Diesel Boy have announced that they have signed to SBAM Records. The band also stated that they will be releasing a new album in the summer of 2023. The band's statement reads in full, "Though 2023 officially marks our 30th year as a band, we haven’t been active in quite some time. But today we are super psyched to announce that after years and years of sitting on our middle-aged asses, we’re back in the garage and prepping a new record. A hearty and grateful thank you to the fine folks at @sbamrocks for bugging the shit out of us the past few years to make this happen! We can't wait for you to hear what we've been up to." Diesel Boy released Rode Hard and Put Away Wet in 2001.

DS Album Review: Diesel Boy – “Gets Old”

Listen, I’ll be upfront. I was ten when Diesel Boy released their last album “Rode Hard and Put Away Wet”, and I initially didn’t hear it until I was 19. So that, for me, made this period of longing for new material a little shorter. I’m 31 now, so the period here isn’t as intense as […]

Listen, I’ll be upfront. I was ten when Diesel Boy released their last album “Rode Hard and Put Away Wet”, and I initially didn’t hear it until I was 19. So that, for me, made this period of longing for new material a little shorter. I’m 31 now, so the period here isn’t as intense as many have waited. But still, like many, I couldn’t help but wonder what had happened to the band. With Gets Old, Diesel Boy are back, and the past 22 years have benefited from their break.

If we look at the opener ‘Lost Decade’, it could come off as the average punk song. But they take the piss out of themselves and give fans a sense of what they’ve been up to since they’ve been gone. Is it a reunion if no one cared we were gone or that we’re back?” and those lyrics are funny.

This quickly became my favourite song. ‘Viking Funeral’ starts with what I imagine is Gjallarhorn, but I’m pretty sure it’s regular horns playing. The lyrics are heavy and could hint towards a break-up that left someone with a heavy heart afterward. ‘Corpse Paint Blues’ is a pretty pop-punk song about some nice coffee shop and dreaming about suburban life. I felt this song was grown up, longing for the earlier years when things seemed simpler. ‘Two Stones’ hits differently. Lyrically it seems somber, and while the rest of the album hasn’t been “light” on the lyrics, to be honest. The guitar solo and the sound overall remind me of an 80s song. Friends, this may very well be one of the nicest album-closers I’ve heard this year.

22 years is what it took for Diesel Boy to return, and I hope they don’t take another 22 years to release a new album. Because this was fun to hear from them, I think it’s a good comeback album, and no matter what they sing in ‘Lost Decade’ I care that they are back! And you should be too! Check out this album; if you’re at Brakrock this week, remember to check them out!

In case you haven’t already heard, SoCal melodic punks Strike Twelve put out a new record earlier this year. It’s called Last Band Standing and it was released by the friendly people at Thousand Islands Records. We, the friendly people of Dying Scene, are simply chuffed to bring you the new music video for “Not a Phase”, which happens to be a song from the aforementioned album. Go ahead and check it out below!

Here are some words an unnamed member of Strike Twelve was nice enough to type for us regarding “Not a Phase” and its accompanying music video:

“The music video is a compilation of archived videos, photos and flyers from our 20+ years as a band. It was painstakingly pieced together by the one and only Felony Ron of Felony Records. We joke around that when people like our wives first met us, they thought the band was a temporary phase. Now, decades later, we’re still going strong. While being in a band has great potential to be disruptive to the rest our lives, it is in fact the glue that holds us together.”

You can get Last Band Standing on colored vinyl here (NA), here (EU), and here (Australia). Strike Twelve will be playing a show in San Diego with Diesel Boy and Versus the World on December 10th; you can get tickets for that here. Fuck yeah.

California punk supergroup Versus The World have a new record coming out this Friday on SBÄM Records, and guess what?! We’re premiering the album’s final single “The Miserable”, right now! Check it out below, along with details on the band’s upcoming tour dates.

Here’s what singer Donald Spence had to say about “The Miserables”, which features guest vocals from Brenna Red of The Last Gang:

“The Miserable was the last thing we did for the record and it felt like a good way to book-end everything.  The lyrics were inspired by the way I had felt about the 14 month lockdown in California.  It starts frantic and dark – the minor chords give a bit of an ominous feeling – but by the last chorus it’s much bigger and brighter.  I took inspiration from Les Miserables, which I have been lucky enough to see a few times, to make the ending feel the way it does.  It was a blast to put all these weird ideas together.”

For the uninitiated, Versus The World’s lineup includes names like Lagwagon guitarist Chris Flippin and Good Riddance drummer Sean Sellers, among others. The band’s new album The Bastards Live Forever releases Friday, May 26th.
