Random Cover Song: AFI – “Today’s Lesson” (Filth Cover)

Cover songs are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. We here at Dying Scene love hearing punk bands do their own take on other band’s songs. Sometimes they pull off amazing interpretations of old classics, sometimes they’re not much more than humble tributes to a fellow artist, and other times they’re just downright laughable renditions of otherwise great songs. Good or bad. Intriguing or mundane. We’ll let you be the judge.

Today’s cover comes from punk-turned-goth-turned-industrial pop (/whatever) group, AFI covering “Today’s Lesson” written by East Bay hardcore originators Filth. The original version of the song appeared Filth’s 1990 EP Live the Chaos before being compiled as a part of the 2008 pressing of The Shit Split (co-released with Blatz). AFI’s cover was released in 1997 on their third album, Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes.

You can listen to both the original and the cover below.

BONUS VIDEO: Did you know AFI will still play their cover live? Because I sure didn’t until today. Here’s a recording of it from the Burials Tour in 2013:
