DS Photo Gallery & Show Review: Propagandhi, The Flatliners, & War on Women in Los Angeles (2/23/14)

The. Legends. This past weekend, I attended the last show of Propagandhi’s west coast run at The Echoplex in Los Angeles, CA. This was the first time I saw them live and I can honestly say they not only lived up to expectations, but they also surpassed them. As if seeing Propagandhi wasn’t enough for our Sunday night, we were also treated to fantastic sets by The Flatliners and War on Women.

War on Women opened the show. I had not listened to them too much beforehand, but I was blown away by the live show. I love music, but lack any actual musical talent, so I really love seeing women in punk bands (and I may try to vicariously live through them). Their set was non-stop energy and it filled the room. Despite a few hecklers who obviously did not understand the message of the band, the crowd seems enthusiastic to check out this new talent. Major props to the band for calling out the sexist and harassing comments that were being yelled from a few members of the crowd – it only made the message of the music stronger (and hecklers – do yourself a favor and educate yourself on the bands you are coming to see – I’m sure Propagandhi would not have tolerated your comments either). If you have not had a chance to check them out yet, follow my lead and listen to them nonstop on your music player of choice. The are definitely an up and coming band to watch.

The Flatliners were up next. I recently saw them down in Fullerton, and they always put on a great show. Dead Language was one of my favorite albums from 2013 and it is awesome to hear songs like “Caskets Full,” “Drown in Blood,” and “Resuscitation of the Year” live (but no “Sew My Mouth Shut” – wishful thinking!). The Flatliners have lots of raw energy on stage and rip through their set with power and confidence. They were a great tour pairing with a band like Propagandhi.

During the set change, you could feel the excitement building in the crowd. Once Propagandhi hit the stage, there was no turning back. The crowd shouted along as the band ripped through a setlist that included a significant amount of tracks from their last album, 2012’s Failed States (including “Lotus Gait,” “Note to Self” and the title track) and a brand new song (check out a video of this new track from the Pomona date here).  The band’s hour long set of energy, empowerment, and a call to action closed with “Back to the Motor League” and “Stick the Fucking Flag Up Your Goddam Ass, You Sonofabitch.” As expected, Propagandhi killed it and it was everything the crowd hoped for and more. Let’s hope it’s not years before another west coast run. Check out the photo gallery from the Echoplex in LA below.

Random Cover Song: The Flatliners – “Maximum Piss and Vinegar” (Dillinger Four)

Cover songs are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. We here at Dying Scene love hearing punk bands do their own take on other band’s songs. Sometimes they pull off amazing interpretations of old classics, sometimes they’re not much more than humble tributes to a fellow artist, and other times they’re just downright laughable renditions of otherwise great songs. Good or bad. Intriguing or mundane. We’ll let you be the judge.

Today’s cover comes from The Flatliners covering Dillinger Four‘s “Maximum Piss and Vinegar”. The original is taken from Dillinger Four’s 2000 album Versus God, while The Flatliners’ acoustic cover comes from the PV Undercover compilation.

You can listen to both versions of “Maximum Piss and Vinegar” below.
