Hello, and welcome to the latest installment of the Dying Scene Record Radar! If it’s your first time joining us, thank you! This is a weekly column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl. So kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, grab a few beers, and break out those wallets, because it’s time to run through this week’s new releases and reissues. Let’s get into it!

Pulley‘s 1999 self-titled record got reissued a few years ago by Spanish indie label La Agonía de Vivir. It was limited to 500 copies, and it sold out pretty fuckin’ quick. Good news! If you missed out on the first run, they’ve repressed the record once again, with 200 copies on grey colored vinyl, and 300 on black vinyl. Go here to grab it, or don’t and regret it forever (or until they repress it again).

Up next is yet another classic skate punk reissue from La Agonía de Vivir: Adhesive‘s 1996 ripper Sideburner. Like the Pulley record, this is the second run of these, and it’s also on 500 copies (200 “milky clear”, and 300 on black vinyl). Get your copy here.

The Clash‘s iconic self-titled debut album is getting repressed on some purdy hot pink wax in honor of “National Album Day”. This is the first time I’ve been alerted to this holiday’s existence, I guess it’s some Bri’ish thing, innit? Amazon seems to be the cheapest place to get this one, and even then it’ll cost you 40 god damn freedom dollars!

Sorry if I sound like a broken record complaining about prices, but holy fuck! The thousand dollar tickets to Blink-182‘s upcoming “reunion tour” aren’t the only thing that’s pricey. Their new record – their first with Tom DeLonge since 2011’s Neighborhoods – is $37 fucking dollars!!! Holy Christ my brothers. Check out the first single below (it blows ass in my humble opinion, but you’re free to form your own opinion), and buy the record here if you want.

In case you didn’t know, Green Day‘s Nimrod is another record that turns 25 years old this year! They’re going all out for the album’s birthday, with a 5xLP box set featuring previously unreleased demos (check one out below!) and a live album recorded on their 1997 tour in support of Nimrod (there’s a poster and some other shit, too). Save some money by grabbing this one from our friends at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records – they have free shipping on orders over $75 and this box set clears that hurdle by a fair margin. Get it here.

Masked Intruder‘s sophomore album M.I. is back in print on colored vinyl thanks to the good people at Fat Wreck Chords. What color? I have no clue! The people at Fat are a secretive bunch. But hey, if you want this, or your a collector nerd and want the new variant regardless, you can acquire it here.

Also from Fat: Cobra Skulls‘ last 7″ Eagle Eyes is 10 years old, and the band is kinda back in action, so they reissued it as a 12″ EP with some bonus tracks. They did reveal the color for this one, and boy is it a sight for sore eyes. Buy it here (US), here (EU), or here (Down Under).

Lavasocks Records is releasing Canadian party punk folk heroes The Smugglers‘ 1993 album In the Hall of Fame on vinyl for the very first time! Grab your copy of the 2xLP on gold colored vinyl here.

Millencolin‘s Life on a Plate is back in print for the first time in a few years, with two brand new colors of wax. Newbury Comics has a cool “orange and cloudy clear” variant that you can get here, while Brooklyn Vegan has it on red vinyl which you can buy here.

While you’re visiting Newbury Comics to grab that Millencolin record, perhaps you’d like to get this new pressing of Bad Religion‘s latest record? This exclusive blue variant of Age of Unreason is available here. It’s limited to 500 copies.

Speaking of retailer exclusive variants (who came up with that idea anyway?), my fellow Central Floridians at Smartpunk have some super exclusive, limited pressings of two Interrupters records: Say it Out Loud and Fight the Good Fight. Very nice! You can get these here.

Here’s an upcoming release I’m personally very excited about. It’s an LP from Wrong Life featuring their first two EPs and some new bonus tracks. If you’re unfamiliar, this is former Murderburgers frontman Fraser’s current project (they were included in our Ten Underrated Bands feature a few months ago!). I highly recommend giving this a listen below, and grabbing the LP here (US), or here (EU).

