored vinyl here. There was another bad ass color variant, too, but dat one sold out.

Wait just a god damn second… What’s that? another solo album?! Yessir, it’s the 25th anniversary of Mr. T Experience frontman Dr. Frank Portman’s Show Business is My Life and Sounds Rad Records is doing it right with a sick ass reissue. There are two versions, the Sounds Rad exclusive 180g black wax (200 copies) and the retail variant on turquoise colored vinyl (300 copies). Both come housed in a die cut jacket designed by Chris Appelgren of Lookout! Records fame. You can “call dibs” on the 180g black vinyl here.

Here’s a non-solo album! It’s the new EP from Tampa pop-punk band Atomic Treehouse who I’d describe as MxPx meets Screeching Weasel meets Nerf Herder. Overthrow the Captain is another CD infiltrating the Record Radar; we’re really diversifying here, folks! Check that shit out below and go here to pay money for the compact disc (or perhaps the digital download).

Austin, TX pop-punks the Hoaxxers‘ debut EP is out now and our friends at Mom’s Basement Records still a few copies of the ultra limited (square!) lathe cut 7″ available on their store. You might recognize these dudes from other bands such as Breaklights, Dropped Out, Oldie Hawn, and Joe Jitsu. If that’s not ringing a bell, I’ll just say if you like 90’s pop-punk (Lookout!, Mutant Pop, etc.) you gotta check these guys out. Also, check out all the other awesome shit Mom’s Basement just threw up on their store while you’re picking up this 7″. The Yum Yums! The Smugglers! The McRackins! The Manges! Holy fuck!

Lars Frederiksen & The Bastards’ 2001 self-titled debut album has gotten a new pressing from Pirates Press Records, with 1,000 copies on “Bleach Marble” colored vinyl. I’m not entirely sure the demand exists for 1,000 copies of this, considering the 2022 repress on Red & Black Galaxy colored wax is still in print (that one was “limited” to 1,000 copies as well lul). But hey, maybe you’re going for a full set or some shit. Get it here.

The 10th Anniversary edition of A Wilhelm Scream‘s Partycrasher has gotten a 2nd pressing of 500 copies on Silver / White Swirl w/ Splatter colored vinyl. You can get your hands on this one here (US), here (EU), and here (UK).

The Goddamn Gallows‘ 2011 LP 7 Devils has been reissued as a remastered Double LP with 7 bonus live tracks on the second record. You can get it on gold vinyl (not sure how many copies were pressed but it’s almost sold out) and/or black wax right here.

We’ll end this week’s Record Radar on an interesting note, with a new split LP from Montreal ska-punk band Subb and Sainte Catherines frontman Hugo Mudie. Cat Sounds is a tribute to Kim Shattuck, with each party contributing a Muffs cover, in addition to covers of songs by each other. Could I have phrased that any more confusingly? Probably. Anyway, buy the record here. This is the first new thing Subb has released since 2010. Due out June 21st on Thousand Islands Records!

Epitaph Records is stealing the show this week, unleashing snazzy new color variants for like a dozen different records: Bad Religion being the primary beneficiary. Up first is this eye popping EU exclusive multicolor splatter pressing of No Control (limited to 500 copies). As I’m writing this, I’ve realized it’s already sold out… but just look at that shit, it’s beautiful! There’s a new yellow EU Indie variant as well; here’s one of the places you can get that.

Next up in this week’s BR represses is Against the Grain. This is another EU-only pressing, with 500 copies on clear w/ yellow and purple splatter colored vinyl available on Epitaph’s European merch store. There’s also a EU Indie variant for this one, on orange / black marble colored wax – get that here.

And finally we have All Ages, which has also been repressed on two new color variants. Europe gets 500 copies on “bone w/ red & black splatter” colored wax (get it here), while ‘Merica gets 1,000 copies on “buttercream” colored vinyl (get that one here).

More Epitaph stuff! I promise we’ll get to some other labels’ releases at some point on this week’s column. Two NOFX records with European exclusive pressings, the first of which is S&M Airlines. 500 copies of this one on “orange smoke” colored vinyl – get it here.

The other NOFX record getting a new color variant is (the very underrated in my opinion) Pump Up the Valuum. And, once again, this black & white split colored LP is limited to 500 copies, and is only available on Epitaph’s Kings Road EU store.

Alright, it’s almost over! Our last Epitaph release this week is Osker’s Idle Will Kill, back in print for the first time in a long time. There are three color variants – pink w/ black splatter (buy here), Smartpunk Exclusive(!) “hot pink & black smash” (buy here), and Banquet Records exclusive neon pink / black (buy here). And if you wanna save a few bucks, grab the plain ‘ol black LP on Amazon.

