NOFX frontman Fat Mike and Get Dead singer Sam King’s genre-bending supergroup Codefendants have announced their debut album This is Crimewave. The LP is set to release on March 24th through the recently launched Fat Wreck Chords imprint Bottles To The Ground.

They just released a music video for the latest single “Def Cons” and announced a spring US tour. Check all that out below and pre-order the record here.

This is Crime Wave features guest appearances from legendary rapper The D.O.C, as well as Stacey Dee of Bad Cop / Bad Cop and Seattle’s Onry Ozzborn. Four of the album’s 10 tracks have been released as part of an ongoing episodic music video series.

Gainesville ska-punk veterans Less Than Jake have announced a US tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of their 1997 album Hello Rockview. The Welcome to Rockview Tour runs from early July through the end of August and features support from Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Toasters, Spring Heeled Jack and the Venomous Pinks, among others. LTJ will be playing Hello Rockview in its entirety every night.

Located along the banks of the Mystic River, maybe a half-dozen miles north of the ever-increasingly gentrified heart of Boston, Massachusetts, lies the traditionally working-class city of Medford. Once the home of Amelia Earhart and Elizabeth “The Black Dahlia” Short and the guy who wrote “Jingle Bells,” it’s now the home to one of yours truly’s favorite new venues…Deep Cuts! Once the site of one of the region’s 729,038 Italian restaurants, it’s now an ever-evolving sandwich shop/brewery/record shop/pinball arcade/240-cap music venue, the likes of which the area so desperately needed after the shuttering of so many similarly sized venues in the big city. It was the perfect sort of venue for a high-octane three-band-bill as The Drowns brought their rock-and-roll roadshow through the area last Wednesday night, with regional support from Worcester’s Michael Kane and the Morning Afters and newly-reformed River City Rebels, who I suppose hail from parts all-over at this point given the number of moving parts who have spent time in RCR over the last couple of decades.


I’ve been a fan of the hard-working, blue-collar Drowns since one of those first flexis showed up in a care package from the inimitable Pirates Press probably 4/5 years ago. I think it was “The Sound” maybe, and it was printed on an old shot of Kingdome-era Seattle and it was just another example of one of the endlessly creative things that label spits out. ANYWAY, this somehow marked the first time I’d seen them in this neck of the woods, and let me tell you…I liked them before, but I love them now. The Drowns are solid on record, but Rev and the gang (stalwarts Andy Wylie on bass and Jake Margolis – who I had last seen with the Shell Corporation easily a decade ago – now joined by Josh Dale on 2nd guitar) are at their best on a live stage. They are consummate road dogs, and they are dyed-in-the-Fred-Perry unapologetic anti-fascist, anti-racist punk rock lifers. On this night, they blazed through a set that peppered a healthy dose of tracks from their latest record, Blacked Out, with a bunch of the classics. Personal favorites included “Ketamine & Cola,” “Just The Way She Goes,” and the new album’s title track. Also thrown in for good measure were a rousing cover of The Sweet’s “The Ballroom Blitz” – which is a song I’m old enough to remember, and a pit-inducing cover of Cock Sparrer’s “Riot Squad” that brought festivities to a rousing conclusion.


Michael Kane & The Morning Afters opened about a week’s worth of The Drowns’ northeast dates, including this one (naturally). They might not play 200 dates a year like The Drowns do, but in many ways, the two bands are very much kindred rock-and-roll spirits. Appearing as a keyboardless four-piece on this run, Kane and his longtime wingmen Franklin Siplas (guitar), Timmy Weagle (bass) and Jeff Hoey (drums) have carved out a pretty solid Petty-meets-Replacements niche for themselves, meaning they are right at home on a wide variety of bills. The setlist on this particular night was pretty raw and rocking, including “Carol Kaye” and “Cooking The Books” and personal favorite “Dark Nights,” all from their last full length, Broke But Not Broken. Oh, and of course there was a cover of Petty’s “American Girl” that was pretty true to the original, killer guitar solo included. I just wish Franklin had busted out the Yamaha Revstar!


The opening slot on this night was occupied by none other than the River City Rebels. Originally from Vermont (I think), the band have taken on a few different iterations with more than a handful of different members in between hiatuses over the years; Dying Scene’s own Dan McCool even did a stint back around the turn of the century. There was a sort of ska-punk era and there was a more rockabilly era in there. The current era of River City Rebels consists of Dan O’ Day at the helm with Marc Coutu and Izze De Simone on guitar, Kody Samborn on bass and Adam Allard on drums, and they’ve locked in on a more late-70s, Lower East Side, New York Dolls sort of vibe, only if New York Dolls also grew up on 80s Boston street punk.