Remember last week when we brought you the breaking news(!!!) that NOFX‘s So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes had a 25th Anniversary reissue on the way? Of course you do! Anyway, Epitaph still hasn’t officially announced this thing, but it seems a few retailers have jumped the gun and launched their pre-orders early. Loud Pizza Records has the US indie exclusive “Neapolitan Striped” variant listed on their webstore, and Danish retailer imusic.co has a brown color variant on their online store. Stay tuned for more!

RECORD OF THE WEEK!

We here at Dying Scene are all about trying new things, so this week I’m challenging you, loyal reader, to listen to something new! Or, in this case, something kinda old that is likely new to you! This week’s Record of the Week comes from my favorite hometown ska band Victims of Circumstance. These guys have released many albums – five to be exact – but 2011’s Acupunkture is the only one to receive a vinyl release. Coincidentally, this is also one of my all-time favorite ska-punk albums (it’s right up there with Less Than Jake‘s Losing Streak), and for the asking price of just $12 it’s a fucking steal. Buy this record!!!

So kick off your shoes, grab a few beers, and break out those wallets, because it’s time to run through this week’s new releases and reissues. Let’s get into it!

We’re getting out the gate fast this week, folks! Epitaph has been on a tear lately with reissues of their classic releases, and I have it on good authority that next in line is NOFX‘s So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes. Pictured to the left (or above if you’re on mobile) are two color variants of this 25th Anniversary reissue. This is not available yet, but when it is, you’ll be able to find links to buy all the variants here. Keep an eye out! This record sells out quickly every time it’s repressed.

After being out of print for nearly a decade, The Slackers‘ fourth album Wasted Days is getting reissued by the good people at Pirates Press Records. Older pressings of this record are very hard to come by (currently there is one copy available on Discogs for $135!). Head over here to grab this new 2xLP reissue for the reasonable price of $27.

I’m not a big fan of the newer style of pop-punk played by bands like The Story So Far, but I’ll make an exception for these guys. Cleveland’s Normy takes that sound and kicks it up a notch with more speed and aggression. Their debut EP What on God’s Green Earth? has been available to stream for a few months, but its physical release is still forthcoming. Check it out below, and pre-order the 7″ here.

My Chemical Romance has new Walmart Exclusive(!!!) pressings of three records on the way. The Black Parade, Danger Days, and their “greatest hits” album May Death Never Stop You are getting new color variants, available only at Wally World! Head over here if that’s something you’d like to spend your hard earned money on.

Thrice‘s The Illusion Of Safety is getting a 20th Anniversary reissue. There are literally fuckin 12 variants of this thing (not exaggerating, check Discogs if you don’t believe me) and it’s not due out til March, 2023. Here are a few links to where you can pre-order some of the many variants: Zia Records, Brooklyn Vegan, Smartpunk, Bandbox.

Fat Wreck Chords continues flexing the might of their back catalog with yet another 25th Anniversary reissue. The classic Fat Music Vol. III: Physical Fatness is back in print for the first time since 1997! Grab your copy here (US), here (EU), or here (AUS).

Also from Fat: a surprise repressing of Tony Sly‘s fantastic solo debut 12 Song Program. This is on red and white marble colored vinyl. Not sure how many copies, but I’m sure they’ll go quick! Pick it up here.

Radiation Records has two brand new reissues on tap for my fellow pop-punk aficionados. Up first is the 1993 debut album from Vancouver, BC’s BUM. Give it a listen below, and grab the record on blue vinyl here. Next up is fellow Vancouverites the McRackins‘ with Bat Out of Shell making its vinyl debut after being previously released on CD in 2006 (it also has some awesome new cover art). Stream a few songs below, and go here to get a copy on egg colored vinyl. Both of these are limited to 500 copies and are due out in early November.

The Gaslight Anthem‘s 2008 LP The ’59 Sound is next in line on the reissue train. Bandbox has not one, but two exclusive new variants of this record. I believe there are 1,000 copies of each. Buy it here if you can stomach the $40 price tag for a single LP (yikes).

