California punk supergroup Versus The World have a new record coming out this Friday on SBÄM Records, and guess what?! We’re premiering the album’s final single “The Miserable”, right now! Check it out below, along with details on the band’s upcoming tour dates.
Here’s what singer Donald Spence had to say about “The Miserables”, which features guest vocals from Brenna Red of The Last Gang:
“The Miserable was the last thing we did for the record and it felt like a good way to book-end everything. The lyrics were inspired by the way I had felt about the 14 month lockdown in California. It starts frantic and dark – the minor chords give a bit of an ominous feeling – but by the last chorus it’s much bigger and brighter. I took inspiration from Les Miserables, which I have been lucky enough to see a few times, to make the ending feel the way it does. It was a blast to put all these weird ideas together.”
For the uninitiated, Versus The World’s lineup includes names like Lagwagon guitarist Chris Flippin and Good Riddance drummer Sean Sellers, among others. The band’s new album The Bastards Live Forever releases Friday, May 26th.

For the first time, Team Dying Scene had two photographers on the ground and in the pits in Chicago for the annual 3-Day Riot Fest. It was a blast to have another great photographer documenting RF. We both have our own perspectives. This is mine for day 1, Friday, September 16, 2022.
On the day 1 train rides to Riot Fest, I queried those headed to Douglass Park about whom they were most looking forward to seeing play. It would have taken several pairs of hands to count how many attendees on the nearly full CTA train cars of the red and pink lines responded with Sincere Engineer. Chicago area’s Deanna Belos, performing under the stage name of Sincere Engineer, has been on a rocket ship to national stardom these past several years. It’s not hard to see why. Sincere Engineer combines infectiously great tunes with a self-effacing wit and an utterly charming stage presence. This was not her Riot Fest debut, but it was her first on one of the event’s main stages. She blasted out a set list including “Trust Me,” “Bottle Lightning Twice,” “Dragged Across The Finish Line” and of course, “Corn Dog Sonnet No.7.” That last song was the inspiration for the “Corn Dog Mosh Pit,” in which participants held up corn dogs as they slammed into each other. Back to those fans on the morning “L” rides headed to Riot Fest? Eager as they headed to Douglass Park and left Riot Fest satisfied. If Belos ever asked “what am I supposed to do now?” I think a good response would be “pretty much whatever you want.”

Carolsdaughter, aka Thea Taylor, from Temecula, CA, is just a couple of months shy of her 18th birthday. However, has already witnessed her song “Violent” featured in over a quarter-million TikToks. Taylor, as Carolsdaughter, has also amassed 882.7K followers on her own TikTok channel. That’s in addition to the 183K followers on her Youtube channel. But the musician/comedian demonstrated that she is no flash-in-the-pan influencer too many often assume of young people with such large social media fan bases. Her performance at Riot Fest proved this. With an appearance recalling Gwen Stefani in her No Doubt days, Carolsdaughter utilized the entire stage, running from one corner to the next, with a few pogo jumps sprinkled in whilst belting out haunting lyrics. This included the aforementioned “Violent”: “don’t make me get violent,
I want my ring back, baby, that’s a diamond,
You don’t listen anyways, I’ll be quiet
I don’t really feel like fighting” was quite captivating.
As accomplished as she is at such a young age, it will be fun keeping an eye out for her future projects. We will be listening.
Boston Manor was founded in March 2013, in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. “Datura,” the band’s latest album is scheduled to be released on October 14, 2022, to critical acclaim. The record has thus far generated three singles, “Foxglove,” “Passenger,” and “Inertia.” As with the past Boston Manor releases, its sound is a fusion of punk, emo, dance, and electronica. The band’s Riot Fest set was intense as demonstrated through “Foxglove,” one of the above-mentioned recently released singles.
There was also a nice touch by guitar player Mikey Cunniff. Cunniff appeared on stage with a sports car yellow guitar emblazoned with Topo Chico branding and wearing a Placebo t-shirt. Placebo, one of the top billed Riot Fest 2022 artists, was forced to pull out of the festival, according to a statement the band put out, “…due to unprecedented visa and logistical issues beyond our control.”
Taking Back Sunday, from my native land of Long Island, was back at Riot Fest after performing at the event in 2021. The band played a solid set much to the appreciation of many fans in the crowd. Those fans eagerly sang along as TBS ran through “Set Phasers to Stun,” “Timberwolves at New Jersey,” “You’re So Last Summer,” and “Flicker, Fader’.”
Taking Back Sunday, a Riot Fest semi-regular, was yet again a reliable part of the event and I’m sure this will be far from its last performance there.
The legendary Descendents kicked off their set with “Everything Sux.” Considering that the festival’s long-time slogan is “Riot Fest Sucks,” this was a great choice. Through nearly 30 songs, the Californians held their fans in sway as crowd surfing fans continually made it to the barricades before being pulled to safety by security personnel. In addition to the opening tune, Descendents also jammed through “I’m Not A Punk,” “I’m the One,” “Coffee Mug,” “When I Get Old,” “Merican,” “My Dad Sucks,” and “I Don’t’ Want to Grow Up.”
Descendents may sing about everything sucking but the band itself has never earned such a description.
San Diego’s Rocket From The Crypt has long been a fan favorite. With all members dressed in matching black attire with white trimmings, the group brought to mind a Mariachi band. Rocket From The Crypt had a common Riot Fest musical assignment: Playing one of its best albums in full, from start to finish. In this case, it was the band’s penultimate album, 2001’s Group Sounds which features the very popular “Savoir Faire,” and also includes “Straight American Slave,” “S.O.S,” “Carne Voodoo.” RFTC also performed “Sturdy Wrists”, “Glazed” and “Don’t Darlene “ from its second album Circa: Now!
Rocket From The Crypt members Speedo, Petey X, ND, Apollo 9, JC 2000, and Ruby Mars provided die-hard fans what they were looking for and it’s hard to imagine they didn’t pick up more than a few new fans in the process.
Yet another great band from California played, Goleta’s Lagwagon. The band’s walk-on music was Theme from “The Warriors” (composed by Barry De Vorzon) and its set sprinkled with humor as frontman Joey Cape led Lagwagon through a set which included “After You My Friend”, “Falling Apart,” “Wind in Your Sail,” “Island of Shame,” “Razor Burn.”
Many fans at the very front wore Lagwagon attire and appeared ecstatic that their time waiting, often crushed up against the metal barricades, paid off with an experience they’ll remember for years.
Chicago’s own Alkaline Trio matched Lagwagon and perhaps even superseded them with choice of walk-on music. This time it was a tune that had stage and security personnel, the fans, and yes even us photographer singing in hearty unison. The tune which provoked this sunshiny moment in the darkness of just past the gloaming? One of the biggest hits by the legends (and Riot Fest alums) from just 85 miles west-northwest past Chicago. Of course the tune was “Surrender” by Cheap Trick. It was glorious.
Once on stage Alkaline Trio blazed through a set which included “Time to Waste,” “Calling all Skeletons,” “Sadie,” “Fatally Yours,” “Bleeder,” and “Radio.”
Matt Skiba, Dan Andriano and Derek Grant also had a couple of dedications to gift.
“How about a love song? How about a love song for Chicago? Tonight. Another one” proposed guitarist/vocalist Skiba as he introduced “Every Thugs Needs a Lady,” on which bassist/vocalist Andriano took the lead vocals. The conclusion of the song led to this delightful (partial) exchange between Skiba and Andriano as drummer Derek Grant sat back took it in:
Skiba “That, that was a 9 and a half.”
Andriano “Thanks buddy… see I’m getting better.”
Skiba: “I would have given you a ten I just don’t want you getting cocky on me right?”
Andriano: “I can’t be reading my clippings” …”…I get a little confidence boost though with that, thank you Matt”
Skiba: “…No problem bro.”
This was immediately followed by Skiba declaring “This song’s for the Descendents, it’s called “Mercy Me.”
Alkaline Trio capped an enjoyable day 1 for Dying Scene correspondents.

This is the weekly column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. After taking a one week hiatus to observe the resurrection of our lord and savior Jesus H Christ, we’re back in action with a ton of awesome colorful plastic music discs on tap. At long last, Blink-182‘s classic live (but not actually live) record The Mark, Tom and Travis Show is back in print! I think it’s been 7 years(?) since this was last repressed. Finally, you can get your hands on this bad boy for less than the $100 it fetches on Discogs. If you wanna grab a copy of this new pressing, this eBay listing looks like the cheapest option.
Also new from Blink this week: Buddha gets its like 30th color variant, thanks to Cleopatra Records. There’s an undisclosed number of copies on Blue w/ Red Splatter colored vinyl (it looks pretty sweet honestly). Get it from the label’s webstore; everything on there is 20% off right now, so this is only like $22.
German skate punk veterans Not Available are getting in on the reissue action, with a new pressing of their 2001 LP V8. They made 99 copies of this new Orange Marbled color variant, get yours here. Very underrated band.
Left Alone‘s debut album Streets of Wilmington is getting a 20th Anniversary reissue! There are 300 copies on Coke Bottle Clear colored vinyl – and 20 test pressings – available here.
