Great Lakes, Fucko and more to play Planned Parenthood benefit in Bosotn

It’s no secret that the incoming Presidential administration spells more than just impending doom for a great number of  individuals, groups, and organizations across all walks of life. We’re only a little more than a week removed from the disastrous election results, and already a great number of punk bands and scene promoters have sprung into action to help raise funds and awareness in support of some of the causes that many of us hold near and dear to our hearts. As we here at Dying Scene get word of some of these benefits taking place in our respective communities, we’ll pass the message along!

Planned Parenthood, for example, is one organization that’s come into the Trump Administration’s crosshairs, what with his repeated statements about completely defunding the nonprofit reproductive health organization. Boston punks Great Lakes USA (pictured above) are teaming up with fellow Boston punks Fucko, one-man Brooklyn-based “campfire soul” act Yoni Gordon and somewhat difficult-to-label Planet of Adventure for a Planned Parenthood benefit show that’ll take place at Great Scott in Boston’s Allston neighborhood. Details of the show can be found here, and if you can’t make it out but you still want to help, you can donate to Planned Parenthood at this location!

Album Review: Deforesters – “Deforesters”

Shortly after signing with independent punk label Black Numbers Records, this four piece from Toronto, Ontario released a surprise, self titled EP. The four track album, which is a follow up to their extremely well received 2013 debut EP Bones, clocks in at just over twelve minutes. Not that their first album didn’t have high production value, but this new one has a more precise, and focused manner to it than their prior offering. No surprise that it was recorded and mixed by Drive Studios’ Steve Rizum who has also worked with the likes of  The Flatliners, Dillinger Four and The Penske File, among others. The quality of the production isn’t the only thing that stands out on this sophomore release, however. The thoughtfulness of the lyrics and messages and the articulation in which they are conveyed are what hooked me. It’s deliberate and crystal clear, something akin to punk legends Face to Face in regards to the songwriting and similar to Off With Their Heads in it’s packaging and delivery. It’s tangible, energetic, blue collar music. Sure, it’s catchy and appealing to the masses, but it’s also grittier and more mature than typical pop punk. Since we’ve got all these labels laying around, Easycore would probably be the best classifier, although they categorize themselves as Douchecore. This same lighthearted, self deprecating humor is reinforced on their Facebook page which is pretty good for a laugh. All in all, this album is adroit, with each track expertly ordered to maximize continuity and flow. It has more of a wisdom and depth to it than some others in the overpopulated and extremely broad category of pop punk and that trait is exactly what makes these guys stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Stream the entire EP and check out the track breakdown below! If it elates your ears, both of their albums are available for Name Your Price, show them some support!

Puddle Splasher stream new EP “Missed Connection”

New Jersey’s own Puddle Splasher are streaming their new EP Missed Connection in full. This is the band’s sophomore release and their first on Animal Style Records, whom they signed to back in September. Guitarist Andy Altadonna had the following to say about the EP:

“These four songs came to life as Dante and I transitioned to college life in 2014. I wrote all the songs on an acoustic guitar in my dorm. Lyrics always came naturally to Dante, so it only made sense that he provide the lyrics for these songs. I was never much of a wordsmith. We implemented these songs into the set for our winter tour that year. Playing them every night on tour allowed us to really feel out the songs and make changes as needed. For us, the live performance is what it’s all about, so getting the chance to test each song live was crucial. After tour, we set out to record the EP at The Barbershop Studios with producer Brett Romnes (I Am the Avalanche, Chad Smith, Anthony Raneri).”

You can listen to all 4 songs below.

Puddle Splasher released their debut EP, Poor Planning, on September 23, 2014.
