Random Cover Song: La Dispute plays Repeater (Fugazi)

Cover songs are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. We here at Dying Scene love hearing punk bands do their own take on other band’s songs. Sometimes they pull off amazing interpretations of old classics, sometimes they’re not much more than humble tributes to a fellow artist, and other times they’re just downright laughable renditions of otherwise great songs. Good or bad. Intriguing or mundane. We’ll let you be the judge.

Today’s cover comes from poet punks La Dispute tackling the Fugazi classic, “Repeater”. The original is the title track to Fugazi’s debut full length album.

Listen to both versions here.

Anti-Flag and La Dispute bassist release special edition print/t-shirt to benefit Pussy Riot

In response to the conviction of Russian feminist punks Pussy Riot, Anti-Flag and Adam Vass (bassist of La Dispute) have teamed up to release a special edition poster and t-shirt to benefit the members.  Adam Vass and Anti-Flag made comments:

“When I first found out about the persecution of Pussy Riot, I was shocked that such a thing could exist in our world. Most of my friends and I have similar attitudes as the defendants, but I’ve never had to worry about being jailed for the idea. I immediately wanted to do whatever I could to help. With the help of the guys in Anti-Flag, we’ve come up with something I can be proud of as an artist and that can help people who need it right now.” –Adam Vass

“The women of Pussy Riot have put a face, a sound and a voice to the struggle for human rights in Russia. But their work is much more than that. They have put fear in to the power structure of their country, and the support they’ve received globally has done the same. It is our duty to keep their agenda and their welfare a part of the public discourse. As prisoners of conscience the story of Pussy Riot is only a victory if the story is being told.

With these shirts we hope to keep their story alive. Wear one to school, to the dinner table at home, even make your own Pussy Riot shirt, stencil their logo and name everywhere… Make people question who are Pussy Riot and provide them with the answer: anyone who stands up for what they believe.” – Anti-Flag

Anti-Flag also covered Pussy Riot’s “Virgin Mary, Redeem Us of Putin.” Check it out by clicking here.

Interview: Jordan Dreyer (La Dispute) discusses touring, “Wildlife” and homemade instruments

Michigan-based quintet La Dispute is a band distinct from their post-hardcore peers, their energy breathing new life into an old-school style. Earning the band instant respect is their unique exposition of colossal musical climaxes, subtler but equally powerful soft moments, the captivating storytelling and imagery of the poetic lyrics, ambitious production feats, and frontman Jordan Dreyer’s unforgettable sob-screaming. As they kick off their US tour to promote their sophomore album “Wildlife,” I had the opportunity to sit down with Jordan and talk touring, homemade instruments, 18th century French comedy and how they got the album to sound so raw and untweaked.

La Dispute stream demo “Sad Idea in A”

Grand Rapids, Michigan’s La Dispute are streaming a unique demo of a song called “Sad Idea in A” which would later become the beginning of their song “All Our Bruised Bodies and the Whole Heart Shrinks” off their 2011 album, “Wildlife.”  They had this to say about the recording:

In the back of the van this week on a longer drive, Brad, Chad, and I were rediscovering some old demos that ended up becoming songs on Wildlife. This was “sad idea in A.mp3” and eventually became the beginning of “All Our Bruised Bodies and the Whole Heart Shrinks.” It is three acoustic guitars recorded in garage band in my lonely basement apartment about 14 months ago. Weird to go back and find it in this form, but thought it would be cool to share.”

You can stream it here.

“Wildlife” was released last October on No Sleep Records.
