DS Staff Picks: Gina Skidz’s Top 10 Albums of 2016

Well, 2016 hasn’t exactly been a stellar year for me.  I got laid off in a totally anticlimactic but still horrifying manner, and not having a commute meant not listening to as much music as I normally do.  When I started this list, I thought I’d have trouble coming up with a Top 10.  I was shooting for a Top 5 or so, when I realized I had made it to 14 awesome albums before I even paused to count. That’s the beauty of working for Dying Scene–I’m so lucky to get to write about awesome new bands and I constantly discover new favorites.  There were a lot of great albums this year from the bigger names in the scene (Brian Fallon’s Painkillers and The Interrupters’ Say It Out Loud particularly rocked my world), so I tried to focus on some of the ones you may not have heard of, in no particular order because they’re all awesome.

Check out my list below.

The Kenneths release lyric video for “New Bad Habit”

British punks The Kenneths have a new lyric video out for their song “New Bad Habit” and you can watch it below.

Here’s what the band said about how the video came to light,

We gave out a bunch of temporary tattoos on tour throughout 2015,” says Kenneths vocalist and guitarist Josh W, “The tattoos all had different lines to the song. Then fans uploaded them to Instagram, we printed them off, and hey presto a lyric video made of polaroids! It’s pretty awesome to put our fans in the video, especially when trying to apply a tattoo in the middle of the desert on Warped Tour is a lot harder than it looks!

“New Bad Habit” appeared on the band’s new EP, “E”, which came out last summer.

DS Staff Picks – Gina Skidz’s Top 10 of 2015

Another year-end is upon us! As we prepare ourselves to deal with family, long lines and fistfights over parking spaces (wait…does that just happen in Boston?!), let’s blow off some steam with some of the most badass punk albums of 2015.  I think I missed the deadline for both 2013 and 2014, so this is my first Top 10 List since I’ve been on staff at Dying Scene.  A few caveats to my list:

1. I tried my best to stay away from the major albums of 2015.  While there were some really good ones, my intent was to highlight some awesome up-and-comers.

2. I did include EPs as well as albums.  Some were just too damn good to pass up, and I couldn’t resist.

3.  They are in no particular order.  Comparing two totally different genres or calling an EP better than an album just seemed nonsensical to me (or maybe I was being lazy?).  Hey, it’s punk rock–no rules!

Keep reading to see my Top 10 of 2015, in no particular order.

The Kenneths’ vocalist and guitar player Josh Weller had this to say about the video:

“We wanted to have a house party and film it for the video. As a joke I said, ‘And at the end of the party The Kenneths turn into vampires and kill everyone!’ So that’s what we did! I actually sliced my finger open while I was covered in fake blood. I thought a meat cleaver was a prop. It wasn’t. I had to superglue my finger shut on the set. I didn’t faint, which kind of makes me an awesome vampire, right?”

The song can also be found on the band’s new EP, E, which came out earlier this summer.

“‘E’ is our 2nd E.P in four months. All we care about is playing live, and we really captured that with this E.P. The songs are super raw and bouncy, we tried to cut out all of the fat,” notes vocalist and guitarist Joshua Weller. “Everything you hear is live. We’re a live band so the main goal was to try and capture the energy and explosiveness of the live shows. We even got people to sit in the room while we were recording to make it feel more like a show,” added bassist Lewis Maynard.

The band is also streaming a song from the album titled “Cool As You,” which can be heard below as well.

The Kenneths released their last EP, It’s the Kenneths, only this past February. Pre-order here. You can catch the band all summer on the Vans Warped Tour.