All in all, it was the kind of raw and fun and working class rock and roll party that I’ve often lamented doesn’t really exist in this capacity and in this area anymore. And maybe it still doesn’t down the road in the “big city.” But it certainly does in places like Deep Cuts in Medford. Bonus points for me not even having to take the highway. Greetings, and welcome to the Dying Scene Record Radar. If it’s your first time here, thank you for joining us! This is the weekly* column where we cover all things punk rock vinyl; new releases, reissues… you name it, we’ve probably got it. For the second week in a row, we’ve got an absolutely massive column, featuring nearly 20 records that got announced this week! So kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, crack open a cold one, and break out those wallets, because it’s go time. Let’s get into it!

One of my favorite records of 2023, Italian skate punks Wasei‘s new album Vulgar Misplay of Burkett, is now available in the US! Head over to Punk Rock Radar’s webstore to grab this ripper on pink vinyl, along with other awesome releases from Clayface, Baxter, Weekend Cigarettes & more.

This project was announced months ago, but now it’s available on vinyl! Fat Mike Gets Strung Out is a collection of songs Mr. Burkett has written (for NOFX and otherwise), which have been reimagined as orchestral pieces. If that’s something you feel like you need in your life, get the record here. Standalone colored vinyl sold out, but you can still get it on black wax (or fork over for one of the bundles with a colored LP and shirt).

Australian punks Clowns have a new album on the way! It’s called Endless, and it’s due out October 20th on Fat Wreck Chords. On the vinyl side of things, there are a ton of color variants for this thing – at least 9 that I’m aware of. Pre-order the record here (US), here (EU, pink), here (EU, green w/ white & silver splater), or here (AUS). There will be a ton of indie variants as well, so check with your local record store on those.

New Jersey’s Joker’s Republic released one of my favorite ska-punk albums last year, but until now it was only available on CD. The band has joined forces with Ska Punk International to give Necessary Evil the vinyl release it deserves. This album was recorded and produced by Less Than Jake’s Roger Lima at The Moathouse. Read my review here, check out one of the tracks below, and get it on “mystery colored vinyl” here.

Long running German street punk band Stomper 98 have announced their new self-titled album, due out September 1st. It’s the band’s seventh LP in their 25 year career, and the second to feature Rancid‘s Lars Frederiksen on guitar. Check out the music video for lead single “Alex – Schatten der Nacht” below and pre-order the record here.

Cleveland pop-punks Normy follow up their 2022 EP What on God’s Green Earth? with a new 6-song 12″ titled What the Fuck Planet Are These Guys From?. It’s due out September 8th on Smartpunk Records – check out the first single “Idiot” below. Pre-order the record here, there are three color variants, each with a screen printed B-Side.

Another awesome upcoming release from Smartpunk Records: Keep Flying‘s debut LP Daylight is coming August 15th. Check out the new single “Transparency” below and pre-order the record here.

Seattle pop-punk band The Subjunctives (fronted by Ean Hernandez of Sicko) will release their sophomore album Let’s Try This Again on September 16th. Mom’s Basement and Monster Zero Records rarely miss, and they hit a fucking grand slam with their latest release from The Haermorrhoids. I’m calling it now, At the Earth’s Core is the Ramonescore record of the year. Camp Punksylvania is a three-day punk rock festival happening September 1st-3rd in Scranton, PA. A few names on the absolutely bitchin’ lineup include the Suicide Machines, A Wilhelm Scream, Belvedere & Tsunami Bomb. Pirates Press released a Subhumans box set earlier this year. It sold out instantly and is now selling for over $400 on Discogs. Good news for those who missed out: it’s getting a second pressing! Chicago celebrates St. Patrick’s Day a bit early. The city partook in its traditional Dyeing of the Chicago River, followed by a boisterous post-downtown Irish parade afternoon. The events draw thousands, most seeming to be decked out in various formed of green plastic, t-shirts slightly updated, often vulgarity or cheesy wise, from the classic of bygone years “Kiss Me I’m Irish,” and silly hats. More than a few people remarked that the only thing seemingly missing were actual Irish people. The accuracy of that last part I do not know.

However, after a day accented by a few celebrants puking up green beer on the “L,” Reggie’s acted as a sort of refuge from the shenanigans (yes, I use that word sans apologies). The pride of Southside Chicago Celtic punk, Flatfoot 56, as it often does at this time of the year, stormed the stage. The band had hearty support from The Rumjacks, The Drowns, and another of Chicago’s own, Criminal Kids.


To say that a Flatfoot 56 show is always a good time is an understatement. Led by the affable founding members the brothers Bawinkel, Tobin and Kyle, the band roars through its set. Tobin Bawinkel, the towering lead singer, exudes the energy of a preacher leading an old-time revival under a big tent, the charm of your favorite high school teacher, (he actually is a high school social studies teacher in the Chicago Public school system), and the requisite charisma of a veteran frontman. Kyle Bawinkel, with a good-natured, but slightly mischievous grin, slams on bass, Drummer Dan Alfonsi, aka singer of another windy city band “Still Alive,” works in tight conjunction with Kyle for a sturdy backbeat. Original Flatfoot 56 Pipes player Josh Robieson rejoined the band a few years back, much to the delight of the Ollie Mob.


The band is well-known as a Christian group. But during the secular shows, you won’t witness proselytizing. However, you will hear stories of forgiveness, redemption, unity, and faith laid bare in FF56 lyrics. Two of the band’s most popular songs played live are actually covers of
Christian hymnals. Tobin regularly encouraged, pre-pandemic, fans to hold the
hands of their neighbors at the show, as they slowly build then burst into a very up-tempo rendition of “Amazing Grace.” Tobin still encourages fans to take a moment to introduce themselves to those around them they do not yet know.


On this particular night, however, the hymnal of choice, was the joyously rowdy version of “I’ll Fly Away.” And whether fans describe themselves as believers, atheists, agnostics, or by any other religion-related description, the crowd joins in, triumphantly singing the chorus.

“I’ll fly away, oh, Glory
I’ll fly away
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by
I’ll fly away.”

It’s quite a moving moment. Decency is a word you will often hear associated with this band. It fits, in part, because it requests one thing of its fans, to bear cathartic witness to our shared humanity. But a FF56 show is no solemn affair, Its reliable strength is neither generic nor boring.

This was demonstrated as the members of Flatfoot 56 blasted through the set, also including “Brotherhood,” “Knuckles Up,” “Winter In Chicago,” a terrific cover version of “The Wild Rover,” “Courage,” and “We Grow Stronger. 

Flatfoot 56 shows, simply put, are the very definition of a rip-roaring good time free of judgment, full of joy.


Celtic punk band The Rumjacks, was founded in Sydney, Australia but now its members are based in Europe.

Lead singer Mike Rivkees, who is actually from the United States, spent most of this time on stage in perpetual motion, springing lightly on the front of his shoes. Also playing tin whistle throughout the set, Rivkees commanded the crowd with his strong vocals. He led the bandmates, including his Mickey Rickshaw bandmate Kyle Goyette on accordion, through a rollicking set proper for a modern-day St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the USA. The Rumjacks easily satisfied the fans as it tore through “One for the Road,” ”Kirkintilloch,” “Bloodsoaked in Chorus,” ”A Fistful O’ Roses,” “Sainted Millions,” and “An Irish Pub Song.”

Hopefully we will not have to wait until the next St. Patrick’s Day celebration to welcome The Rumjacks back to Chicago.


The Drowns, out of the Emerald State helped celebrate the Emerald Isle with a spirited performance. The Seattle band has a stacked festival year. Among the upcoming highlights are Punk Rock Bowling, Punk in Drublic, and Rebellion Festival, as well as Sjock Festival. So it was a treat for those who can’t travel to a big festival to be able to see them at Reggie’s. The boisterous set included “Black Lung,” “Lost Boys Of Suburbia,” “One More Pint,” “Wolves on The Throne,” and ”Hold Fast.”

Band members felt compelled to point out one of their tour highlights or perhaps lowlights. The band hit White Castle pre-show. For at least one of its crew it was the first taste of the iconic fast-food joint. There is a White Castle right around the corner from the venue. Unsurprisingly (at least to me, as I am not a White Castle fan), the band expressed more than a little regret at that dinner choice.

The Drowns also played a barn-burning cover of Sweet’s “Ballroom Blitz.” Of course, that classic song was featured in the classic comedy “Wayne’s World,” which has several keys scenes set in the Windy City area. The crowd was absolutely all for it.

Regret is something you may experience if you don’t catch this The Drowns live at your first chance. Whether it is at a huge festival or in a more intimate setting, the crucial thing is to catch them. You will be glad you did.


I am always delighted to see Southside Chicago’s own Criminal Kids on the bill. The band fired up the hometown crowd to kick off the party.

The rough and tumble but sweet attitude befitting a band with this name was demonstrated as Criminal Kids blasted through “Little Bitch,” “Night,” “Outcast,” “Vanity,” and “Life.”

The band’s rambunctious cover of The Undertones classic from 1978, “Teenage Kicks,” was a notch above terrific.

Is this where I say it’d be a crime to miss Criminal Kids? Ok, I will apologize for that groaner. The manner of expressing this idea might be dorky. But the sentiment is not.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes has a rotating cast of characters. At this House of Blues Chicago, only one of the original members, Spike Slawson, was on stage. Joey Cape of Lagwagon and Fat Mike of NOFX were unable to join Slawson due to both bands being on tour. However, Slawson did have a pretty solid set of bandmates: CJ Ramone on bass, Speedo aka John “The Swami” Reis of Rocket From the Crypt on guitar, Jake Kiley from Strung Out, and Andrew “Pinch” Pinching formerly of The Damned, on drums. The entire band was decked out in white denim and glittery pink shirts, accented by white ties Slawson added a white sports jacket and Elton John style specs, as well his Lounge Lizard persona.


The band zoomed through a pair of John Denver tunes, “Leaving on a Jet Plane” and “Take Me Home Country Roads,” as well as Paul Simon’s “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard,” Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up,” “ScienceFiction/Double Feature” by Richard O’Brien


The set also featured Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again,” “Rocket Man (I Think It’s Going to Be a Long, Long Time)” by Elton John, “Mandy,” by Barry Manilow and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”


Me First and the Gimme Gimmes serves up a reliably good time, no matter what the lineup at any given time. It’s all in good fun, though there was an early oof moment when Slawson joked about John Denver’s skills as a helicopter pilot (Denver died when the home-made aircraft he was flying crashed. The National Transportation Safety Board determined the crash to pilot errors). Aside from that, the band members play with an earnestness rather than a mocking spirit underneath the levity. They seem to be enjoying this insouciant break from their “day jobs.” The crowd was all for it and left asking for more.


The Black Tones, on its first national tour, got the show started in a big way. The duo, comprised of Eva Walker on vocals and guitar, and her twin brother Cedric Walker on drums and vocals, have built a devoted fan base in the state of Washington. The Seattle duo’s hit song, “The Key Of Black (They Want Us Dead)” speaks to police brutality fueled by racism.The name of the Walkers’ first album, Cobain & Cornbread, is a nod to both their hometown of the Emerald City, and their family’s southern roots in Louisiana.

On stage, joined by family as back-up musicians and singers they soared. Eva Walker is both an indefatigable shredder and a dynamic vocalist. Cedric Walker is a thunderous drummer, every bash complementing his sister’s swaggering stage presence. With songs like “Mr. Pink,” “Ghetto Spaceship,” and “Mama, There’s A Spider In My Room,” this band will continue to knock the socks off of those lucky enough to see them in the future.


In the middle slot of the evening were the rising stars in Son Rompe Pera. The band, like The Black Tones, is led by siblings. The three brothers Gama: The two Marimberos/Vocalists, Mongo and Kacho, and percussionist/vocalist Kilos. The family is from Naucalpan de Juárezon the outskirts of Mexico City. They are joined in Son Rompe Pera by Raul Albarrán on bass and Albarrán’s cousin, Richi López on drums. The band has played nearly every size of music venue, and was interviewed by National Public Radio. They were also featured in a video for NPR’s Tiny Desk Sessions, On this Windy City Saturday night, Son Rompe Pera buoyantly showcased its sound which is traditional marimba music and cumbia fused with garage punk and psychobilly. Marimberos Kacho’s and Mongo’s synchronized rapid fire banging of their mallets across their marimbas, whilst furiously dancing, building momentum, caused them to appear breathless as they hit the crescendos. Those moments elicited gasps from the crowd followed by roaring cheers. Son Rompe Pera did not just warm up the crowd for the headliners, Instead, it was introducing to many of the Me First and the Gimme Gimmes fans a piece of the members’ heritages and family traditions. In the process, they were also garnering new fans of their music and of the marimba and cumbia.

