Less Than Jake releasing “Anthology” DVD

On June 21, 2011, Less Than Jake are unleashing a whole lot of energy by way of a four DVD digipack called “Anthology” on their own label, Sleep It Off Records. With over eight hours of music spanning six records, “Anthology” is a collection of live performances of each of their albums in sequence: Pezcore (1995), Losing Streak (1996), Hello Rockview (1998), Borders & Boundaries (2000), Anthem (2003) and In With the Out Crowd (2006).

Recorded in their home state of Florida, the band played two nights each in St. Petersburg, Orlando and Jacksonville during the winter of 2007, capturing each of the shows in three different venues. A bonus DVD is included, with footage spanning the band’s touring career with clips dating as far back as the mid 90’s up to present day. Each concert DVD was recorded with high definition cameras and multi-tracked audio, and edited by band members Buddy Schaub and mixed by Roger Manganelli.

Less Than Jake show gets picketed by Westboro Baptist Church

Yes, folks, you read that headline right.

In a story that is sure to make the “Most Punk Rock Moments of 2011” list at year’s end, the Westboro Baptist Church has decided that God hates skanking. As such, the Kansas-based protest group saw fit to take their act on the road to Pensacola, Florida, to picket a gig by old school ska-punkers Less Than Jake.

In case you aren’t familiar with the WBC and don’t feel like Googling them (which, by the way, you should really do), they’ve made a name for themselves via their outspoken hatred of homosexuality, abortion, rock and roll music, devil worship and the military, though they tend to take their “God Hates Fags” signs gay rights events, military funerals and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial. In case you aren’t familiar with LTJ, well, you probably aren’t reading this site.

No real word on what it was about Less Than Jake that provoked the WBC, but to quote LTJ drummer Vinnie Fiorello, “it must have been a slow night at Bible study.” Read more of Vinnie’s comments here.

Less Than Jake are streaming a live version of their classic tune “All My Best Friends are Metalheads” off the DVD that will accompany their upcoming reissue of Hello Rockview. It was recorded during a show in the band’s home state of Florida.

Tour: Less Than Jake hits the UK with We Are The Union

Ska-Punk legends Less Than Jake have announced a string of tour dates that will bring them to the UK with the band We Are The Union. You might recall a story we posted last month about We Are The Union and their run-in with a moose that totaled their van but they are reporting all is well with the band now.

It’s been reported that Less Than Jake will be playing their album “Losing Streak” in it’s entirety at next months Riot Fest but no word if they will be playing it on this tour.

Less Than Jake will be releasing their newest EP entitled “TV/EP” on October 12th through Sleep It Off Records which will consist of television theme songs and jingles. Hmm, ok.

You can check out the tour dates here.

Less Than Jake to play all of “Losing Streak” at next month’s Riot Fest

Gainesville, FL, ska band Less Than Jake has announced that their appearance at next month’s Riot Fest in Chicago will include all of the songs from their 1996 album Losing Streak. There are some great songs on that album, too – 9th & Pine, Johnny Quest, How’s My Driving, Jen Doesn’t Like Me Anymore…..I could go on, but I bet you love it too.

One big question remains, though: Will there be an appearance by Howard J. Reynolds?!? He’s “the old dude” who introduces the band before Automatic kicks off on Losing Streak. Guess we’ll have to wait until October 9 to find out. More on Riot Fest here.

Less Than Jake releasing new EP “TV/EP”

Less Than Jake have announced that they are going to be releasing a new EP titled “TV/EP” that will feature 16 jingles in 13 minutes. And when we say “jingles” we mean jingles.  The songs will all be covers of television theme songs and commercials.

According to the band’s website:

Spanning from the vintage adverts of yesteryear to the frenetic promos of modern day, TV/EP reimagines a world where pop punk and ska is the music de rigueur, and this is the soundtrack to your couch potato life. Tracklisted as anonymously numbered channels (the band is keeping the names of the songs under wraps till right before release), the experience they have planned is akin to the feeling of flipping random television channels.

It will be released on October 12th through Sleep It Off Records.

Why did they choose the name Less Than Jake?

lessthanjakeEver wonder where some bands come up with their band names?  Well, we do, and we’re sick of sitting around scratching our heads about it.  We’re hitting the streets (aka. “Internet”) to find the origins behind some of the more bizarre, intriguing or just plain random band names in the scene.  Every Wednesday we’ll be pulling the curtain back on a different band and this week it’s Gainesville’s legendary ska-punk icons Less Than Jake.

According to somebody operating the band’s MySpace page, the name Less Than Jake comes from drummer Vinnie Fiorello’s parents’ dog, Jake.  As the story goes, this dog was treated better than all the family members living in Vinnie’s home and thus the term “Less Than Jake” was born to describe the status of the rest of the household.  Eventually the guys decided it would make a good band name and Voila! – a band is born.  Just think, if that dog had been given a different name we’d all be listening to ska-punk anthems from Gainesville’s “Less Than Spot”…
