Weezer to play Wisconsin’s SoundTown festival in July

Weezer announced via their Facebook page that they’ll be performing at the SoundTown festival in Somerset, WI, this summer. The music and camping festival will take place July 27-28 and tickets go on sale April 28.

The guys will be joined onstage by a lot of non-punk (though still pretty good if you’re into that sort of thing) acts like Jane’s Addiction, Florence and the Machine, Andrew Bird, Girl Talk and Best Coast. Check out the full line-up here.

The band last released “Hurley” in 2010 on Epitaph Records.

Mikey Welsh (former Weezer bassist) found dead

Well this is sort of a downer.  Mikey Welsh, the bassist for Weezer between 1998 and 2001, was found dead in his Chicago hotel room Saturday afternoon.  Welsh originally left the band after suffering a nervous breakdown but then found moderate success as a “visual” artist/painter.  He remained on friendly terms with his former band mates and was in fact in Chicago to meet up with them while they were there to play Riot Fest.

Foul play has been ruled out, though narcotics are suspected to have played a role in Welsh’s death (autopsy results have yet to be released).

Weezer gave an official statement on their website today:

“A unique talent, a deeply loving friend and father, and a great artist is gone, but we will never forget him. His chapter in the weezer story (’98 – ’01) was vital, essential, wild, and amazing.”

You can read the entire statement here.

Weezer posts new demo snippet

Weezer posted a little quickie to their site yesterday. It’s a teaser snippet of a demo they’re recording. It’s pretty short, not really enough to tell what the whole song will be, but there are definitely a couple of Weezer’s telltale “whoa-oh” sounds in there.

Check it out here.

The band released “Hurley” last year on Epitaph Records.

Rivers Cuomo (Weezer) covers “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys

Weezer frontman, Rivers Cuomo, did a cover of “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys.  It’s done solo, at the piano, and might not be very “punk rock” but its a slow as hell news day and I grew up listening to The Beach Boys and then Weezer so you’re gonna watch it and you’re gonna like it, damnit!

Check it out right here.

Weezer offered a whopping $10 million…

…to disband.

I find this absolutely hilarious. Whether or not you like this band, this is a truly entertaining story. Apparently, a group of people (henceforth referred to as “haters”) were so disappointed by Weezer‘s latest release that they are getting together to raise $10,000,000 to put an end to this Los Angeles rock band. The haters have this to say:

I have never been a fan of this band. I think that they are pretty much horrible, and always have been. Even in the early 90’s.But this isn’t about me. This is about the Weezer fans. They are our brothers and sisters, our friends, our lovers.Every year, Rivers Cuomo swears that he’s changed, and that their new album is the best thing that he’s done since “Pinkerton,” and what happens? Another pile of crap like “Beverly Hills” or “I’m Your Daddy.”This is an abusive relationship, and it needs to stop now.

Looks like someone is not getting enough Justin Bieber on the music charts.

I am tired of my friends being disappointed year after year.I am tired of endless whimsical cutesy album covers and music videos.I’m sick of hearing about whatever this terrible (and yes, even if you like the early stuff, you should be able to admit that they are wretched now) excuse for a band is up to these days.If all 852,000 of you (really?) who bought “Pinkerton” pitch in $12, we will meet our goal.I beg you, Weezer. Take our money and disappear

I think this is a win-win situation for Weezer. Either they don’t agree to this and continue to make their millions playing music, or they get $10 mil to do nothing! If I were them, I’d “disband”, collect my $10 mil, and then “come back” under a new name: “Rezeew” (Weezer backwards).

Anybody else find the absurd humor in this?

***UPDATE***

Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson tweeted “if they can make it 20, we’ll do the ‘deluxe breakup’!”
