“EAST BAY: By the Punx, For the Punx, About the Punx” documentary in the works

Green Day is currently directing and producing a documentary about the punk scene in East Bay between the years of 1980 and 1994. “In the mid 1980s, on the eastern shores of the San Francisco Bay, a fuse was lit. Green Day is currently directing and producing a documentary about the punk scene in East Bay between the years of 1980 and 1994.

“In the mid 1980s, on the eastern shores of the San Francisco Bay, a fuse was lit. As the shadows of the 1960s counterculture gave way to the Reagan 80s, disillusioned kids growing up in Berkeley and its surrounding suburbs discovered punk rock… and each other. Together, with amplifiers, copy machines and hearts blazing, they fought to carve out a movement of their own, and changed music, art and literature forever.

EAST BAY: By the Punx, For the Punx, About the Punx is the story of how the East Bay’s unique and thoughtful style of punk rock arose, sending out ripples from the incredibly diverse community of misfits that banded together around Berkeley’s 924 Gilman. Today, the world at large knows about some of the bands who emerged from this scene like Green Day, Rancid & AFI, but their success is just the tip of the iceberg; the roots of this inspiring story go deep into the underground.”

The people working on the project are looking for video footage, flyers, and photos from the time to feature in the documentary. You can find more details on the project and how to submit material here.

Founding Dead Kennedys guitarist East Bay Ray needs your help!

As followers of the legendary band are no doubt aware, Ray ran into some medical issues last year. Specifically, he had been left unable to play guitar after developing carpal tunnel syndrome in his wrist and De Quervain syndrome in his thumb. An operation performed last month will hopefully alleviate both problems and allow Ray to pick up the guitar again in the future…but it also cost a lot of money.

To help defray the medical bills associated with the operation, Ray has launched an Indiegogo campaign. Contributors to the campaign will be eligible for a series of cool perks, including new music from Ray, autographed albums, merch, and future meet-and-greets. Click here to check it out.

Get well soon, Ray!