French punks The Dead Krazukies‘ 2016 debut EP The Northern Belle is getting released on vinyl for the first time, thanks to SBÄM and Sound Speed Records. There are two beautiful color variants, limited to 250 copies each, and it features their cover of Bad Religion‘s “Sinister Rouge” as a bonus track. Grab it here (US) or here (EU).

Newbury Comics has a new exclusive pressing of Hot Water Music‘s Caution, which I just realized turns 20 years old this month! 500 copies on blue vinyl (don’t be surprised if more variants of this one pop up elsewhere). Get yours here.

Sell the Heart Records is releasing a Fest 20 compilation featuring Cobra Skulls, Tsunami Bomb, the Jukebox Romantics, and a bunch of other bands playing The Fest in Gainevsille, FL later this month. The LP is limited to 230 copies, and will be available through the label’s Bandcamp page Friday, October 7th. Proceeds benefit Feed the Scene.

Last but certainly not least, I wanna give a shoutout to our friends at Thousand Islands Records. They’re having a month long sale, and you can get 20% off everything in their webstore! Dying Scene Revisits: Ten of Fat Wreck Chords’ Most Overlooked Releases

Few names loom larger in punk rock lore than Fat Wreck Chords. Started in 1990 by NOFX frontman “Fat” Mike Burkett, the label has stood tall as a bastion of independent punk music for over 30 years. Fat has been home to countless great bands; No Use For A Name, Lagwagon, Strung Out, Good Riddance… the list goes on. If you’re like me, a good chunk of your record collection is stamped with their iconic logo, like a punk rock Nintendo Seal of Quality. Today, we’ll be discussing some of the less heralded entries in the label’s extensive catalog. Come along for a magical journey as we dive into Fat Wreck’s most overlooked releases.

Zero Down – With a Lifetime to Pay

The name Jim Cherry is synonymous with Fat Wreck Chords for me. In addition to being a bass virtuoso, the man was one hell of a songwriter. He played an integral role in Strung Out’s success, with writing credits on classics like “Bring Out Your Dead”, “Firecracker”, and “Mind of My Own”, just to name a few. Then, of course, there’s his contributions to Pulley. Prior to his untimely passing, Cherry started a new band called Zero Down. Their lone album With a Lifetime to Pay is criminally underrated. This is essential listening for all skate punk fans. Zero skippable tracks on this one.

The Loved Ones – Build and Burn

Alright, this one might be a somewhat controversial pick; not because this is a bad album or anything, but I think Keep Your Heart is generally considered The Loved Ones‘ “best” record. But you know what? I don’t give a fuck, I think Build and Burn is better. I couldn’t get enough of this album when it came out. Many regard the mid to late 2000’s as Fat’s “lean years”, but they put out a lot of good shit that didn’t have the typical “Fat sound” during this period. There isn’t a bad song to be found on Build and Burn. The first three tracks alone are worth the price of admission. Everything else is icing on this Philly pop-punk cake.

Limp – Guitarded

Limp was a pretty short lived pop-punk band that released three records through Fat Wreck imprint Honest Don’s Records. Music critic types lazily painted these guys into a corner as a Green Day or Blink-182 imitation. I personally don’t think Limp sounds anything like either of those bands. Their sophomore effort Guitarded is a mostly midtempo pop-punk record with a little ska sprinkled on top. More than anything else, this album is melodic to a fault. “Decision”, “Ten Minutes”, and “Entertainer” are my favorite songs.

Cobra Skulls – Bringing the War Home

Now, I already know what you’re thinking: “Really dude, you’re including a fuckin’ EP in this list?”. Yes, yes I am. Cobra Skulls released two killer albums on Red Scare and were quickly snatched up by Fat Wreck. They made their Fat debut with 2011’s Bringing the War Home and immediately went out on tour with NOFX and the Bouncing Souls (yours truly saw them in Orlando). For many (myself included), this was their introduction to Cobra Skulls, and the band capitalized on that opportunity in a big way. Bringing the War Home provides the perfect bite sized snapshot of a band that was firing on all cylinders. The Bad Religion cover is pretty good, too.

