DS Staff Picks – Top 10 Albums of 2012 (Tim)

So I’ll start by saying that I’m really irresponsible. Technically, the deadline for this list is one hour and twenty seven minutes from now, and I’m only just starting. I’ll continue by saying that writing this list is going to be really difficult. You know why? Because this was a fan-damn-tastic year for new music. Like damn guys, a really great year. I had the chance to buy almost every release I was stoked on, and each one has stayed in constant rotation since I purchased it. I’d almost bet that you could go to a record store, say “give me a record from 2012”, and you’d love it. For this reason, I’m only going to number the three releases that I know I’ll carry with me out of this year. So, here we go.

DS Staff Picks – Top 10 Albums of 2012 (Jay)

Howdy gang!

It’s that time of year again. Time for entertainment journalists, amateur and professional alike, to put on our self-important hats and present you, dear readers, with our thoughts on the year that is coming to a close. I find “Best of the year” lists to be rather insulting due to their very existence being overwhelmingly subjective by nature, so here are my thoughts on my favorite music of 2012.

By all accounts (or at least by my own accounts), 2012 was a solid-not-stellar year for music. 2011 contained a lot of albums that are still in regular rotation in my collection; 2012 has had a small handful that have maintained a spot in my regular rotation since their release (Exister and Handwritten especially), a few more that took a little while to grow on me (which is always a good thing), and a larger handful that, while solid, are almost interchangeable in their spots on this list. Also, as per usual, I’ve kept my list here exclusively to bands that we cover here at Dying Scene. If you’re interested in a wider palate, don’t sleep on Acts by RNDM, Drugs N Hymns by Rocco Deluca, Neck Of The Woods by Silversun Pickups, Mutt by Cory Branan, Silver Age by the immortal Bob Mould, Blunderbuss by the inimitable Jack White and The House That Jack Built by Jesca Hoop.

Alright, enough rambling. Here‘s my list…and by all means, use the comment section to remind me how much it sucks.

Hot Water Music detail upcoming live album/DVD “Live In Chicago”

Gainesville punk rockers Hot Water Music have announced they will be releasing a live album and DVD, entitled “Live In Chicago,” on January 15th, 2013 via No Idea Records. The live album portion will come in the form of three LPs or two CDs, depending on your preference. Click here for all of the pressing info, along with the tracklistings.

Here’s what No Idea had to say:
“I am still in love with the music of HWM as much now as ever. The spirit, the lifting, is still present in everything they do. When they were not a band, there was a void and when they decided to play a couple more shows in 2008 we simply had to find a way to document the events. That effort eventually netted a 6-record series of very limited EPs. And then the band recorded a stellar new album, which came out earlier this year. The plan to release the live recordings as a full album took a backseat, but has percolated… and is finally ready to go. Call it a labor of love, crank it up, and sing along.”

The band last released “Exister” on May 15th through Rise Records. Check out a full list of dates and locations for the band’s upcoming North American tour right here.
