Nick Diener (The Swellers) posts No Use For A Name cover in memory of Tony Sly

Punk fans and artists were stunned yesterday to learn that Tony Sly, front-man for long running punk act No Use For A Name, died at age 41.

In his honor, The Swellers vocalist Nick Diener released a video of himself covering the NUFAN song “International You Day.” Check it out here.

Details on Sly’s passing are still sparse, but when we hear more we’ll let you know.



Andy Mrotek (ex-The Academy Is…) gets jumped, needs surgery

Andy Mrotek, former drummer for The Academy Is (who called it a day last fall), was jumped and smashed with a vase last night while walking in Chicago, and will need plastic surgery to fix up his face. Check out his tweets (with photos of his injuries) here and here.

 



VersaEmerge to release preview EP of upcoming album “Another Atmosphere” July 31st

VersaEmerge announced back in February that they would be recording their new album.  The new album, titled “Another Atmosphere,” will be released most likely sometime in the fall.  A preview EP of the same title will be released via Fueled By Ramen on July 31st.  To view the tracklisting of the EP and listen to the song “No Consequences,” click here.

Video: Rome Ramirez (Sublime With Rome) plays acoustic version of “Oz Of Love”

After a tour of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ stadium, Rome Ramirez of Sublime With Rome fame recorded an acoustic version of “Oz of Love”.  The song is off Rome’s Dedication EP, released in June by Fueled By Ramen Records.  Check out the video of his performance here.

William Beckett, formerly of The Academy Is…, is streaming another new song called “Scarlett (Tokyo).” You can listen to the song here.

Beckett released his debut solo LP “Walk the Talk” in April.



The Swellers announce 10 year anniversary show

Michigan punk act The Swellers have just announced details on their upcoming 10 year anniversary show. The show will take place August 3rd in Flint, MI and will feature Pentimento and Making Friends. Check out the flyer for the show here.

The Swellers last released their “Vehicle City Blues” 7″, on May 29th via SideOneDummy. They released their last full-length album, “Good For Me,” last June on Fueled By Ramen and are currently recording a new EP.

The Swellers recording new EP

Michigan punk act The Swellers announced in a recent interview that they are recording a new EP. Here’s what they had to say:

We are putting out a new EP. We started recording it a couple days ago. The cool part about it is that we’re recording it and putting it out ourselves. I’m going to be engineering and producing it and Mark Michalik, who did [the End Of Discussion EP], My Everest and Ups And Downsizing, has been helping out with additional engineering and editing and stuff like that. We’re kind of going back to how we used to do things when it was really stress free and being in control of our music in the aspect of recording it and putting it out. We’re in control of every aspect.

Music Video: Cobra Starship – “#1 Nite (feat. My Name is Kay)”

Pop punkers-turned dance rockers Cobra Starship have released a  music video for their song “#1Nite” featuring a guest appearance by Canadian singer/songwriter My Name is Kay. As to be expected from Cobra Starship these days, it’s much more Britney Spears than it is Midtown.

The Cab begin working on new album

According to a recent tweet from Las Vegas rock act, The Cab‘s frontman, Alex DeLeon, the band is currently writing/working on a brand new album.

Just wrote the sickest jackson 5-esque bass line. This new @TheCab record is going to be the most fun to date. Very different yet the same.

The band last released “Symphony Soldiers” in August 2011 via Fueled By Ramen. We’ll keep you posted as more details on the band’s upcoming album surface.