The Murder City Devils make a rare one-off appearance at the venerable San Francisco venue. The Great American Music Hall was built in 1907. It’s been a burlesque theater, jazz club, Moose Lodge, and in its current incarnation as one of San Francisco’s best music venues since 1973. When Seattle’s Murder City Devils booked a one-off show with Southern California’s Soft Palms as opener, we had to be there with our camera.

Soft Palms are guitarist/singer Julia Kugel (The Coathangers) and her husband drummer Scott Montoya (formerly of The Growlers). Their sound is more indy pop and gentle rock, though we found them engaging and likable.

The Murder City Devils were formed in 1996 in Seattle during the Pacific Northwest’s garage rock revival. Breaking up in 2001, reforming in 2006, recently they’ve been appearing on rare occasions, with this one-off show to a sell-out crowd being their first since April.

Noah Corona just needed to find a place to eat within a block or two of his home in the Chicago suburb of Villa Park, IL. It was the first day of the Covid lockdown. Lacking groceries and concerned that driving to get food might lead to him being arrested, he walked around the corner from his home and came upon Cemitas Poblanas. The restaurant offered a $9.00 burrito meal, so it instantly became Corona’s daily spot during the pandemic. It also led to friendships with the staff and owners, “Mauro and Jennifer, a couple who had come from NYC in November ‘19 to start their new business. They are both originally from Puebla, Mexico, and spent 18 years in NYC, and worked in restaurants for a lot of that time,” says Corona (whose surname surely caused a few of his friends to tease him in 2020).

Cemitas Poblanas also has a small stage, which planted the seeds in Corona’s mind, of an idea he would work to fruition over the following year. Thus, was born “Punk Rock Tacos,” a monthly Friday nights DIY (do it yourself) event.  

Corona’s DIY ethos was inspired by the late Mark “Monk” Hubbard. The visionary Seattleite Hubbard created the famous Burnside Skatepark Project in Portland, OR. Hubbard also founded Grindline, a company which designed over 400 skatepark across the United States and elsewhere. Corona met Hubbard, a DIY inspiration to many across the world, one month prior to Hubbard’s June 2018 death. Hubbard’s band Grindline, named after his company, was playing in Oakland, CA at a skateboarding event, the P-Stone Invitational. Corona says that during Grindline’s set “He [Hubbard] stared so intensely into my soul as he performed 5 ft in front of me.”

It was a life-changing moment for Corona and would lead directly to his passion project: Punk Rock Tacos (PRT). This is the first of many ideas Corona has for PRT. One he hopes to tackle next is building skateboarding bowl behind the restaurant.

The first PRT Sunday edition led to some patrons being disgruntled by the rowdy punk rock music, so these special showcases take place in a small exterior area behind the restaurant.   

Looking forward to the Fourth of July this year, Corona organized an event to take place on the Sunday the 3rd.  As a nod to Independence Day, the 13-band showcase featured two American flags adorned to the back of an old Army flatbed truck. Said truck, which Corona purchased for the event, also served as the stage. 

Although this was a Fourth of July event, it was hardly a day for shouting “Murica” and chanting USA USA USA. 

Instead, there was a strong diversity of band and crowd members, more than a few Anti-Fascist and Anti-Nazi patches on clothing, call-outs for change and fighting back by the musicians, Pride t-shirts spotted, in addition to feminist statements made. One singer received roaring applause to his declaration that men who lay hands (violently) on women are trash. In many ways, Punk Rock Tacos Fourth on the Third represented what should be the ideals of this experiment in democracy. Oh, and rocking the pit harder than anyone else in attendance were a four-year-old named Lucas and an Australian cattle dog named Max. 

Of course, the main reason for the event wasn’t to focus on the disturbing events of the last several years, and especially the past few months. 

For Punk Rock Tacos founder Noah Corona, this was event was not about politics or division. Rather, it was about release and people having an out outlet to express themselves. Corona reflected on the event a day after the Highland Park mass shooting. He has also been shaken by a fatal motorcycle accident just blocks away from the event which Corona informed me occurred “while we were partying.”  Per Corona, “Life is too shitty to not have a good time, and if people don’t have their outlets a whole lot more death would be upon us.” 

