Random Cover Song Thursday: Raised Fist covers Gorilla Biscuits’ “New Direction”

Cover songs are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get.  We here at Dying Scene love hearing punk bands do their own take on other band’s songs.  Sometimes they pull off amazing interpretations of old classics, sometimes they’re not much more than humble tributes to a fellow artist, and other times they’re just downright laughable renditions of otherwise great songs.  Good or bad.  Intriguing or mundane.  We’ll let you be the judge. This week it’s Swedish hardcore band Raised Fist covering “New Direction” by NYHC legends Gorilla Biscuits.

Check out the cover and compare it to the original here.

The original appears on the Gorilla Biscuit’s 1989 album “Start Today.” Raised Fist’s version appears on “Ignoring the Guidelines”.

Why did they choose the name Raised Fist?

Ever wonder where some bands come up with their band names?  Well, we do, and we’re sick of sitting around scratching our heads about it.  We’re hitting the streets (aka. “Internet”) to find the origins behind some of the more bizarre, intriguing or just plain random band names in the scene.  Every Wednesday we’ll be pulling the curtain back on a different band and this week it’s Swedish hardcore kings Raised Fist.

Their name was inspired by the 1992 Rage Against The Machine song “Know Your Enemy”. Specifically, it was taken from the opening line “Born with insight and a Raised Fist.” Check out the song here.
