Punk Rock Bowling: Backyard show with PEARS, Vampirates, Jason Guy Smiley

Every year, Punk Rock Bowling is full of kick-ass shows, from the festival, to the club shows, to pool parties, and previously-unannounced shows, some official PRB events, some not. But for me, one of the best parts of the weekend is a meetup with friends from across the country at the Fat Wreck Wiki BBQ. This is one of the non-official PRB events, but it was also one of the best shows of the weekend, featuring PEARS, Vampirates, and Jason Guy Smiley.

Special thanks to the gracious host, Mikee, who made the whole thing possible, the fine folks at Clearview Records, Fat Wreck Chords, and of course, the bands who took the time to play for a bunch of punks and record nerds. Check out the full gallery below.

Fat Wreck Chords announce “Fat Music Vol. 8: Going Nowhere Fat”

Fat Wreck Chords have announced the eighth volume in their ever-popular Fat Music compilation series. The label is celebrating its 25th anniversary, so in honor of that, they are releasing Fat Music Vol. 8: Going Nowhere Fat, which will feature 25 (a number in honor of their anniversary) new and unreleased tracks from the label’s roster, including NOFXLagwagonMasked Intruder, and the newly signed PEARS. Check out the tracklisting below.

2015 marks Fat Wreck Chords’ 25th anniversary as a label and nothing seemed more appropriate than bringing back the Fat Music series. With classic comps like Survival of the Fattest, Physical Fatness and Live Fat, Die Young, this is a series that’s less about acting as a label sampler as it is about compiling great, listenable punk albums, loaded with gems from front to back. It’s been five years since we added a volume to the series and with a grip of new bands and new groundbreaking records from classic Fat bands, our 25th anniversary year was the obvious choice for Volume 8. Packed with an appropriate 25 songs, selected and sequenced by Fat Mike, Fat Music Vol. 8: Going Nowhere Fat is the next essential Fat comp. And as you’ve come to expect, you get a handful of brand new and unreleased tunes, this time from NOFX, Swingin’ Utters, Leftover Crack, Western Addiction, Night Birds and PEARS. The comp will be released on August 7th and will be available for pre-order soon! If you haven’t grabbed a ticket to the Fat Wrecked for 25 Years tour, you can do so now!

Fat Music Vol. 8: Going Nowhere Fat will be released on August 7, and is the first in the Fat Music series since 2010’s Fat Music Vol. 7: Harder, Fatter + Louder!

DS Photo Gallery: Teenage Bottlerocket & PEARS at Local 662 in St. Pete, FL

It had been over a year since I last broke out my camera and made my way down to St. Pete to cover a show for Dying Scene, but when I heard Teenage Bottlerocket and PEARS were coming to town, I just knew I had to dust off the ol’ camera and pretend to be an actual photographer once again. And I’m sure glad I did, because this was one hell of a show.

PEARS blasted through roughly a dozen songs with ferocious speed, taking very few breaks along the way. And though there were quite a few people who weren’t familiar the New Orleans hardcore punk act, it wasn’t long before everyone in the room became hooked on PEARS.

To put it as simply as possible, these guys are natural performers. They write great songs that sound awesome on the record, and sound even more awesome live. There aren’t too many bands who can put on a show with as much intensity as this 4-piece.

But luckily for me and everyone else in attendance, Teenage Bottlerocket is one of those bands. The Wyoming pop-punk veterans played an hour-long set of fan favorites like “Skate or Die,” “So Far Away,” “Bigger Than Kiss,” “Radio,” and “Stupid Games,” as well as a handful of songs from their brand new record Tales From Wyoming.

Usually when I see a band after they have just released a new album, there aren’t too many people who know the songs, which leads to a lot of blank stares/cell phone checking, and not a lot of singing, dancing, or just having fun.

That was not the case with Teenage Bottlerocket. The level of excitement while they played new tracks like “Dead Saturday,” “Nothing Else Matters (When I’m With You),” “Haunted House,” and “TV Set” was just as high as it was during the old fan favorites. A true testament to this band’s ability to continually write awesome music.

Teenage Bottlerocket and PEARS will be playing shows all across the south over the course of the next week. I highly recommend heading over here to see if the two bands are stopping near you, because it would be a shame if you missed such a great show!

All my shots from the show at the Local 662 in St. Pete can be seen below.