What an outlet it was. Among the thirteen bands were No Dead HeroesThe RustixWAYDSBQuantumThe ThrowawaysShitizen, and Real Bad Real Fast

No Dead Heroes’ mission statement is, “We’re here to fuck shit up.” Shit did not actually get fucked up but the band tore through its 30-minute set much to the delight of the attendees. Those in lawn chairs and car seats removed from their vehicles to be used as lawn chairs, as well as those who stood both near and away from the stage. Frank Lombardo propelled the band both in voice and on the drums. Whether it was the heat of the bright afternoon or his physical efforts, Lombardo’s reddened face painted a portrait of punk rock intensity. 

Milwaukee’s The Rustix don’t consider themselves a political band according to its social media. However, per a Facebook post from June 25, 2022, “Rustix and the Midwest Hardcore Punx scene stand in solidarity with people that have uteruses. If you don’t, don’t come to our shows, you aren’t welcome.” For the band members some issues transcend politics and The Rustix brought a set that was as tight and strong as that message.

WAYDSB states on its website: “We want to share our perspectives with you, and maybe our music will help you understand and feel what it is we’re expressing.” The band demonstrated this motto during its banger of a set. Drummer Liam Cavanaugh was clad in a (LGBQT+) “Pride” shirt and rainbow tie dye style cap, while guitarist James McFadden wore a t-shirt sporting the name of satirical 2016 U.S. Presidential candidate Deez Nutz. 

Quantum, out of Crystal Lake, brought the fun. With a combo multi-bongo and just enough cowbells set up, how could it not? There was Bass player Shawn Belletynee draped in an American flag as a cape, a brand-new song entitled Planet B.S., and blood. Well, blood on the bongos at least. Lead singer Zac Dawson decided it was a good sign and queried “Blood on the bongos, isn’t that a Bob Dylan album?”

Noah Corona’s own band, The Throwaways, elicited loud cheers and clapping for both the music and for his creation of Punk Rock Tacos and this event. It was obvious by his constant smile throughout the day, how grateful Corona was for that appreciation and the joy his hard work has brought him. The Throwaways, as a band, honored his hard work with its rollicking set. Immediately after the set Corona was back on the ground making sure the rest of the evening went off without a hitch. 

Ah Shitizen. With all due respect to, and respect is most definitely owed to them, Josh on drums, Elliot on bass, and Jerm on guitar, it is lead singer Claudia Guajardo who steals the most focus at every Shitizen show. With her hyperkinetic energy and charisma, she is the very definition a band’s front person. As is the case at every Shitizen show, Guajardo refused to stick only to the stage. But this being on the back of a truck, she did accept an assist from her boyfriend Adam Kreutzer (lead singer for Kreutzer and the newly joined drummer for Knoxious.) who helped her in and out of the high up flatbed stage. She scaled the truck herself before the set and after, but Kreutzer’s help allowed her the continuity of singing, microphone in hand. It’s a blast to watch Guajardo in frenzied action. The band is also a model of DIY as they finished up making their band shirts and merch themselves the morning of the event. 

Metro Chicago’s Real Bad Real Fast was formed in 5 or 6 years ago. They invited friends and family to this event on Facebook with a sentiment presently shared by a good portion of the USA: “Come celebrate Freedom (cough)” adding “At least freedom enough for us to rock your socks off!!” As the gloaming set in, lights were installed on the already too confined stage before knocking off of socks began.

Corona described the event as epic and credited his second in command organizer Matthew “Cactus Matt” Durica and sound engineer Steve Anthony for much of the success of the event and PRT, and told everyone involved that he was “proud of all of us.”

A few days after the event Corona stated, “I am happier than shit right now, and all I can think is, what’s next?”

DIESEL BOY
Gets Old

Comeback album of the year? Diesel Boy returns with their first new record in over 20 years! Gets Old is on brand with nothing but fun, sarcastic, melodic punk songs. Standout tracks include “Dirty Dishes”, “The Finnish Line”, and the closing track “Two Stones”, which is a beautiful tribute to the late Tony Sly.

BORDERLINES
Keep Pretending

Portland, Maine’s Borderlines release their debut album 10 years after the band started. Keep Pretending is a laid back pop-punk record for fans of The Methadones, The Copyrights, The Gamits, etc. It kinda reminds me of Warning era Green Day a bit, but less depressing. Good driving music.

