The Exploited explain why they haven’t released an album in over 15 years

The Exploited frontman Wattie Buchan recently explained to Metal Underground why it’s taken so long for the band to release a follow-up to 2003’s Fuck the System. He says:

“We told the label six years ago that we had an album almost ready. We’ve got at least sixteen brilliant songs written, I just need to put lyrics to them, but with my health problems I’ve not been able to do it. We’ve got a couple of songs written but it’s hard to get us together once a week for practice because we all live far away and our guitarist and bassist have jobs. Hopefully with my health being better, we’ll try and get something done, but I’ll never do anything unless it’s a hundrsd percent. We could go into the studio tomorrow and I could throw out some some lyrics, but it wouldn’t be hundred percent and that would be exploiting the punks.”

Video: The Exploited singer suffers heart attack on stage, band cancels tour dates

Frankly, I’m almost surprised this doesn’t happen to more old school punk front men.  Last week Wattie Buchan, singer for long standing Scottish hardcore-punk act The Exploited, suffered a heart attack mid show in Lisbon, Portugal.  The 57 year old was rushed to the hospital directly from the venue and is thankfully recovering now.  You can check out the video below in which Buchan sinks to his knees mid song before the band apologizes to the crowd and ushers him off stage.

The Exploited had just recently announced a worldwide deal with Nuclear Blast Records, and are working on a new album for a late 2014 release.  Nuclear Blast made the official announcement that the band would have to cancel their upcoming tour dates with Hatebreed in the following statement:

“Punk-legends The Exploited are forced to cancel upcoming tour dates with label-mates Hatebreed and stop all activities till May 2014. Singer Wattie Buchan has suffered a heart attack on stage during the band’s concert last night (Thursday, February 13) in Lisbon, Portugal during the ‘Tour of Chaos’ with Hatebreed and Napalm Death.”

We’ll keep you posted on Wattie’s condition and let you know if and when the band decides to hit the road again.

The Exploited sign to Nuclear Blast Records, announce reissues, work on new album

British punk legends The Exploited have announced that they have signed a worldwide deal with Nuclear Blast Records, and are working on a new album for a late 2014 release. Nuclear Blast will also be re-releasing their last three albums (1990’s The Massacre, 1996’s Beat the Bastards and 2003’s Fuck the System) on March 17th, each with various bonus material. Frontman Wattie Buchan on the signing:

“At last, after giving my word four years ago that we would sign to Nuclear Blast, it’s now official! For us it’s a big deal to be signing to the biggest indie record company in Europe. One of the main reasons we signed to them is the fact that Markus, the owner, is a big Exploited fan and I know he will give us 100% backing to make the next album as great as the last ones. Ps. It WILL be this year sometime!!!!! Punks Not Dead”

Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger adds, “Having The Exploited sign a deal is a longtime dream coming true. In my youth I listened to Hardcore and Punk almost exclusively and The Exploited Have been one of my absolute favorites ever since. Records like ‘Punks Not Dead’, ‘Troops Of Tomorrow’ and later on also ‘Beat The Bastards’ and ‘Fuck The System’ have been on heavy rotation constantly.

The shows of this band have always been and still are a very special experience. Honest, hard and snotty – just like Punk should be. A true highlight for me of course was their performance at the Nuclear Blast HQs on my birthday in 2013. After that the deal has been set via handshakes and we’ve been celebrating till the break of dawn! Welcome to Nuclear Blast guys, Punks not dead!!”

The band released their latest album Fuck the System in 2003.
