Album Review: Coffee Project – ‘Wasted Love’

If you’re not familiar with Coffee Project, let me give you a quick introduction. The duo hail from Gainesville and include Buddy from Less Than Jake and Jake who used to be in Rehasher. Imagine catchy and fast pop punk on an acoustic guitar, then add a trombone. Then imagine that every terrible band you’ve ever heard try something like this wasn’t terrible and were actually awesome. That’s basically Coffee Project. Their bandcamp says they “play upbeat catchy singalong acoustic songs that feel more like a punk rock show and less like a coffee shop gig” and that description is pretty accurate it seems.

That said, Coffee Project is truly one my favorite bands I feel I don’t hear enough from. Their new 7”, Wasted Love, which is out now on A-F Records (the label owned by Anti-Flag) comes off as a simple break up record upon seeing the artwork and hearing the title track. But I’m not sure that’s a fair analysis.

See, what I like about this record is that it reflects a breakup from multiple angles, not just the direct heartbreak and sad songs. It talks about frustration with social media, handling anxiety, and how the rest of the world may be perceived from someone who has just lost love, not just one’s inner feelings of grief.

It’s not my favorite thing the band has ever done, but there’s not a ton for me to analyze with only four short songs. They do a good job, as usual, of combining folk elements with punk energy without sounding like a typical folk punk band. It doesn’t feel like a release I can compare to their others, it just sounds like a continuation of what Coffee Project does.

Regardless, I’m going to give this a 3.5/5, (can I give them a 75%? C?) but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. I just wish it was longer and I had more to digest.

Go see Coffee Project at Fest this year, you won’t regret it. Listen to Wasted Love below, and please consider supporting the band and label.

Coffee Project brew up video for “Wasted Love”

Acoustic punk duo Coffee Project, the side project featuring Buddy Schaub of Less Than Jake and Savage Brewtality’s Jake Crown, have made their video for “Wasted Love” available for your streaming pleasure. Check it out below.

Formed as an outlet for the two musicians to write and record songs that might not fit with their main projects, Coffee Project released their 1st EP Wasted Love on July 16th through A-F Records.

If ska-folk didn’t exist before, it does now. And, it sounds good…there’s an elemental quality to the stripped down production and bareness of the sound. Catch them at this year’s Fest.

Coffee Project throw in the towel; detail farewell album “Leftovers” and stream studio version of “Concrete Boots”

It’s a sad day for Coffee Project fans. The band has announced they will be throwing in the towel after their upcoming appearance at The Fest 11 in Gainesville, which is set to be the band’s last show ever. Before calling it quits, the band will release their last album, entitled “Leftovers.”

You can stream the studio version of “Concrete Boots,” which will be featured on the album, and check out all of the details surrounding the album here.

Here’s a statement from the band:
“Just like all of our previous records, Leftovers was recorded at Buddy’s home studio. Buddy is the engineer, we are the producers, and Stephen Egerton (yes, the guitarist from my favorite punk band) mastered the songs. With no pressure of deadlines, we had a rad time recording these songs. We would just hook up after I got off of work, or when Buddy was home from Less Than Jake tours. We brought in the wonderful Kim Helm (Whiskey & Co.) to sing on some songs. She is a huge part of Coffee Project. The Greenland Is Melting guys came in and played on a song. Jon Gaunt played the fiddle on a tune. Lindsey Mills (local Gainesville amazing folk singer) sang on a song as well. We have been lucky enough to have people come and give their time to play on our records. All rad people.

As far as Coffee Project coming to an end, that’s a tough one to swallow. Everything that Coffee Project did just sort of “happened” organically. I never thought we would have made two full-lengths and a few EPs. They all just “happened.” I was thinking about this the other day, as far as the fact that I have put my life out there as much as I have. Its bizarre. At times it weirds me out, but I’m glad we did everything we did. Our show at this years FEST in Gainesville is going to be the last Coffee Project show. I think its good to have some closure on things. On the same token, if down the road we have an opportunity to play again, I’d love to.”

The band last released the “Concrete Boots” digital EP in 2011 via Paper + Plastick Records.

I imagine if they’d have played the song INSIDE the portable toilet the expanding nature of the trombone would have made the whole ordeal extremely dangerous.

The song is from the album “Moved On” which came out last June.
