This week on Dying Scene RadioElena Venetia reports from the field, travelling by Chinatown Bus from NYC to Delaware to interview Nathan Gray, frontman of the post-hardcore/punk band, boysetsfireBobby Pickles joins the conversation from the comfort of his studio, where he is safe to interrogate the singer from afar. Then Masked Intruder bumps the pair before their concert at NYC’s Webster Hall. EP Review: Masked Intruder – ‘Incriminating Evidence: 2011 Demos’

When you think about it, 2011 wasn’t all that long ago. And yet, for a band like Masked Intruder, it seems like eons ago. Who would have thought that four years ago a band that dressed up in color coordinated criminal outfits could be one of the biggest (that’s debatable, I suppose) acts on Fat Wreck Chords? Clearly Red Scare head Tobias Jeg did- which is likely why he quickly scooped them up for their first album (before they were even more quickly picked up by Fat). To celebrate everything that has happened to the band in the last four years, Toby has re-released the band’s very first recordings- a four song demo, newly christened Incriminating Evidence – 2011 Demos.

Of the four songs here, three of them have been re-recorded for later albums. Both “How Do I Get to You?” and “I’m in (Unrequited) Love” were included on the band’s 2012 self-titled album (the former also appeared on the band’s First Offense EP, and the latter was shortened to simply “Unrequited Love”), and “I Fought the Law (But the Law Beat the Shit Out of Me)” showed up on the band’s sophomore effort, M.I., leaving “I Plead the 5th” as the sole track to remain exclusive to this release and therefore the only “new” song of the bunch to any newcomers to the band that haven’t already heard this EP.

For a demo recording, the production is solid here. It’s not as slick-sounding as M.I., but it’s on par with First Offense and maybe even Masked Intruder, so it’s curious as to why these songs are labeled as demos (also worth noting: these versions don’t sound all that different from their studio counterparts). Some might be disappointed with the lack of material that hasn’t already been re-recorded, but Incriminating Evidence provides a lot of support that Masked Intruder has always had a strong sense of bubblegum pop melodies, and maybe that, gimmick or not, they were destined for success from the start.

Red Scare to release Cobra Skulls, Menzingers and Masked Intruder 7-inches for Record Store Day

Red Scare Industries has a few releases they’ll be churning out for Record Store Day.  I can’t write it up any better than Toby already has so I’ll just let you get the info straight from the source:

Red Scare has some neat 7″s comin’ at ya for RSD. YES, Record Store Day is silly, but in the spirit of “more hustlin’ and less hatin’”, we’re gonna be team players and take part in the festivities. Basically, it’s like this: it’s up to us to save the music industry and we have the three fuckin’ bands that are gonna do it. There’s The Menzingers “I Was Born“, Cobra Skulls “Live At The BBC“, and Masked Intruder “Incriminating Evidence: 2011 Demos“. Pretty great, right?

Here’s the funny part… so, long story short, the music industry have always been about a buncha dicks bullying the little guys. Record stores and chains have historically tried to strong-arm labels into giving them free shit and money in exchange for carrying their records, etc etc. Those were the days, right?!? Well, the mean record stores all went outta business and their shitty practices died with them. Except now the same assholes run Record Store Day! Cool story… where was I? Oh yeah, we made all these great 7″s for you guys but Trey Anastasio and Jethro Tull took up all the “official” RSD release slots, so TECHNICALLY the Zingers and ‘Truders 7″s come out April 14th, but they will be in stores the same time as the sacred Record Store Day stuff. I don’t fucking know, man, but these 7″s are pretty limited and pretty great, so get on it. As a special dealie for those who can’t get out to stores, we’re doing a bundle for all three releases with Interpunk. There’s only like 40 bundles though, so good luck with that.

As always, this stuff will be available in digital formats, so hit iTunes and whatnot. You can also visit our webstore too.