The reissue train rolls on! (we’ll get to this week’s new releases soon, I promise). Striped Music has issued a second pressing of the 30th Anniversary Screeching Weasel Anthem For A New Tomorrow reissue. The first pressing on hot pink colored vinyl is long sold out, but now you can get it on blue wax here.
One of the most critically acclaimed releases of 2022, Soul Glo‘s Diaspora Problems, is back in print once again. 500 copies are available on this new Gold / Transparent Green / Pink Split color variant. This LP moves fast (I think this is the sixth pressing in just a year), so act fast and get it here if you want a copy.
Last reissue / repress, I pinky swear! Anywho, Chuck Ragan‘s 2016 solo album The Flame in the Flood is getting repressed. There’s a few variants: “Sunshine” (Canada), “Swamp Green” (US), “Flame” colored, and of course, black wax.
Alright you’ve all been patient, time for some NEW releases! First up is Italian skate punks Wasei, who just put out their awesome new record Vulgar Misplay of Burkett. 100 copies on black wax, 100 copies on colored vinyl. Listen below and grab the LP here.

Teenage Bottlerocket has a new four song 7″ coming soon on Pirates Press Records. There are three color variants: Hot Pink (1,200 copies) and “Evergreen & Blue Jay” (500 copies) are available on the label’s online store. Anywho, it’s a new year and the Record Radar is back in action. So kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time!
Fat Wreck Chords gets us started this week with a new pressing of Joey Cape and Tony Sly‘s 2004 split LP. This has been out of print on colored vinyl for a decade and comes as a welcome surprise to start the new year. Grab a copy here.
A little over a month ago we brought you the news that Houston punk veterans 30footFall had signed to People of Punk Rock Records. The label has since launched pre-orders for first-time vinyl releases of the band’s 2002 album The Doppler Effect and 2003 live record 10yearsandstillFALLING. Here’s another thing we told you about a few weeks ago, but why not mention it again because perhaps it got lost in the shuffle of all the holiday hustle and bustle. NOFX is going full Greatful Dead on us and will be releasing live albums of all 40 stops on their final tour. These will be available for digital download, and on vinyl as 3xLP sets. Pre-orders are now available for the Barcelona and Linz, Austria records.
A few years ago, former Dag Nasty singer Peter Cortner and bassist Doug Carrion started a new band called Field Day (named after one of the two Dag Nasty records the duo performed on). The band’s upcoming LP Acquisition compiles songs from their first few 7″s and also features two brand new tracks. It’s available to pre-order on pink or clear vinyl here.

The foremost punk rock supergroup cover band hit the House of Blues in Chicago, IL on the first day of October 2022. The band brought the humor and fun, performing others’ classics but at break-neck speed.
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes has a rotating cast of characters. At this House of Blues Chicago, only one of the original members, Spike Slawson, was on stage. Joey Cape of Lagwagon and Fat Mike of NOFX were unable to join Slawson due to both bands being on tour. However, Slawson did have a pretty solid set of bandmates: CJ Ramone on bass, Speedo aka John “The Swami” Reis of Rocket From the Crypt on guitar, Jake Kiley from Strung Out, and Andrew “Pinch” Pinching formerly of The Damned, on drums. The entire band was decked out in white denim and glittery pink shirts, accented by white ties Slawson added a white sports jacket and Elton John style specs, as well his Lounge Lizard persona.
The band zoomed through a pair of John Denver tunes, “Leaving on a Jet Plane” and “Take Me Home Country Roads,” as well as Paul Simon’s “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard,” Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up,” “ScienceFiction/Double Feature” by Richard O’Brien
The set also featured Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again,” “Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going to Be a Long, Long Time)” by Elton John, “Mandy,” by Barry Manilow and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes serves up a reliably good time, no matter what the lineup at any given time. It’s all in good fun, though there was an early oof moment when Slawson joked about John Denver’s skills as a helicopter pilot (Denver died when the home-made aircraft he was flying crashed. The National Transportation Safety Board determined the crash to pilot errors). Aside from that, the band members play with an earnestness rather than a mocking spirit underneath the levity. They seem to be enjoying this insouciant break from their “day jobs.” The crowd was all for it and left asking for more.
The Black Tones, on its first national tour, got the show started in a big way. The duo, comprised of Eva Walker on vocals and guitar, and her twin brother Cedric Walker on drums and vocals, have built a devoted fan base in the state of Washington. The Seattle duo’s hit song, “The Key Of Black (They Want Us Dead)” speaks to police brutality fueled by racism.The name of the Walkers’ first album, Cobain & Cornbread, is a nod to both their hometown of the Emerald City, and their family’s southern roots in Louisiana.
On stage, joined by family as back-up musicians and singers they soared. Eva Walker is both an indefatigable shredder and a dynamic vocalist. Cedric Walker is a thunderous drummer, every bash complementing his sister’s swaggering stage presence. With songs like “Mr. Pink,” “Ghetto Spaceship,” and “Mama, There’s A Spider In My Room,” this band will continue to knock the socks off of those lucky enough to see them in the future.
In the middle slot of the evening were the rising stars in Son Rompe Pera. The band, like The Black Tones, is led by siblings. The three brothers Gama: The two Marimberos/Vocalists, Mongo and Kacho, and percussionist/vocalist Kilos. The family is from Naucalpan de Juárezon the outskirts of Mexico City. They are joined in Son Rompe Pera by Raul Albarrán on bass and Albarrán’s cousin, Richi López on drums. The band has played nearly every size of music venue, and was interviewed by National Public Radio. They were also featured in a video for NPR’s Tiny Desk Sessions, On this Windy City Saturday night, Son Rompe Pera buoyantly showcased its sound which is traditional marimba music and cumbia fused with garage punk and psychobilly. Marimberos Kacho’s and Mongo’s synchronized rapid fire banging of their mallets across their marimbas, whilst furiously dancing, building momentum, caused them to appear breathless as they hit the crescendos. Those moments elicited gasps from the crowd followed by roaring cheers. Son Rompe Pera did not just warm up the crowd for the headliners, Instead, it was introducing to many of the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes fans a piece of the members’ heritages and family traditions. In the process, they were also garnering new fans of their music and of the marimba and cumbia.

Kicking things off, New Found Glory! Back in April they released a 20th anniversary reissue of Sticks and Stones. Well, that shit sold out really quick, so they’re doing a second pressing of the reissue, limited to 2,000 copies. Go here this Friday, July 1st at Noon Eastern time to get your hands on it. Or wait ’til they sell out again and pay some clown $100 for it on Discogs.
Bad Religion is also reissuing two of their classic albums. Up first is Generator getting a 30th anniversary reissue. There are different variants for the US, UK, and Australia. Links to order all of those can be found here.
2002’s The Process of Belief is also getting the same reissue treatment for its 20th birthday. This one was announced a few weeks ago but there’s still plenty available. Links to order those are here.
Up next on the reissue train is the best band to name themselves after a Frenzal Rhomb song, Local Resident Failure, with the 10th anniversary reissue of their debut album A Breath of Stale Air. Nitro Records participated in Record Store Day 2022 with a reissue of their classic 1996 comp Go Ahead Punk… Make My Day. The compilation features AFI, The Vandals, Guttermouth, The Offspring and Jughead’s Revenge. 5,000 copies were made, and this is its first release on wax. There are still plenty of these out there. You can even get it on Discogs at a very reasonable price.
Now, here’s something that’s sure to ruffle some feathers: Walmart’s Exclusive pressings of Green Day‘s Dookie, American Idiot, and International Superhits. “Green Day? Walmart? That’s not punk!” No fucking shit, but who really cares? Sure the Waltons are one of the most despised families in America and they don’t need any more of your money, but look at the pretty colors! Help fund Billie Joe’s move to the UK, I’m sure he could really use the money.
The Bouncing Souls‘ self-titled record turns 25 this year, so they’re celebrating with four colorful polyvinyl chloride discs. Links to get all the different variants can be found here. East coast! Fuck you!
More reissues! Keith Morris’ OFF! is offering up new pressings of their back catalog, including the stellar First Four EPs, which is now available as a 12″ LP for the first time. These records kick ass. Buy, buy, buy.
Hey, here’s some new music! Screeching Weasel has a new record coming out on July 15th. It’s called The Awful Disclosures of Screeching Weasel. The LP is pricey at $30, but the two songs Mr. Weasel has put up for streaming have been good (stream below), and I enjoyed their last album a lot. Americans can pre-order here, and Europeans can get it here.
Skate punk veterans Cigar have stepped out of a time machine from 1999 to release their sophomore album. The Visitor is due out on September 9th through Fat Wreck Chords. Colored variants are long sold out, but I urge all self respecting skate punk fans to grab it on black wax here in America, here in Europe, and here in Australia. Listen to the debut single while you order!
1-2-3-4 Go! Records has spent the last year reissuing the entire Pinhead Gunpowder discography. The latest installment includes the Shoot the Moon LP (my personal favorite) and 8 Chords, 328 Words 7″. Everything in this series has been Grade A quality, and these reissues are a lot more affordable than original pressings of these records. You can get your hands on these here.