Only Crime – Virulence

Fat Mike and Floyd used to host a podcast where they played songs off the label’s new releases at the time. I was introduced to Only Crime for the first time when they played “Eyes of the World” off their record Virulence. I was blown away, and instantly ordered the CD. Only Crime is one of the greatest punk “super groups” ever as far as I’m concerned. You’ve got Russ Rankin on vocals and Bill Stevenson absolutely killing it on drums, that’s all you need to know. This whole record kicks ass.

American Steel – Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts

A cornerstone of the Lookout! Records roster in the late 90’s, American Steel made a strong impression with the chaotic energy of their 1999 LP Rouge’s March. Over time, the East Bay punk band’s sound mellowed out quite a bit, culminating in 2009’s Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts. This record is full of great midtempo punk-ish rock songs with big choruses that invite you to sing along – the album opener “Emergency House Party” being a prime example. Other highlights include “Your Ass Ain’t Laughing Now”, “Bergamot”, and “Meals and Entertainment”. This isn’t the best American Steel’s discography has to offer, but it’s a fun listen nonetheless.

Big in Japan – Destroy the New Rock

Hailing from Reno, Nevada and featuring members of Zoinks! and The Gain, Big in Japan made their debut in 2001 with Destroy the New Rock. This power-pop punk gem is buried deep in the Honest Don’s catalog, which sucks because it is fantastic! The songs are catchy and the production is stellar, but that’s no surprise considering this was recorded with Mass Giorgini at Sonic Iguana. This record sounds like a mix of Squirtgun and Green Day. Highly recommended listening.

Swingin’ Utters – Here, Under Protest

Call it a comeback! After going eight years without releasing a new record, Fat mainstays Swingin’ Utters made their triumphant return in 2011 with Here, Under Protest. They had a new guitarist in Jack Dalrymple (One Man Army, Dead to Me), and a slightly more polished, melodic approach. Singer Johnny Peebucks’ voice lent itself nicely to the band’s renewed sound. Standout tracks include “Brand New Lungs”, “Kick it Over”, “Heavy Head”, and the album closer “Effortless Amnesiac”, on which Dalrymple takes the lead on vocals.

Love Equals Death – Nightmerica

If you’re a fan of anything AFI did before Sing the Sorrow, you will probably like Love Equals Death‘s Nightmerica. I won’t say frontman Chon Travis sounds exactly like Davey Havok, but at certain points on this album the resemblance is almost uncanny. “Bombs over Brooklyn”, “When We Fall”, “Voice of Change”, and “Numb” offer up a high energy blend of AFI and Pennywise. “Pray for Me” is a kinda corny, on-the-nose love song but in a charming way. “The Broadcast” is complete with all the George Dubya soundbites you’d expect from a mid 2000’s punk song. This whole album holds a special place in my heart, but “Sonora” is by far my favorite track on Nightmerica.

Teen Idols – Full Leather Jacket

The undisputed champions of Ramonescore, Teen Idols mastered their formula and stuck to it. Of their three albums on Honest Don’s, Full Leather Jacket is the one I find myself returning to most often. This is a quintessential pop-punk record. Absolutely zero duds to be found here, every song is great. And with Mass Giorgini at the controls you know the production is top notch. Big shoutout to whoever sequenced this album; “The Team” is a perfect closing track.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk! I’m certain I pissed at least a few of you off for one reason or another. But hey, that’s to be expected when treading on sacred ground. If I introduced you to an album you’ve never listened to, or just gave you the little nudge you needed to check out something you passed on when it first came out, then I’d say my mission has been accomplished. Fat Wreck Chords has been a big part of my life for a long time now. They’ve introduced me to some of my favorite bands and records, and I’m sure a lot of you can say the same. Here’s to another 30 years of awesome music!

  1. Diesel Boy’s Cock Rock. they used to play “Titty Twister” sporadically on an old college Station. Great Album all the way through with “Saving the World” as the other stand out single.
