Random Cover Song Thursday: Bowling For Soup cover A Flock Of Seagulls’ “I Ran”

Cover songs are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. We here at Dying Scene love hearing punk bands do their own take on other band’s songs. Sometimes they pull off amazing interpretations of old classics, sometimes they’re not much more than humble tributes to a fellow artist, and other times they’re just downright laughable renditions of otherwise great songs. Good or bad. Intriguing or mundane. We’ll let you be the judge. Today we have Bowling For Soup taking on the 80’s classic, “I Ran” by A Flock Of Seagulls.

Check out the cover and compare it to the original here. What the Bowling For Soup version lacks in bad music videos and 80’s hairstyles, it compensates with catchy guitar licks and enthusiasm! The Bowling For Soup version can be found on their 2002 album “Drunk Enough To Dance,” while the A Flock of Seagulls original can be found on their 1982 self-titled album.

Bowling For Soup in outer space?!?

Here’s a bizarre story for your Saturday. Apparently, astronauts currently aboard the space shuttle Discovery and the International Space Station were in need of a wake up call from NASA Mission Control this morning. It seems the crew had to get an early start for a full day of unloading a storage module and fixing a carbon dioxide removal system (okay, that’s enough science talk).

So at 3:24am Eastern Standard Time this morning, Mission Control woke the crew by blaring Bowling for Soup’s “Ohio (Come Back To Texas).” The track was picked by the families of the entire crew (Mission Control is based in Houston, Texas, you see). Click here for a live performance of “Ohio.”

Bowling For Soup hit the road next month in support of the forthcoming “Fishing for Woos,” due out April 26th on Razor & Tie Records.

Bowling For Soup’s timely release of “Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy”

bowlingforsoupAround the Holiday season, Bowling For Soup ran a poll asking fans what holiday song they’d like to hear the band do an acoustic rendition of.  The winning song was “Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy” originally written and recorded by the country artist Buck Owens.

Unfortunately, due to a full touring schedule and the misplacement of acoustic guitars – the song was not recorded in time for the Christmas holidays. However, never ones to back down from a request Bowling For Soup found time in January 2010 to lay the song down…in their own special way.

The song is now available for download through the BFS Army Fancorps site for official fans.
