Deryck Whibley posts original demo of Sum 41’s “Crash”

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley has posted the original demo of the band’s song “Crash” on his official website. Here’s what Whibley had to say about the track, which ended up appearing on the band’s 2011 album Screaming Bloody Murder:

“I was going through my old cassette tapes of ideas today and i came across the original demo of the song “crash”. This recording was made about an hour after i witnessed a horrible car crash where one of the drivers was killed instantly. It all happened right before my eyes. I was the first one there and jumped out of my car immediately trying to help but i could feel the lifelessness in the air, you could just tell he was dead and there was nothing i could do. I’ve seen a few people die in front of me in my life and it’s definitely a bizarre moment to see the life being taken out of someone. I went home and wrote this song in minutes and recorded this version. And now, after everything i’ve been through recently this song holds new meaning for me. It’s not much different than the album but i like this version because i remember exactly how i felt when i was putting it down. I used to have this big open room with a nice grand piano. I would love to come down in the mornings and play for awhile as i was waking up. The room had really high ceilings and gave off this great natural reverb. It felt like being in a big concert hall. It was almost a haunting sound in that room. It made you feel very alone. And i don’t think i could have written crash if it didn’t sound like that.”

According to recent reports, there’s a new Sum 41 album in the works! The band’s also auditioning a replacement for longtime drummer Stevo, who left the band a year ago.

Deryck Whibley (Sum 41) is currently writing new music

Deryck Whibley (Sum 41) has apparently been writing new music, after his recent hospital visit.  This news comes by way of a recent update from Deryck:

“night out for dinner with my two special ladies. my mum michelle and my fiancé ariana.

we had an amazing dinner with a few friends the other night and it was the first time I have gotten to go out for a fun night since i was released from the hospital.

I also had a little jam session at my house earlier in the day and it was so fun to play some of the old songs again. it gives me inspiration to write songs again along with the touring itch. right now i’m having my studio worked on because theres are a few things in there that aren’t working right (ah,the joys of having your own studio.), but after today it should be back and rocking. I got some good writing done today and i can’t wait to get it all down and recorded.

I hope that you are all doing well and staying safe.

i’ll keep you posted,

deryck”
