DS Photo Gallery and Show Review: The Gaslight Anthem at Boston Calling

Though the lineup for the debut of the Boston Calling Festival in May 2013 left a little (okay, a lot) to be desired for the tastes of this particular writer, the concept of bringing a live, two-day music festival to the architectural cesspool that is Boston’s City Hall Plaza was a welcome one. For the non-New Englanders among us, the area is a barren, steaming brick-and-concrete turd located adjacent to a number of otherwise vibrant areas, and has been criminally under-utilized over the years, a literal eyesore for the forty-five years since it opened. So while the likes of Fun. and Of Monsters And Men and Ra Ra Riot may not have been particularly inspiring to this area native, at least it was a sign of hope that perhaps the 2014 edition might be promising.

Based on the overwhelming success of the first Boston Calling festival, the sophomore edition was announced not for 2014, but for September 7-8 of this year, a scant 3.5 months after Memorial Day weekend inception. Featuring the likes of Solange and Kendrick Lamar and something called Bearstronaut, the September lineup may have been more underwhelming to this writer than even the May edition was, though it did feature a personal favorite: The Gaslight Anthem.

The Jersey quintet (I feel like it’s fair to call Ian Perkins a member of the band at this point) took the stage during the waning, dusky, late summer sunlight that epitomizes late Summer in New England. Sandwiched in between California indie rock band Local Natives and critical darlings (and show headliners) Vampire Weekend, providing  a much-needed grittier break between what seemed an alarming amount of synth and ironic mustaches.

The band’s 90-minute set, increasingly rare for an outdoor festival setting but nonetheless welcome to the legions of loyal fans that crowded the front of the stage well in advance of the 7:30 start time, was bookended by the title tracks from the last two albums: “Handwritten” to open and “American Slang” to close. The seventeen songs in between focused primarily on the last three albums (Sink Or Swim went unrepresented), with “Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts,” the relatively-brand-new “Halloween” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Changing of the Guards” serving to break up a setlist that was otherwise geared toward the larger, more diverse crowd (though noticeably absent was perhaps the band’s biggest breakthrough hit, 2008’s “The ’59 Sound”).

Punk music is traditionally, or at least stereotypically, best served in sweaty basements and dive bars. While the band remain true to their roots, what is becoming more prevalent over time is just how deep and broad those roots go. The uptempo grit of the Bouncing Souls and Hot Water Music infuse the band with energy night in and night out. The bluesy soul of Petty and Orbison allow the band to take musical chances, while the the arena-honed chops of Eddie Vedder and company allow the band to translate the sound to the masses. Though still claimed as ‘one of our own’ by many who grew up in the alternative/punk crossover period of the middle-90s, The Gaslight Anthem appeared to feel right at home commanding the crowd that ran many thousands deep well into the night.

Brian Fallon to produce new Twopointeight album

Brian Fallon is by no means giving up his day job as frontman for Jersey rockers The Gaslight Anthem, but he is taking his talents to the other side of the soundboard for the first time.

Fallon is slated to produce the forthcoming album from Swedish punk band Twopointeight. Here’s what Fallon had to say about the project: “Twopointeight is one of those bands people absolutely have to hear and see. These guys write songs in a way only few bands can and I’m honored to be doing this project.

Twopointeight will head to New Jersey for the session, which will also feature production credits from The Bouncing Souls’ Pete Steinkopf. The album, tentatively called “Twopointeight III,” will hopefully be ready for an early 2014 release via I Scream Records.

The Gaslight Anthem and The Scandals stream acoustic split

Well this sorta feels like it came out of nowhere.  Frontmen, Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem and Jared Hart of The Scandals, recently hit a Manhattan recording studio to record five-song acoustic split exclusively for Red Bull Sound Select.

Fallon recorded brand-new stripped down versions of ‘Handwritten,’ ‘She Loves You’ and ’45,’ while Hart added never-before-heard acoustic renditions of ‘All Nighters’ and ‘Sirens.’  You can stream the recordings here but the catch is you have to register for an account (worth it).

Both The Gaslight Anthem and The Scandals perform on July 27 at the Red Bull Sound Select show at New York City’s Irving Plaza. They will be joined by Dave Hause and Red Bull Sound Select artist Frances and the Foundation.

The Gaslight Anthem to release new album next year

The Gaslight Anthem have announced that they will release a new album next year. Here’s what they had say:

Working on new songs for a new Gaslight Anthem album in 2014.   Dig it. Tour’s been great, Brian’s very pleased he hasn’t has many photos of him taken.  He’s busy in the back of the bus writing new songs, something about Bob Dylan and Led Zepplin and Neil Young in the same band.  We don’t know what he’s on about.  We’ll leave him be for now… We haven’t seen him in anything but sunglasses for the last three days.  At least Ray Ban is very pleased. More to come, this will updated WAY more frequently now that we’ve stolen it from Brian.  Though he may arise from his tomb of 60’s and 70’s records and write something odd here.  Right On. —XXX TGA

Brian Fallon posts an update on his solo album

Brian Fallon, the lead singer and guitarist of The Gaslight Anthem, has posted an update in regards to his anticipated solo album, which is supposed to be out this year and the musical direction is said to be a departure from his work with The Gaslight Anthem and The Horrible Crowes. He writes:

“What I’m working on I’d classify as Americana. It’s not from New Jersey, it’s not The Gaslight Anthem, in fact, it’s not even mine, but it’s ours… I’m looking to the people who used folk and country music as a tradition and took what was past and moved forward. Wilco, Ryan Adams, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, the Highwaymen, Bob Dylan, etc… I’m not writing about straw hats and gin joints. I’m not writing about nostalgia or a time I wasn’t born it. I’m writing about the last two years of my life since we wrote Handwritten. This project is going to be based on things I learned early on musically, which were my mother’s folk songs. We also listened to a lot of early country. I’d like to write my years down.”

The Gaslight Anthem released their last album, Handwritten, on Mercury Records in July. The band recently announced that they have been working on another album, but did not reveal a release date.
