Here’s a slow jam for all you starry-eyed young scenesters. A Page Unturned are a talented trio of L.A. up-and-comers featuring Japanese implant, Yoshihiro Imae on guitar and keys, bringing some interesting Reggie and the Full Effect type melodies. He’s come together with bass player/lead vocalist Damon Porras, showcasing in harmony and disposition, and an all-out synchronous Ryan Sebold on drums providing the beat. You can catch them playing shows around southern Cali, or carrying-on their rawkin’ shade of pop punk back home to Japan. They even opened for Unwritten Law last October. (RAD!)

Today, they are self-releasing “One Light”, the band’s second single follow-up to their self-titled debut 3-track EP. (All of which are available here.) This one’s not so hectic, but I dare say the energy is still in it. Give it a listen below. I bet it’ll suck you in. Enjoy!

Los Angeles has a new Oi band Vis Vires, which features members of The Templars, The Hardknocks, and Bovver Wonderland. The Wolves may be their debut four track EP, but they are no rookies and this album full of hardcore street punk anthems, will commandeer your attention.

The EP opens with marching drums before giving away to soaring guitars, while the lyrics build up an us-against-them attitude, as “Witch Hunt” sets the table for all the threats and injustice that face us. Where the next song “Wolves” gives us that hardcore ideology that we are in this together and our unity can ‘destroy the betrayers’ that were defined in the first song. Next up is “Vengeance” a not-so-gentle reminder that perhaps we should not betray their trust. A burner of a tune dripping with rage and showcasing a face-melting guitar solo.

The Wolves ends with a more melodic tune, “This is the End” tones down the hardcore elements and gives their street punk side a little more room to breathe. The subtle change of pace really makes this song standout on the album. It still oozes with anger but really showcases their musicianship, as each band member is given a chance to shine. From the opening drum and bass lines to the swelling guitar work punctuated by a gang chorus, this song draws you into the wolfpack and makes you want to join the fight.

While Vis Vires may not be as frantically charged as Bovver Wonderland or have the same garage buzz as the Templars, they are carving their own niche into the oi scene with a high quality blend of hardcore and street punk. If you are a fan of anthemic, tough as nails music that features soaring guitars overlayed on surgically precise drumming, Vis Vires has something you might want to check out.

4/5 Stars

Occasionally, I’ll find a band that speaks to my soul in a very serendipitous way. A lot of times, this happens because I’m going through some emotional turbulence or traveling a lot for work. I’ve been realizing a lot of the music I listen to is topically similar and aesthetically repetitive. Feeling a certain way in the era of #MeToo and the pain felt coming in on the coat tails of the Brett Kavanaugh hearings and all of the fallout after, I finally found a band that’s really out there punching back. I’m a little late to this party, but just I found The Sonder Bombs. Let me tell you, this band is it, sis. Their latest album came out in October called Modern Female Rockstar, and it is everything and then some ukulele. Not to mention Willow Hawks has the voice of the punk rock angel of my dreams.

This band is incredibly honest and relatable because of the content of their songs. I don’t think I’ve come across a band that takes some fairly serious topics every woman encounters and makes those moments a source of power quite like The Sonder Bombs do. Covering important topics like the power and consequences of coming into female sexuality and having to work harder in male dominated industry. To me, this content is very real, at times painful, and truly appreciated. “I don’t want to be your merch girl, I want to be your god damn idol”, girl same. If the future really is female, I cannot wait to see where this band goes. Check them out below.
