Do you remember your first car? Maybe you worked all summer to save up for it and man, was it worth it! The memories, the miles… sometimes a car can hold more meaning behind its tough, metal exterior than you’d expect. That’s the premise behind rising Toronto punks PUP ’s newest music video for their song “Mabu,” currently premiering right here.

When singer/guitarist Stefan Babcock realized his most prized possession, a beat up champagne-colored 96’ Toyota Camry named Mabu, was on its last leg, he knew he had to send her out in style. So naturally, he signed Mabu up for a real demolition derby and the rest is… well, just watch the video!

The song appears on PUP’s self-titled debut released back in April on SideOneDummy Records.

PUP working on sophomore album

In a recent interview with Exclaim!, Steve Sladkowski of PUP revealed he and the rest of the band are currently working on a follow-up to their self-titled debut album. Here’s what he had to say about the record:

“We tried to take a little bit of a different approach in the way we write. We only went into that first record with 11 songs. It’s not like we had whittled down from 50 songs, but we were super meticulous. We’d work on a song for months on end. I think the self-inflicted wounds have finally healed.

We’re trying to be a little bit less precious. We have this little improvised recording [setup] in our jam space so, once we settle on a structure for a song, we track it, put it away, and go on to the next one. That allows everyone to get some distance from the song and reflect a bit easier because we generally play together four to five days a week.

We’ve tried different producers — some really great ones — and it never translated until Dave [Schiffman, producer of PUP] was like, ‘Okay, we’re just going to record live-off-the-floor.’ That model hit with us, so we try and do as much work to the songs as possible so that when we get into the studio, there’s minimal overdubbing. That’s how our band sounds most vital and energetic.”

We’ll keep you posted as more details on PUP’s sophomore album come to light. The band released their self-titled debut back in April on SideOneDummy Records. They’ll be touring the UK and North America in the coming months.
