Great Lakes, Fucko and more to play Planned Parenthood benefit in Bosotn

It’s no secret that the incoming Presidential administration spells more than just impending doom for a great number of  individuals, groups, and organizations across all walks of life. We’re only a little more than a week removed from the disastrous election results, and already a great number of punk bands and scene promoters have sprung into action to help raise funds and awareness in support of some of the causes that many of us hold near and dear to our hearts. As we here at Dying Scene get word of some of these benefits taking place in our respective communities, we’ll pass the message along!

Planned Parenthood, for example, is one organization that’s come into the Trump Administration’s crosshairs, what with his repeated statements about completely defunding the nonprofit reproductive health organization. Boston punks Great Lakes USA (pictured above) are teaming up with fellow Boston punks Fucko, one-man Brooklyn-based “campfire soul” act Yoni Gordon and somewhat difficult-to-label Planet of Adventure for a Planned Parenthood benefit show that’ll take place at Great Scott in Boston’s Allston neighborhood. Details of the show can be found here, and if you can’t make it out but you still want to help, you can donate to Planned Parenthood at this location!

Album Review: Great Lakes USA – “Live Fast, Die Whenever”

Great Lakes USA, based in Boston, have a fun, trashy Pop-punk sound in stark contrast to the retro Oi bands for which the area is mostly known.

The trio’s debut album, “Live Fast, Die Whenever”, features lots of warm, poppy hooks a la early Green Day but with a lot more thrash and grit. Billie Joe’s campy singing is replaced with vocalist/guitarist, Alex Heinz’s snotty growl. Heinz has a thick, shifty guitar sound and uses lots of heavy palm muting, but he can also turn on that melodic Ramones-style explosiveness and add some catchy solos when the band is going for a less abrasive sound on standout tracks such as Grown Up Stuff and LF, DW. Heinz’s unrefined, strained vocals follow suit on said tracks as he eases up on the gears and adds some softness and tone to his voice.

Pete Hoffman’s bass playing is straight up badass: lumbering, unrelenting bass lines with a metallic, raunchy tone. With his Mid EQ turned up to 11, his bass pierces the overall mix and shares equal footing with Heinz’s six-string.

Great Lakes USA is one of those rare punk bands that have a really good mix of Pop flavor and Hardcore rawness in its sound without leaning too far in one direction. Even when Heinz’s is screaming his guts out the music still sounds melodic and yet very dirty. Explosive, hook-laden & just fun.

Here’s what the label had to say about the upcoming work.

Great Lakes USA’s rough punk rock takes on a dominant and aggressive tone, as the group takes the next step forward from its Life’s Rough EP, which came out in May 2011. The track delivers a full, huge sound courtesy of producer Jay Maas (No Trigger, Defeater, Energy, The Stereo State), and is lead by the guitar work of vocalist/guitarist Alex Heinz. Accompanying the numerous reckless guitar solos and a wicked time change in the song at the 1:50 mark is a rock-solid performance from the Great Lakes USA rhythm section, bassist Pete Hoffman and drummer Myke Doyle. For a three-piece group, Great Lakes USA sure as hell knows how to make a ton of noise.

Live Fast, Die Whenever is the first release for the Allston, MA-based punk rockers via Black Numbers. You can see the album artwork to the left, and head here to take a look at the track list.
