Video: Tom Gabel discusses gender dysphoria with Brendan Kelly in 2010 interview

In case you’ve been living under a rock this week, Against Me! lead singer/guitarist Tom Gabel recently came out as transgendered and has opened up about her life experiences with gender dysphoria and identity confusion. You can read the full interview with Gabel (who plans to be known as Laura Jane Grace) in this week’s issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

This has caused many fans to take a harder look at some of the band’s lyrics, especially songs like “The Ocean” off of 2007’s New Wave and “Searching For A Former Clarity” from the album of the same name. Here’s a video of Lawrence Arms frontman Brendan Kelly addressing that topic with Gabel and lead guitarist James Bowman in a 2010 interview, a few weeks after the release of their album White Crosses. You can watch the interview over here.

Against Me! will continue making music

When Against Me! vocalist Tom Gabel revealed her transgender status and plan to transition to a life as Laura Jane Grace, many fans asked what would happen to the band.

According to the full Rolling Stone interview, the band will continue. In the article, she says:

“However fierce our band was in the past, imagine me, six-foot-two, in heels, f—ing screaming into someone’s face.”

The interview is in the newest issue of Rolling Stone, which hits newsstands today. Against Me! released their last album, the double disc “White Crosses/Black Crosses” last year on August 9th through their own new label, Total Treble Music.

Tom Gabel (Against Me!) comes out as transgender

According to a current story on the Rolling Stone website, Against Me! guitarist/vocalist Tom Gabel has come out of the closet as transgender. In the story, Gabel states that she has “dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years,” and will soon begin the process of transition.

Gabel adds that she’ll eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace, and (best of all) that her marriage with her wife Heather will remain intact. To read more about Gabel’s decision, check out the article itself right here; though it’s really just a teaser to a full interview that’ll appear in the issue of Rolling Stone that is set to hit newstands this Friday. We’ll post it as soon as it’s available.

“It feels good to finally shake hands and put a complicated past behind us,” said Rose. “When Tom approached me about recording a song together, I knew it would be a great way to show the world that petty fights amongst musicians just aren’t worth it.”

Rose declined to comment on past allegations of participating in voodoo practice against the band.

The song will be released on December 21st of this year, but you can view some photos of the band and Axl in the studio here.

Overdubs were recorded in New York City in 2010 and provided by Joan Jett, Steven Van Zandt from the E Street Band, Richie Ramone and members of Cheap Trick.

Johnny Ramone memoirs to be published as posthumous autobiography

8 years after his death, punk rock icon Johnny Ramone will have his memoirs published as a posthumous biography. The book will feature a forward by bandmate Tommy Ramone, the only remaining original member of the band, and an epilogue by Lisa Marie Presley.

According to Ramone’s wife Linda, the book was originally planned to be a collection of friends writing their own memories of Johnny, but she made the decision to only include her husband’s work: the memoirs he began writing when diagnosed with cancer.

“It didn’t make Johnny Ramone’s book more powerful by having other people in the book talking about him,” she said. “This is nobody else’s story. This is Johnny Ramone’s story, talking about Johnny Ramone.”

He continued to write through even the worst of his chemotherapy treatments, according to Linda. (For more comments on the book’s production, head over here.

Johnny passed away in 2004 at the age of 55 after a five-year battle with prostate cancer. The book is set to be released on April 2nd via Abrams Books.
