Random Cover Song: Against Me! – “Bastards Of Young” (The Replacements)

Cover songs are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get.  We here at Dying Scene love hearing punk bands do their own take on other band’s songs.  Sometimes they pull off amazing interpretations of old classics, sometimes they’re not much more than humble tributes to a fellow artist, and other times they’re just downright laughable renditions of otherwise great songs.  Good or bad.  Intriguing or mundane.  We’ll let you be the judge.

Here’s a rare Against Me! cover not appearing on any of the band’s records, EP’s, demos, or otherwise; just one compilation album entitled “We’ll Inherit The Earth: A Tribute To The Replacements,” referring of course to the long-running Twin Cities punk band that broke up in 1991. Against Me! covered The Replacements again with Joan Jett earlier this year.

  • This is a good song no matter who plays it. Wish the rest of The Replacements catalog was as good as “Bastards of Young”– of course maybe I just don’t know where to look. Anyone know the best place to start with The Replacements?

    • “Let It Be” and “Tim”. That’s all you really need (although if you prefer the faster stuff, maybe “Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash” is your thing, but in my humble opinion the ‘Mats weren’t very good as a punk band and really shined at the beginning of their more experimental phase)
