Manchester Punk Festival 2019: Photographers’ Spotlight

This year’s Manchester Punk Festival was yet another sublime cacophony of smiles, sounds, and sozzles. As always, the organisers went above and beyond to make it an event to remember. The addition of even more styles of music, the addressing of previous years’ venue capacity issues, and the trial run of a new three-full-day format all enhanced what was already the obvious highlight of the UK festival calendar.

Rather than cover the event by way of endless stream of “and then I watched…., and they were good”, I thought it’d be great to shine a little light on some of the unsung heroes of festivals and live musical performance in general – the gig photographer. Seeing a wicked set of pictures can take you back to watching a band absolutely smash it or turn an idea of a punk rock road trip into a reality for next year. There’s always loads of great pictures of festivals too but it’s rare you get to see the work of (nearly) all the photographers in one place.

With that in mind I tracked down as many of the photographers covering Manchester Punk Festival as I possibly could; the idea being to showcase what they think to be their finest work from the event. Below, you’ll find their submissions, along with a few words from each about their experience of the festival and their work outside of documenting all things punk.

Melodic Punk Style Streams 27 Track Compilation, Feat. Chaser, I Against I, and Satanic Surfers

Amongst those featured on the collection are metal-edged UK shredders Fair Do’s; Slovenia’s finest, The Mor(r)ons; and California speed merchants, Chaser.

Manchester Punk Festival (UK) Streams Latest Pre-Fest Sampler

Historically, the kindly folks over at Manchester Punk Festival take great pleasure in showering you lovely lot with treats to get you in the mood for their event. This year is no exception.

The team behind the largest embrace of DIY punk culture ever known on UK shores has once again compiled a sampler of acts performing at the next edition of the festival. Manchester Punk Festival Vol. 20 features tunes from the likes of Fair Do’s, Big Joanie, Habits, Templeton Pek, Burning Flag, A Vulture Wake, and many, many others.

You can check out the entire compilation below. It’s “pay what you like” so make sure to chuck them some change for all the hard work they do for the national and international punk scene.

Manchester Punk Festival will be taking place over Easter weekend 2019 in the city of Manchester, UK. You can check out all the crucial details about tickets, lineup, accommodation, and everything else here.

Fair Do’s (Melodic Hardcore, UK) Announce 2019 Tour of Japan

Manchester-based genre straddlers Fair Do’s have just announced that they will tour Japan in the new year. The metal-edged skate punk onslaught will head east between the 9th and 14th of January, hitting up a total of six shows.

Arranging the entire fiasco is the always hardworking RNR Tours.

The frankly stunning tour poster artwork has been inspired by the quartet’s recently released debut full-length, Leopards, and was designed by Holly Dixon of Cat’s Cradle Tattoo Studio. I have on good authority that the beast depicted is known as a “Gundampard”.

You can check out all the dates below.

Fair Do’s (Melodic Hardcore, UK) Get Blasphemous in New Video “Candleman”

The Manchester-based genre-straddlers of Fair Do’s have just released a video for their track “Candleman”. The visuals are suitably seasonal for a Halloween premiere and feature the band fully corpse painted up, channelling their inner mosher. Notable cameos include Death and Bernie the dog.

“Candleman”, which you can stream below, appears on the first full-length release from Fair Do’s, Leopards. Copies of the album can picked up from Lockjaw Records now.

DS Exclusive: Fair Do’s (Melodic Hardcore, UK) Debut Full-Length “Leopards”

The long awaited debut album from the Manchester-based shred factory that is Fair Do’s comes out on Lockjaw Records tomorrow. However, the band have given DyingScene an exclusive stream of it before it drops.

Leopards will be available on both CD and a brilliantly garish magenta/yellow splatter vinyl. You an order both from Lockjaw Records at this link.

Vocalist and guitarist of Fair Do’s, Danny Cummings, had the following to say about the record:

“We spent a lot of time on demoing and pre-production for this album, we wanted to have everything nailed down before we went into the studio… Essentially, we spent two years writing, 18 months recording, and six months organising the release – with some touring in between.”

Leopards was produced, engineered, and mixed by Dave Boothroyd at Reel Recording Studio in York. Mastering duties were taken care of by Daryl Phenneger of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Danny commented on the recording process:

“We’ve worked with Dave in the past and he is an absolute master of his art. He knew exactly what we wanted and exactly how to deliver it. We couldn’t be happier! If you’re recording an album and want it clean, loud, crisp and popping, then talk to these guys.”

The album itself is a less-than-subtle fusion of melodic hardcore and metal, which showcases some of the best musicianship in punk rock today. If you’re a fan of fast, shouty noise with pointy metallic edges, Leopards is going to be right up your street.

Check it out before anyone else below!

Manchester Punk Fest (UK) team release new compilation

Ok, so it’s already April and with Manchester Punk Festival right around the corner you’d be forgiven for thinking that the team behind one of the UK’s biggest dedicated punk rock festivals would be a little lazy on the monthly compilation front. This is far from the case, however, and April sees the eighth and final installment available online. Featuring the likes of Fair Do’s, LuvDump and Faintest Idea the collection of tracks is guaranteed to get you psyched and should provide perfect accompaniment to the car/train journey come the 21st.
