In case you’ve been living under a rock this week, Against Me! lead singer/guitarist Tom Gabel recently came out as transgendered and has opened up about her life experiences with gender dysphoria and identity confusion. You can read the full interview with Gabel (who plans to be known as Laura Jane Grace) in this week’s issue of Rolling Stone magazine.
This has caused many fans to take a harder look at some of the band’s lyrics, especially songs like “The Ocean” off of 2007’s New Wave and “Searching For A Former Clarity” from the album of the same name. Here’s a video of Lawrence Arms frontman Brendan Kelly addressing that topic with Gabel and lead guitarist James Bowman in a 2010 interview, a few weeks after the release of their album White Crosses.