Pop-punk tastemakers Eccentric Pop Records have a bunch of new stuff up on their webstore. For the ridiculously low price of $16 (seriously Travis, how can you sell shit this cheap?!), you can get your hands on Dan Vapid and the Cheats‘ new LP Escape Velocity (listen below), and a new prepress of Horror Section’s long out of print self-titled record. Support a great label and add some awesome records to your collection!
Here’s a highly recommended pickup for those who worship at the altar of Joey Ramone. The Budweisers are a fantastic pop-punk band from Spain, and their new record Look Out Below is great! Plenty of fan service here for everyone who longs for the days when Lookout! Records ruled the pop-punk universe. Monster Zero has it up for pre-order now.
Target joins the “big box store reissuing classic punk albums” party with an exclusive 40th anniversary pressing of The Clash‘s Combat Rock on red vinyl. I grabbed this from my local Target a few weeks ago, and it sounds fantastic. I even signed up for the Red Card and saved 5% – what a deal! I love this record. “Rock the Casbah” is one of mankind’s greatest achievements. There’s a UK pressing on green vinyl as well – you can get that one here.
And I think that oughta do it! There’s undoubtedly a lot of stuff I missed, but hey, shit happens. The world keeps spinning, and we live to see another day. Hello friends, and welcome back to the Dying Scene Record Radar! In the unlikely case that you missed me last week, I offer my sincere apologies. I was out of town for my birthday so the Record Radar went on a very brief hiatus. Anyway, I’m back and a lot of exciting stuff seems to have happened while I was gone. So this week we’ll be playing a little catch up. Let’s get into it!
DustyWax Records is giving Pulley‘s 60 Cycle Hum a 25th Anniversary reissue. This is the first time this melodic punk classic will be in print since its initial release in 1997. If you live in Canada, you’ll want to pre-order here. For my fellow Americans, Thousand Islands Records still has some copies available on their webstore. And our European friends can get it here.
Anti-Flag‘s The General Strike is getting a 10th Anniversary reissue (how the fuck was 2012 ten years ago?). This is limited to 2,000 copies on red vinyl, with new artwork and two “previously unreleased” tracks. Pre-order yours here.
FACT CHECK: These songs were, in fact, previously released! They were on a digital EP that was given away to attendees of the band’s tour in support of The General Strike. It hurts me to say Anti-Flag is fake news.
Fat Wreck Chords continues their 25th Anniversary reissue series with the Teen Idols‘ self-titled debut LP. Original pressings of this record are very hard to come by; the cheapest on Discogs right now is $72 after shipping. This reissue is on half black/half yellow vinyl, not sure how many copies were made. We’re late to the party and this is sold out in the US and Europe. If you want this slice of 90’s pop-punk perfection, the only place you can still get it is Artist First Australia.
Also from Fat: a new pressing of Dillinger Four‘s Situationist Comedy, I would assume in honor of its 20th Anniversary, though they don’t market it as such. Anywho, this has been out of print for a while, so good news for anyone who’s been wanting it. Head over to their webstore to get your hands on this one.
Leatherface‘s 1993 LP Minx is being reissued on red vinyl. If you reside in the UK, this is probably the cheapest place to get this record. Americans can save about 20 bucks by grabbing it from Amazon.
No Idea Records has repressed A Wilhelm Scream‘s Partycrasher on “kaleidoscope colored vinyl” (whatever the fuck that means). They made 150 copies, each one is unique. This is a great album. Get your copy here.
A bunch of Rancid records are back in print on vinyl for the first time in a while. This includes both of their self-titled albums, …And Out Come the Wolves, Life Won’t Wait, and Indestructible. California melodic punks Craig’s Brother have announced their first new album in 11 years. Easily Won, Rarely Deserved is due out in November on People of Punk Rock Records. Pre-order the record here. The first single will premiere next week, for now you can listen to the band’s latest EP below.
Now that all the new releases and reissues have been covered, here’s what I’ve been listening to! My awesome mom got me a bunch of records for my birthday – The Adolescents‘ self-titled album, The Flatliners‘ Inviting Light (I wasn’t crazy about this record when it first came out, but I’ve listened to it about three times now and I’m really enjoying it), the latest from Joey Cape and Face to Face, and Millencolin‘s True Brew. I also finally got the Walmart Exclusive(!!!) pressings of Green Day‘s American Idiot and International Superhits I ordered a few months ago. I’m still debating whether I want that new blue variant of Dookie.