PAPERBACK TRAGEDY

Dying Scene Band Spotlight alumni / Baltimore melodic punks Paperback Tragedy return with their second new record in as many years. 8! continues where Threeshe! left off with another masterclass in Epifat style rapid-fire skate punk.

THE HAERMORRHOIDS
At the Earth’s Core

Listen up, Ramonescore fans! This is the subgenre’s best album of the year. Hamburg, Germany’s Haermorrhoids rip through 16 songs in 28 minutes. No frills, no bullshit, these guys aren’t fucking around. The whole record is killer but my favorite songs are “Time Warp Incest”, “Captain Isolation”, and the title track. For fans of Screeching Weasel, The Lillingtons, Chixdiggit, The Queers, etc.

BEAT THE SMART KIDS
Hot Death

Hailing from the windy city, Chicago ska-punks Beat the Smart Kids buck the genre’s recent trends and stick to their more traditional third wave sound. Check out their new record Hot Death if you like Mustard Plug, MU330, or Skankin’ Pickle. Standout tracks include “Twist the Knife”, “Counterfeit”, and “Into the Galaxy”.

WRONG LIFE / PAPER TIGERS
Last Words of an Optimist

Wrong Life is one of The Murderburgers’ frontman Fraser Murderburger’s current projects. The band just released a new record a few months ago, so I was surprised when I saw this split with fellow Edinburgh, Scotland residents Paper Rifles pop up on Spotify. The two new Wrong Life songs on here are great, and this is my first time hearing Paper Rifles – their songs are great, too – I’ll have to check out their back catalog.

DUCKBOY
tragic love songs to study to (vol. 5)

Duckboy is kinda mysterious, I can’t find anything about them song social media, and I think it’s probably a one man band. Anyway, there are seven tracks on their debut EP but most of them are these bullshit little interludes. The three that are actual songs are pretty fucking good. I’m not a fan of this kind of “Defend Pop-Punk” style pop-punk but this is really listenable. “XXL hadron collider” is a bad ass song.

Making Friends – “Heroes Die”

“Heroes Die” is the latest single from Brighton, UK skate punks Making Friends’ upcoming album Fine Dying. This is quintessential skate punk for fans of Lagwagon, No Use For A Name, NOFX, and all the other usual suspects.

7 Years Bad Luck – “Another Life”

Austrian punks 7 Years Bad Luck return with their first new album in six years! 2017’s Great, Big, Nothing is a hard act to follow but these guys are up to the task. “Another Life” is the second single from No Shame (that’s their new record – we’ll talk about it next month!). This song reminds me a lot of Pulley’s “Hooray for Me” – I dare you to listen to it and tell me you disagree.

MxPx – “Stay Up All Night”

MxPx is one of my favorite bands of all time, so even though the leadoff single from their upcoming album Find A Way Home is a bit lackluster, I’ve gotta include it on my best of July list. “Stay Up All Night” is a serviceable, radio ready song, which is why it’s kinda confusing they chose it as the first single. Regardless, I’m excited for the new record – I think the best is yet to come.

Mustard Plug – “Fall Apart”

Mustard Plug’s got a new record on the way, too! Where Did All My Friends Go? is due out September 8th on Bad Time Records. The lead single “Fall Apart” reminds me a lot of the band’s 2007 album In Black and White. I’m looking forward to hearing more!

Judo CHOP! – “Conquer”

Death, taxes, People of Punk Rock Records putting out killer melodic punk. Judo CHOP!’s new single “Conquer” is an absolute banger. Lookout for the Aussie melodic punks’ new record coming later this year on People of Punk Rock.

Swill – “Delicate Subject”

What’s that? You thought the People of Punk Rock fellating was done? Of course not! They also went and signed a band from my home state, Jacksonville, FL’s Swill. This is the lead single from their new record Delicate Subjects, which comes out on August 18th. These guys simply do not miss.

Marked Out – “Distance”

Bakersfield, CA’s Marked Out plays early 2000’s inspired pop-punk. “Distance” is the first single from their new EP Never Enough. Recommended if you like Allister, The Movielife, Slick Shoes, etc.

The Subjunctives – “Goodbye I Will Not Miss You, You Dicks”

The Subjunctives are an old school pop-punk band from Seattle, fronted by Ean Hernandez from Sicko. This is the lead single from their sophomore album Let’s Try This Again, which is due out on September 16th. For fans of 90’s pop-punk.
