DS Photo Gallery & Show Review: Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and Bad Cop/Bad Cop in Hollywood (3/18/14)

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are one of the only bands I know who consistently bring so much joy to the stage. Last week, I was able to see the Gimmes at the House of Blues in Hollywood, California – and if this show was any indication, their new album will. be. amazing.

Opening for The Gimmes was fellow Fat Wreck band Bad Cop/Bad Cop, who absolutely killed it. I hadn’t really listened to them before this night, but I was completely enamored by their catchy songs and powerful musicality (and the lead singer, Stacey Dee, reminds me of a young Joan Jett). I picked up one of their EPs at the show and the new release is set to drop April 1st. I highly recommend you check them out – and if you are lucky enough to be going to Punk Rock Bowling this year, you will have a chance!

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes continue to amaze me every time I see them live. The last time I saw them was two days after Tony Sly passed away, and it was a rather somber affair (yet I feel as though it was a therapeutic place to be for both the band and the crowd). This time, however, their excitement and humor shone through and it was like a big house party on a Tuesday night. As they are always so polite to point out, they did a set of covers (a running joke throughout the night), including a few tracks off of their upcoming album Are We Not Men? We Are DIVA!, which will be out May 13th (“Straight Up,” and “I Will Survive” being my personal favorites). The set also consisted of fan favorites “Sloop John B,” “I Believe I Can Fly,” “Leaving On a Jet Plane,” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” as well as a teaser off of Spike’s upcoming ukelele album. I never thought I would see a circle pit to Paula Abdul, but it happened.

Between the stylish (and matching) ensembles, the friendly banter and frequent hugs on stage, and a set that made the sold-out crowd sing and dance along, the Gimmes proved why they are one of the best supergroups in punk. Their shows always seem to go by too quickly, but as you walk out of the venue, you should just start the countdown until you will see them again – because it’s always worth it.
