Punknews is reporting that Erik Petersen, the frontman and founder of Philadelphia folk-punk band Mischief Brew, has passed away. The band has not released a statement regarding Petersen’s passing, but we will let you know if and when they do.
Mischief Brew was getting ready to embark on a European tour later this month, but it’s safe to assume it has been cancelled.
It goes without saying that our hearts go out to Mischief Brew. We will be keeping Erik’s friends and family in our thoughts.
Update: On July 12th, the Upper Darby Police Department’s official Twitter page reported that Petersen was missing and “may be having some emotional issues.”

When you hear that Mischief Brew will perform in your town, you make sure you get your ass to that show, even if you were riding in the back of an ambulance that same morning. I spent the better part of that Saturday getting my mom to the hospital, who came down with some severe viral infection, and waiting around as doctors and nurses performed tests and ultrasounds. It didn’t stop me from seeing one of my favorite bands, and I decided I was taking up too much space in the emergency room. I knew I had to go and see Mischief Brew, just to simply get me out of those hospital blues.

Philly folk punks Mischief Brew have announced they will be releasing a new song called “O, Pennsyltucky!” The song will be appearing on the band’s new album This Is Not For Children, which is due out early next year, but they are planning on releasing the song as a single in digital and cassette format along with two non-album tracks “We are the ground,” and “Dirty overhauls.” The single will be released on October 14th along with a video for “O, Pennsyltucky!” Here’s what the band had to say about that video:
“The video was filmed entirely in the near-ghost town of Centralia, PA, known for the underground Anthracite coal fire that has been burning since the 1960s, and has reduced the population to the single digits. An abandoned highway leading to the town, buckled from the fire’s heat and overtaken by nature, also serves as a setting for the video. The song references Centralia in the lyrics, as well as other places in the state, including Three Mile Island. It is somewhat of a love song to Pennsylvania.”
Mischief Brew most recently released a previously lost album called “Kettle Rebellion” on April 1st of this year. You can read the story behind the record and stream it in full on the group’s Bandcamp page.

Folk punk stalwarts Mischief Brew have detailed a bit about their upcoming album:
“Buzzing, hot on the heels of a great rehearsal tonight! Some loose lips for ya: our next LP will be titled “This Is Not For Children,” it will be recorded in Philly by Steve Roche @ Permanent Hearing Damage (who recorded “Bakenal,” “Bellingham & Philadelphia,” “Songs From Under The Sink,” & several other EPs), and we’ll be playing at least six songs intended for it on March 8 @ Kung Fu Necktie. Join the party here…”
Last week, the band released Thanks, Bastards!, a compilation of early demos, outtakes, and rough cuts and it’s free to download on their Bandcamp page.
