10 Songs That Made Me Fall In Love With Punk – Still Rings True

We recently caught up with New York punk act Still Rings True to get their take on the songs that got them in to punk rock.  Check out their list here.

1. NOFX- “It’s My Job To Keep Punk Rock Elite”

NOFX were my first love affair with fast melodic punk rock. This song ripped back then. Lyrically, it’s more relevant than ever.

 2. BLACK FLAG – “Rise Above”

Black Flag didn’t back down to anything, and this song pretty much says it all. Not only did they write some of my all time favorite hardcore songs, they also helped create the DIY scene that we still function in today.

 3. RANCID – “Maxwell’s Murder”

The way Rancid melted punk rock, ska, and reggae all in to one sound blew my mind. This record is to this day my favorite Rancid record, and maxwell’s murder is the raddest song to open it with. The bass line just kills it in this song.

 4. PROPAGANDHI- “Nation States”

“Propagandhi is pretty much our collective all time favorite band, period. They’re records are constantly playing, and they are a huge inspiration to us not only as a band, but as people. This song pretty much set the tone for what I wanted to be a part of musically, and the lyrics are sharp and powerful. Music with a real message.”

5. MINOR THREAT – “In My Eyes”

From the gnarly intro, to the down-stroke bass line, to the intense ass lyrics, this song is just straight power. Ian MacKaye was an animal on stage, and is a super smart dude. Minor Threat were another one of those bands that we can all thank for helping pave the way to where we are today.

6. STRIKE ANYWHERE – “Infrared”

Exit English is an amazing record, and this song seriously hits. I loved the way they fused screaming heavy shit with melodic anthemy type chorus’. Still to this day one of our favorite bands to rock out to.

 7. THE CLASH- Guns Of Brixton

The Clash were and are one of the most important punk rock bands to ever grace this rock. Straight up. Some of the best music ever written, and they were fighting the good fight. This song was one of my first exposures to their music, and I’ll keep listening to it for the rest of my life.

8. BAD BRAINS – “Attitude”

We got that PMA. What more do I need to say? These dudes changed the face of punk rock, and were legit next level musicians. They were beyond their time.

9. AGNOSTIC FRONT-  “Gotta Go”

True sounds of the revolution baby. Agnostic Front showed me what hardcore and punk rock are all about. This song is literally like a soundtrack to our lives. We need this urgency back in our scene today.

10. SUICIDAL TENDENCIES – “Institutionalized”

This song, in my opinion, is one of the most intense critiques of the establishment and the norm that I’ve ever heard in music. I’ll remember every word of this song till the day I die. I remember first hearing this song, and the relief of knowing I wasn’t alone.