Let’s talk about some other things now, shall we? One of my favorite albums of 2023 is NOT’s Stop the World. If you missed out on the sold out first pressing of this record on purple vinyl, good news! It’s getting a second pressing on “ocean blue” colored vinyl (limited to 300 copies). Don’t sleep on this one, get it here (US), here (UK), or here (Japan). Must-have record for Descendents / ALL fans, and enjoyers of great pop-punk in general.

Six years after its initial release, third wave ska-punk veterans Spring Heeled Jack‘s latest album Sound Salvation gets its first-ever vinyl pressing. Asbestos Records doesn’t specify a color variant, but if Discogs is to be believed, this is limited to 500 copies on translucent record colored wax. Get it here. And on a related note, Spring Heeled Jack just released a new single! It’s great a cover of fellow New England ska vets Bim Skala Bim’s “Diggin’ a Hole”. Check it out:

Pridebowl‘s 1997 Where You Put Your Trust LP is back in print for the first time in 25 years! Spain’s La Agonía de Vivir is reissuing the record, with 100 copies on cyan blue colored vinyl and 200 copies on black wax. Our European readers can get both variants here / inhabitants of North America can save some money and get the black wax here.

Captain, We’re Sinking‘s debut album The Future Is Cancelled turns 10 this year so, naturally, a commemorative reissue is in order. 500 copies available on red / blue / yellow tri-color vinyl here. Two bonus tracks! The band will also be playing some full-album shows to celebrate the anniversary.

Look, it’s something other than a reissue! Ska legends Fishbone have announced their new self-titled EP, due out May 26th on Fat Wreck imprint Bottles To The Ground. It was produced by Fat Mike and features most of the band’s original lineup. Pre-order the 12″ EP here.

And last but not least, we have From Down to Dawn, the latest EP from Italy’s Minus Hero, due out June 2nd on Punk Rock Radar, White Russian, and Cat’s Claw Records. Check out the first single “Rosa” below, and get the record here (US), here (EU), here (UK), or here (Italy!).

Kicking off this week’s Record Radar is my least favorite category: shit that’s already sold out! Up first is this 30th Anniversary repress of Lagwagon’s Trashed. This is a new pressing of the 2xLP deluxe reissue from a while back with all the bonus tracks. It sold out in like 24 hours and is long gone, but sometimes people cancel orders, the label finds a box with some extra copies, etc. So if you missed out, there’s still hope. Keep an eye on fatwreck.com to see if any more of these pop back up. btw this is the best song on this album:

Here’s another one that sold out – it’s the very long awaited reissue of Common Rider’s Last Wave Rockers. Back in print for the first time since its original release in 1999, the debut album from the Jesse Michaels x Squirtgun crossover has been remastered by Mass Giorgini and features new cover art. Asian Man pressed 1,000 copies and sold out in a few days but fear not, a second pressing is on the way.

Teenage Bottlerocket’s Tales from Wyoming has been repressed on 300 copies of hot pink vinyl. I’m not sure what the occasion is (the album came out in 2015), but I’m here for it. Go here if you wanna grab a copy of this one.

Prolific punk (and Foo Fighters) drummer Josh Freese’s solo album The Notorious One Man Orgy is getting its first repress in 24 years; they just couldn’t wait another year for it to be a proper anniversary, could they? This will be released on an undisclosed number of blue LPs in March. Get your copy here – looks like they have some copies of the original picture disc release in stock as well, but you can get those for much less on discogs.

Bay Area punk band Hickey has been immortalized with a 3xLP live album box set There’s the Right Way & There’s the Hickey Way. Dead Broke Rekerds has some copies of this in stock, get yours before they’re gone.

Let’s talk about some new releases, shall we? Here’s a brand new Split LP from two up-and-coming UK punk bands Old Chase and The Upshot. Limited to 100 copies on Toxic Pink colored vinyl, you can check out a few tracks from Showtime Split below and grab your copy from Punk Rock Radar (US), Cat’s Claw Records (UK), Fast Decade (EU), or High End Denim (CA).

Montreal melodic punk band The Speakeasy has a brand new record coming very soon. Their self titled debut LP will be released on January 19th through the almighty Thousand Islands Records. Check out one of the singles below and pre-order the record on translucent yellow colored vinyl here – these will start shipping in March.

Last but not least on this week’s installment of the Record Radar, we have the moment you’ve all been waiting for. It’s the highly anticipated 21st variant of the new Green Day album! Limited(!!!) to a paltry 3,350 copies, this one may bear the longest variant name so far – tricolor segmented hot pink, black and white vinyl. That’s 50 characters, folks! Anyway, buy it here, I don’t give a shit.

Oh wait… what’s that? Oh fuck. There’s another one. Green Day – Saviors variant #22! You’d be a damn fool if you didn’t pick up this smokin’ hot, ultra-limited “iHeart Exclusive” white vinyl color variant. I mean, it’s limited to just 1,000 copies – that’s practically nothing! Get it here, sucka.
