DS Band Spotlight: Introducing Baltimore’s Paperback Tragedy

A few months ago, I asked our loyal Facebook followers to recommend lesser known bands (up-and-coming, underrated, or otherwise) for me to check out. Today’s Band Spotlight highlights one of the best bands I came across amongst the hundreds that were recommended. For those who find themselves on the eternal quest to find a modern […]

A few months ago, I asked our loyal Facebook followers to recommend lesser known bands (up-and-coming, underrated, or otherwise) for me to check out. Today’s Band Spotlight highlights one of the best bands I came across amongst the hundreds that were recommended. For those who find themselves on the eternal quest to find a modern punk band that perfectly recreates that classic 90’s Epifat skate punk sound, look no further than Baltimore’s Paperback Tragedy. These guys have been around since 2006 but they’ve somehow flown under Dying Scene’s radar the entire time, but that ends today! Check out their excellent new album Threeshe! below and hit up their Bandcamp for more.

Happy Wednesday, comrades! We’ve got a pretty cool split 12″ to debut for you this fine January day, courtesy of your friends (and ours!) at Hex Records! It’s the latest in a series of Hex Records splits that pair up bands that aren’t necessarily directly part of the label but that are pretty awesome and exciting nonetheless. Today’s installment is probably the best one yet!

First up is Brain Cave, the Cleveland-based post-hardcore trio. Their sound is described as “blurring the line between all-out aggression and a dedication to songcraft, melody, and riffs.” Their four tracks are backed by four more from Baltimore’s own Knub. Seriously, this is one for those of you who dig that 90’s noise rock sound. Mind you, the vinyl is a pretty cool clear/rainbow-splatter deal. You can order your very own copy here, and check out the full split below, a full two days before the 1/20/23 release date!

We’re starting off with the hardcore punk band War on Women. This female-fronted band delves heavily into political and feminist issues. Shawna Potter is the very definition of fierce; definitely see this band live if you get the chance…and, head’s up they will be touring with fellow hardcore punk band Cancer Bats this fall for an East Coast U.S. tour.

Next are The Front Bottoms, an emo/indie rock band from New Jersey. They released their third installment of their popular Grandma EP series titled Theresa on September 2, 2022.

Long-time emo band Sunny Day Real Estate made a stop at Riot Fest for their fourth reunion tour. Their 1994 debut studio album Diary has been considered one of the defining albums of the Midwest emo genre.
